Developing the Soul Pt 2: Why Your Spirit Cannot Work Without a Developed Soul

Developing the Soul Pt 2: Why Your Spirit Cannot Work Without a Developed Soul

Developing The Soul · Part 2 of 3

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 31 December 2019

The spirit of man cannot express itself in the natural world without a developed soul — and an undeveloped soul limits everything God wants to do through you.

The soul is not a passive spiritual component — it is the essential bridge between the spirit of man and the physical world. Without its development, the Holy Spirit cannot fill what has not surrendered, the mind of God cannot be accessed, and destiny remains out of reach. Developing the soul through God's Word is not optional for the believer — it is the very condition for spiritual effectiveness.

Teaching Overview

  1. The spirit of man cannot operate independently of the soul — without a developed soul, both the human spirit and the Spirit of God are limited in their expression through a believer.
  2. There is a critical distinction between the baptism of the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Holy Spirit — the latter requires the soul to surrender control through development.
  3. The tree of knowledge of good and evil was not inherently evil — Adam and Eve's error was taking it prematurely, before their souls were ready to handle that level of knowledge.
  4. What makes a believer truly spiritual is the information they carry, not prayer alone — prayer positions you spiritually, but the Word of God develops and purifies the soul.
  5. Soul purification comes through the Spirit and the Word of God, not through the blood of Jesus — the blood blots out sin, but only the Spirit purifies.

Key Distinctions

Baptism of the Holy SpiritBeing Filled with the Holy Spirit
What it isThe Spirit of God operating from the outside, with external manifestationThe Spirit of God who already dwells within being given control of the interior life
How it manifestsExternal — touching people who are healed, prophesying over othersInternal surrender — yielding control of the soul to the indwelling Spirit
What it requiresThe Spirit's external power operating through a believerThe soul being developed enough to willingly surrender control
Risk if incompleteA person can have external gifts but no character, and still end up lostWithout internal surrender, the Spirit inside cannot lead or guide effectively
Biblical parallel"All within me bless His holy name" (external, immersive anointing)"Bless the Lord, O my soul" (internal, soul-level communion)
SpiritSoul
What it isThe innermost part of man, where the Holy Spirit dwellsThe intermediary between the spirit and the body
VisibilityInvisible and cannot be seen in the naturalThe mechanism through which the spirit expresses itself in the natural world
Role in spiritual operationCarries divine capacity and God's revelationMust be developed to translate and manifest what the spirit contains
What limits itNothing inherently — but it cannot bypass an undeveloped soulAn undeveloped soul blocks the spirit from operating effectively
Blood of JesusThe Spirit
Primary functionBlots out sin — removes the record and history of sin as if it never existedPurifies the soul — changes the soul's nature, pattern, and orientation
What it addressesGod's wrath and judgment against mankind who broke covenantThe ongoing condition of the soul that still carries wrong information
Frequency of applicationApplied once — like the blood on the doorposts of IsraelOngoing — purification is a continuous process through the Word
What it cannot doPurify the soul or replace wrong information with God's thoughtsRemove the legal penalty of sin — that was accomplished at the Cross
PrayerThe Word of God / Information
What it doesPositions you in a spiritual placeActually develops and purifies the soul
What it producesSpiritual atmosphere and connectionSpiritual maturity, God's thought patterns, and a shared language with God
LimitationPrayer alone does not make you spiritualWithout it, God cannot speak to you in new ways or advance you into a new season
Required forAccessing God's presenceKnowing God's mind, fulfilling destiny, and seeing new seasons
Timing (God's appointed moment)Disobedience (taking prematurely)
In EdenGod intended to give Adam and Eve knowledge from the tree at the right timeAdam and Eve took the fruit before God gave it — that was the sin
What God said"On the day you eat of it" — referring to self-initiated taking, not God's givingGod did not say they could never eat it — He said they could not take it themselves
The resultEnlightenment and destiny fulfilled through readinessPremature knowledge destroyed their capacity to fulfill purpose
PrincipleGod plants things He intends to give — in His timeBypassing God's timing corrupts the very gift He planned to release

The Spirit Cannot Operate Without the Soul

  • The spirit of God and the spirit of man cannot express themselves in the natural world without the aid of the soul.
  • Demons do not possess dead bodies — even demonic spirits require a soul to manipulate a human being, because the soul is the mechanism of expression in the physical world.
  • Angels will never preach the gospel independently because they do not possess a soul, making them unable to fully express themselves in the physical realm.

"The spirit of men does not operate independent of the soul."

The Battle Is for the Soul

  • Satan requires a soul to dominate — without souls to torment, he ceases to function as the adversary.
  • God does not need a soul to be God, but He is saving souls because He created them and does not want to see them lost.
  • If a believer does not develop their soul, they limit the ability of both their own spirit and the Spirit of God to work through them.

"The battle is for the soul. So if you don't develop your soul, if you don't develop your soul, you limit the ability of the spirit in you and the spirit of God to work through you."

Baptism of the Holy Spirit vs. Being Filled With the Spirit

  • Every truly born-again believer already has the Holy Spirit — but being filled with the Spirit is an entirely separate experience that requires the soul to surrender control.
  • God is not a demon — He will not take control by force; the soul must willingly give up control, and that surrender is only possible through development.
  • A person can carry external gifts and speak in tongues yet remain spiritually empty on the inside, because external manifestation does not guarantee internal surrender.

"Somebody can have an external baptism but they have not given control inside — they will end up in hell because their character won't be intact. Because it takes your character to be right for God to maintain you and for you to keep your position in the spirit. The devil lost his place because he had no character."

1 Corinthians 2: The Developed Spirit Searches God's Mind

  • The things God has prepared for those who love Him are not found in the heart of natural man — they are revealed by the Spirit to the regenerated spirit of man.
  • The Spirit that "searches all things, even the deep things of God" in 1 Corinthians 2 refers to the regenerated spirit of man — developed to the point where it can pull from the mind of God.
  • A believer who is born again but whose soul has not been developed cannot understand the thoughts of God — and will be destroyed by what they cannot process.

"But if you can pull from the mind of God because you are born again you are regenerated. But your soul has not been developed to understand the thoughts of God and the things of God. What happens is you are destroyed."

The Tree of Knowledge Was Not the Problem — Timing Was

  • The tree of knowledge of good and evil was not inherently evil — God planted it intending to give its fruit to Adam and Eve at the appointed time.
  • God's command — "on the day you eat of it" — referred specifically to self-initiated taking, not to the moment God Himself would give it to them.
  • Adam and Eve received knowledge of good and evil before they had fulfilled their original purpose or developed the soul capacity to carry it — and premature knowledge destroyed them.

"If you go after this tree by yourself, it will kill you. But if I give you the fruit you will not die, because I know what part to give you at what time."

What Makes You Spiritual Is Information, Not Prayer Alone

  • Prayer positions a believer in a spiritual place, but prayer alone does not produce spiritual maturity.
  • The more a believer learns, the more they build a language that they and God share — so that when God speaks, they know exactly what He is saying.
  • God cannot speak to a believer in a new way if they have not acquired new knowledge — without new information, there is no new season.

"What makes you spiritual is the information you have, not prayer. Prayer positioned you to be in a spiritual place. But prayer itself does not make you spiritual."

"You can only go and see your new season if and only you possess new information."

The Blood of Jesus and the Spirit: Two Distinct Works

  • The blood of Jesus was not directed against the devil — it was directed at God's own wrath and perfect judgment against mankind who broke covenant with Him.
  • The blood of Jesus blots out sin, removing its record as if it never existed — but the blood does not purify the soul.
  • Only the Spirit purifies — a believer who has no ongoing contact with the Spirit has no access to purification, no matter how often they invoke the blood.

"The blood of Jesus had nothing to do with the devil. It had everything to do with God's wrath and God's perfect love and judgment against mankind who broke His love."

"What purifies you? It is the spirit that purifies you. The blood of Jesus removed our sin, blotted our sin, but the only thing that purifies us is the spirit."

The Word of God Is the Instrument of Soul Purification

  • Wrong information cannot be removed from the soul unless it is replaced with correct information — the Word of God is the only source of God's thought patterns sufficient to accomplish this replacement.
  • A believer who does not read the Word of God is not purifying their soul — it will remain covered with wrong information that continues to operate regardless of other spiritual practices.
  • Reading the Word is not academic study — it is sitting at the feet of Jesus, building intimacy with God through knowing how He speaks and thinks.

"If you don't read the word of God, you are not purifying your soul. Your soul will still be covered with the wrong information, because you cannot take out information unless you replace information."

"Make it a lifestyle to digest the word of God. How will you see visions if you've never read visions? You cannot enter into a new place without having that information."

Key Definitions

Soul — The intermediary part of man that exists between the spirit and the body; the mechanism through which the spirit expresses itself in the natural world, and the seat of information, character, and will that must be developed for God to operate through a believer.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit — The Holy Spirit operating from the outside, producing external manifestations such as healing through touch and prophetic sight — the attributes of God hidden inside a believer now expressed outwardly.

Being Filled with the Holy Spirit — The interior surrender of the soul's control to the indwelling Spirit; a distinct experience from the baptism, requiring the soul to be developed enough to willingly yield dominion over itself.

Revelation — Not God telling something new from the outside, but the uncovering of what was always already there internally; what was present but unseen is now made visible to the developed spirit.

Purification — The ongoing cleansing of the soul accomplished by the Spirit and the Word of God, distinct from the blotting out of sin accomplished by the blood of Jesus; purification changes the soul's thought patterns into God's patterns.

Obedience — To listen with intent; the practical expression of abiding in God's Word, through which the soul is developed and aligned with God's will rather than operating from wrong information.

Key Takeaways

  • The spirit cannot bypass the soul — Every believer must develop their soul because neither the human spirit nor the Spirit of God can fully express themselves in the natural world through an undeveloped soul.
  • Being born again and being filled with the Spirit are two different realities — Salvation places the Holy Spirit within you, but filling requires the soul to surrender control — and that surrender demands development.
  • Information, not prayer alone, determines spiritual maturity — Prayer creates the atmosphere for spiritual encounter, but the Word of God is what actually develops the soul, renews the mind, and builds the shared language between a believer and God.
  • The blood of Jesus blots out sin; only the Spirit purifies — Confusing these two distinct works leaves believers applying the blood for a purpose it was not designed to serve, while neglecting the Spirit's purifying work through the Word.
  • A new season requires new information — God cannot speak to a believer in a way that goes beyond what they know; without new knowledge, there is no capacity to enter what God has prepared.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what areas of your life is your soul still operating on wrong or incomplete information — and what specific truth from God's Word do you need to replace it with?
  2. Have you been relying on prayer as a substitute for the Word of God? How would your spiritual life change if you pursued the Word with the same consistency and urgency as prayer?
  3. When you examine the condition of your soul honestly — is the Holy Spirit filling you, or are you still in control? What would it actually look like for you to surrender that control?
  4. What new information have you received in this season — and if you cannot name any, what does that reveal about your readiness for the new things God is doing?
  5. Do you love God Himself, or do you love what He does for you? How does your engagement with His Word — or lack of it — answer that question honestly?
