Dimensions of Strength: How God Empowers the Spirit, Soul, and Body
Your spirit is the conduit through which God's power flows — and mastering it determines everything.
God ministers strength to different parts of a person's being depending on the situation. Because man is spirit, soul, and body, the power of God is not one-dimensional — it is distributed according to what is needed and what has been cultivated. Believers who do not understand how to engage their spirit cannot effectively receive from God, overcome the enemy, or operate in the fullness of what He has freely provided.
Teaching Overview
- Number one, the expression of God's power.
- Number two. The spirit gives you an advantage in the realm of divine revelation.
- The power of your spirit gives you insight into God's mind.
Key Distinctions
| Spirit | Soul | Body | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | The innermost part of man; the organ through which God's power and gifts operate | The mind, will, and emotions; the seat of thought and decision | The physical form; the outer man subject to natural laws |
| Where God's gifts manifest | All spiritual gifts and divine power flow from the spirit | The soul experiences God's strengthening in times of emotional and psychological pressure | Physical strength may be supernaturally empowered but is not the primary channel of spiritual gifts |
| What it controls | Dominion, divine revelation, discernment, and reception of God's free gifts | Determines endurance — the mind quits before the body does | Executes what the soul and spirit direct, but cannot sustain itself spiritually |
| What happens when it is unengaged | No discernment, no spiritual gifts, no reception of divine things | The believer becomes soul-led, driven by feelings and preference rather than God | Outward religious activity without spiritual power |
| How it relates to worship | True worship is performed with the spirit, directed toward who God is | Soul-led worship seeks emotional satisfaction; it becomes self-directed | Physical expression (vocal performance, instrumentation) without spirit engagement is not worship |
| How it relates to spiritual warfare | Spiritual battles are fought spirit-to-spirit; an unengaged spirit loses by default | Fighting the enemy with the mind alone guarantees defeat | The body has no capacity to engage principalities and powers |
| Prayer | Spiritual Gifts | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Standing in the gap for another; calling on God to intervene directly | A divine empowerment given to an individual to be a conduit of God's action |
| Who acts | God Himself intervenes — He may send an angel or the Holy Spirit descends | The gifted individual acts as the direct channel of God's power |
| Speed | God responds according to His sovereign timing and mercy | A gift can minister what is needed in seconds |
| Availability | Available to every believer | Distributed by God; must be cultivated and desired |
| Limitation | Divine intervention cannot be controlled or guaranteed in method | Without the gift, that particular expression of power is not available through that person |
| Worship | Praise | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Adoration directed at who God is | Thanksgiving and celebration directed at what God has done |
| Focus | God's nature, character, and being | God's deeds and acts on behalf of His people |
| Direction | Unto God — it moves Him | Encourages the believer; it is not primarily what moves God |
| Content determines it | A song is worship when it addresses who He is | A song is praise when it focuses on His works |
| Example | Adoring God for His majesty and holiness | "He has done great things" — focusing on His deeds |
| Worship | Performance | |
|---|---|---|
| What God seeks | Those who worship in spirit | Vocal ability, musicianship, or emotional atmosphere |
| Engagement required | Spirit must be engaged | Can be done entirely through soul and body |
| Who benefits | God is the audience | The performer and congregation feel satisfied |
| Praise | Encouragement | |
|---|---|---|
| Direction | Directed toward God for what He has done | Directed toward the believer to remind them of what God has provided |
| Example | Blessing the Lord's holy name | Songs about the blood of Jesus strengthening the believer — reminding self of what has been provided |
| Effect on God | Honors Him | Does not move Him — He already knows what His blood accomplished |
| Spirit-Led | Soul-Led | |
|---|---|---|
| Driven by | The activated, discerning spirit | Feelings, preferences, and emotional responses |
| In worship | Seeks God's favorite song — what moves Him | Seeks one's own favorite song — what makes the worshiper feel good |
| In spiritual warfare | Engages the enemy on the correct spiritual level | Fights a spiritual enemy with the mind — and loses |
| Produces | Consistent fruit, discernment, divine direction | Inconsistency, spiritual weariness, and a sense that nothing is working |
| Spirit-Searching | Soul-Searching | |
|---|---|---|
| What it finds | Who you are in Christ; the mind and will of God | What the soul perceives of itself — incomplete without the spirit |
| Limitation | Requires an engaged, cultivated spirit | The soul does not know itself without the spirit |
| Biblical basis | The spirit of man searches the deep things; the Spirit of God reveals God's thoughts | Soul-searching is a human practice that cannot access divine self-knowledge |
| Intercession | Other Spiritual Gifts | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A decision — standing in the gap and calling on God to intervene | A divine empowerment distributed by God for specific functions |
| Source | A choice any believer can make | Sovereignly given and must be desired and cultivated |
| Effect | God Himself intervenes on behalf of the one being prayed for | The gifted individual becomes the direct channel of God's action |
| Can be prayed for | No — there is no gift of intercession; intercession is a decision | Yes — believers are instructed to desire spiritual gifts |
The Spirit Is the Primary Channel of God's Power
- Man is spirit, soul, and body — and God ministers strength to a different part of the being depending on what the situation requires.
- The gift of healing does not reside in the physical body or the soul — it is the function of the spirit, because it is the spirit that quickens.
- When believers pray without a corresponding gift, they are calling on God for divine intervention — not channeling His power directly through themselves.
"There are people who they are anointed without any gift, but their strength is that when they call on God, God hears them. So they can't come and say, be healed. But if they pray and say, Father, heal this woman, heal this person, heal this individual, God will answer their prayer immediately."
Spiritual Gifts Must Be Actively Desired
- The Body of Christ spends more time praying for things that require a gift than cultivating the gifts themselves, which delays what God intends to supply quickly.
- Paul's instruction is deliberate: follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts — desire is the initiating condition.
- Gifts operate from the spirit — the manifestation of the Holy Spirit is never in the soul or the body.
"If you are around sick people, don't pray for the gift of intercessory because there's no gift of intercession. Intercession is a decision. Pray that God will anoint you and gift you to be a conduit of healing among people around you."
The Soul Is the Seat of Endurance — and the First to Quit
- Jesus in Gethsemane was not weakened physically — the angels who came to strengthen Him strengthened His soul, so He could endure what lay ahead.
- In any physically demanding situation, the mind quits before the body; the soul is always the first point of collapse.
- The greatest battles a believer faces are not physical — they are battles of the mind.
"The devil is extremely powerful to those who see him through the lens of weakness but those who see the devil through the eyes of the spirit they know he's under our word."
Ruling the Spirit Is the Foundation of All Spiritual Power
- Scripture states that he who rules his spirit is more powerful than a man who can take a whole city — spirit control is the precondition for God's power moving through a person.
- Jesus demonstrated complete mastery of His spirit — He could not die until He chose to give His spirit to the Father.
- Moses, though physically strong in old age, was instructed by God to surrender his spirit — at that level of spirit control, death is transition, not defeat.
"If you control your spirit, you are more powerful than a person who can take over a city."
The Three Dimensions of the Spirit's Advantage
- The first advantage of an engaged spirit is the expression of divine power — the spirit operates beyond the laws of nature and is the conduit of God's power into the world.
- The second advantage is divine revelation — an activated spirit begins to understand the systems that govern the spiritual realm and how to make prayer avail much in God's presence.
- The third advantage is insight into God's mind — God does not act without letting the spiritually attuned believer know, and this knowledge transforms suffering into purposeful endurance.
"When everybody is panicking in the midst of a storm, you'll be smiling because you know the outcome. When things are going a different way in you, you know that all things work for my good. Because you know God's mind, you're not sitting there and saying, I just trust you. Yes, you trust God, but you also are in on what is happening."
The Spirit Is the Organ of Discernment and Reception
- Spiritual things cannot be received by the carnal mind — they can only be received by those who are born of the Spirit and have become spiritual.
- The spirit reveals what God has freely given — without this revelation, believers fight and fast for things that cost nothing, while remaining unaware of what is already theirs.
- The spirit is the organ of discernment — without an engaged spirit, a believer has no discernment at all.
"You will be spirit searching not soul searching because the soul does not know itself without the Spirit."
True Worship Requires an Engaged Spirit
- God is not seeking vocal performance or musical ability — He is seeking those who will worship Him in spirit.
- The content of a song — not its tempo or atmosphere — determines whether it is worship, praise, or encouragement.
- A song directed at what God has done is praise; a song reminding the believer of what God has provided is encouragement — neither is worship in the strict sense.
"Worship is about God, it's not about us."
"He has done, meaning you're looking at his deeds, you're not looking at him. Two separate things."
Key Definitions
Spirit — The innermost part of man; the conduit of God's power into the world, the organ of discernment, and the dimension through which all spiritual gifts and divine revelation operate.
Soul — The mind, will, and emotions; the seat of endurance and psychological strength — the part of man that is strengthened to endure pressure, and the first part to quit under strain.
Intercession — Not a spiritual gift but a decision; the act of standing in the gap for another person and calling on God to intervene directly on their behalf.
Divine Intervention — God Himself acting in response to prayer — not through a gifted individual but by His own sovereign initiative, sending an angel or the Holy Spirit directly to a situation.
Worship — The spirit's adoration of who God is, not a response to what He has done; true worship is determined by its content and its direction — toward God's person, not toward the worshiper's feelings.
Praise — The act of honoring God for His deeds and works; distinct from worship in that its focus is what God has done rather than who He is.
Ruling the Spirit — The capacity to govern, manage, and direct one's own spirit; Scripture identifies this as greater than the military power to conquer a city, and the precondition for the full expression of God's power through a believer.
Key Takeaways
- God ministers strength to the part of your being that matches the demand of your situation — understanding this prevents believers from applying the wrong spiritual response to the wrong problem.
- Spiritual gifts must be actively desired, not passively hoped for — gifts are the means by which God supplies His people quickly, and neglecting to desire them forces the church into prolonged prayer for things that could be resolved in moments.
- Ruling your spirit is the greatest form of human power available to a believer — until a believer governs their spirit, the full expression of God's strength through them remains locked.
- Insight into God's mind transforms suffering into purposeful endurance — when a believer knows the outcome, they can embrace the process without wavering.
- Worship, praise, and encouragement are not interchangeable — confusing them means God is not receiving what He is seeking, and the believer is directing spiritual energy toward themselves rather than toward Him.
Reflection Questions
- In the spiritual challenges you are currently facing, are you engaging your spirit — or are you relying on your mind, emotions, or physical effort to produce spiritual results?
- What spiritual gifts have you been passively hoping for rather than actively desiring and pursuing? What would it look like to deliberately ask God to make you a conduit of that gift among the people around you?
- When you worship, are you seeking songs that move you — or seeking what moves God? How would your approach to worship change if you treated God, not yourself, as the audience?
- Is there an area of your life where you have been "soul-searching" for identity, direction, or answers — that would be resolved by engaging your spirit instead? What would spirit-searching look like practically for you?
- If you knew with certainty what God was preparing you for through your current season of difficulty, would you endure it differently? What does your response to that question reveal about how much insight into God's mind you are currently walking in?
