Excelling in Your Calling: Dedication, Focus, and the Urgency of Purpose

Excelling in Your Calling: Dedication, Focus, and the Urgency of Purpose

Excelling in Your Calling · Part 1 of 2

Part 2
Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 29 January 2020

Excellence is not optional for the believer — God is infinite, and He expects every person He created to grow, excel, and finish what He assigned them.

Every Christian has a calling, and God expects that calling to be pursued with singular focus, iron discipline, and complete authenticity. Stagnation is not neutral — it is a form of spiritual failure. The servant who buried his talent did not steal it or destroy it; he simply did nothing with it, and the Master cast him out. God loves productivity, God loves excelling, and finishing your calling before you go home is the highest achievement of a human life.

What it isA mediator between the invisible and visible world — a mouthpiece who speaks on behalf of GodA shepherd who leads, teaches, and tends a congregationMinistry, preaching, intercession, spiritual serviceEmployment, vocation, professional contributionKnowing your assignment and working consistently toward itExisting without mission or defined spiritual assignmentThe internal virtues that reflect God — discipline, dependability, responsibilityThe supernatural ability and anointing of God operating through a person
How it is definedBy the office — prophets see according to the lens of their callingBy the office — pastors teach and care according to their callingMeasured by God as unto the LordMeasured by God as unto the LordDriven by calling and purposeDriven by emotion, circumstance, or survivalFormed through choices, consistency, and obedienceReceived as a gift or anointing from God
Who it servesGod and the people who need to receive what God is sayingGod and the congregation under their careGod directlyGod indirectly — every good and perfect gift comes from aboveThe purpose of God — fulfilling what He designed you forSelf — comfort, immediate needs, or others' opinionsGod — it is the vehicle that carries His Spirit and intentionThe mission of God — but only when character is present to sustain it
What happens without itIf a pastor tries to teach the prophet's calling, he will fail — he has general knowledge but not inside knowledgeA pastor without focus on his specific calling cannot fully serve those entrusted to himPrayer without productivity is a lie — God doesn't value devotion disconnected from fruitfulnessWork without purpose becomes complaint, ingratitude, and dissatisfactionDeath comes prematurely in the spirit — you live for now rather than for eternityYou have nothing to look forward to; you live trying to stay on earth rather than finish and go homeWithout character there is no God — no character, no GodPower without character corrupts the message and the messenger
Can it be transferredNo — a pastor cannot teach what a prophet's calling is like from the insideNo — each office carries a unique lens and messageYes — the principle of doing everything as unto the Lord applies to all believersYes — the same dedication principle applies in every workplaceYes — every human being is called; the purpose mindset can be cultivatedYes — purposeless living is a condition that can be reversed through revelation and commitmentYes — character is built through discipline, and anyone can pursue itPartially — anointing is given by God, but character must be developed to carry it

What Excellence Means

  • Excelling in your calling means doing the best you can do in that field — surpassing anyone who was ever called to do that one thing.
  • To excel is to surpass, to grow, to outgrow yourself, to out-beat yourself, and to keep going higher.
  • God never expects you to stay the same — if you remain the same, you are not serving the purpose, because the purpose is to excel.

"Excelling in anything is doing the best you can do in that field. Doing your best to surpass anybody that was ever called to do that one thing."

Why God Requires Excellence

  • God is infinite, so you will never outdo Him — His expectation that you excel is a desire for you to come higher and know Him more deeply.
  • Excelling gives you a position to know the mind of God, the ways of God, and to understand the God you are working with at the stage you are in.
  • If you remain at the same level when God has moved beyond it, you will mistake the works of others in higher levels for demonic forces, because you are dealing with a God beyond where you are.

"The more you excel, the more you can know Him. Staying where you are, you will never know Him because it takes you to grow certain steps for you to know Him."

The Discipline God Expects

  • God is always watching, angels are always watching, and the great cloud of witnesses in heaven is watching — Christians who act as though no one is watching live carelessly and become pretenders.
  • An athlete's mindset — pushing through pain, losing in public, developing discipline whether anyone is watching or not — makes them more prone to learn spiritual principles than many regular believers.
  • The brain is not designed for multitasking — giving your full attention to something produces the best results, and this is why singular focus is essential for hearing God.

"Christians, God is always watching, they act like God is not watching. Angels are always watching, you're acting like nobody is watching. Even the saints in heaven, the Bible says, for we have a great cloud of witnesses, watching us."

The Internal Obstacles That Destroy Excellence

  • The biggest cause of delays in people's lives is not external — not the devil, not a curse, not an altar raised against them — but internal, rooted in lack of focus, diligence, and dedication.
  • The number one killer of excelling in your calling is being busy looking at other people instead of focusing on what you have been given.
  • You cannot excel in what you do not put your focus in — when your attention is divided, everything under your care suffers because it is not receiving the attention it requires.

"The number one killer of people's calling and excelling in their calling is you're busy looking at other people."

The Consequence of Not Serving Your Purpose

  • When God gives you a calling, receiving Jesus is one thing — but you can lose your soul by not serving your purpose.
  • The servant in the parable of the talents did not abuse or destroy what he was given — he simply did nothing with it — and the Master cast him into outer darkness.
  • God loves productivity; God loves excelling; prayer without productivity is a lie.

"Every branch and any branch that does not produce fruit, He cuts it and throws it into the fire. God loves productivity. God loves excelling. God doesn't like praying without productivity. It's a lie."

Work as an Act of Worship

  • Christian work and secular work are not different — the Bible instructs believers to do everything as unto the Lord because both are measured the same way.
  • Every good and perfect gift comes from above — teachers, counsellors, professionals, and caregivers are all doing the work of God whether they recognise it or not.
  • Every single human being is called — calling does not mean preaching; it means understanding why God positioned you and doing it with the right mindset and heart.

"Do your work, do everything as unto the Lord. Because it is measured the same way. The dedication I put in my work, the dedication I put in doing things should be a reflection of my work with God."

Character as the Vehicle of God's Power

  • The vehicle that drives the heart of God, the power of God, the Spirit of God, and divine intention is character.
  • No character, no God — every truly great man of God is a deeply disciplined person.
  • Joseph never complained — he rose to authority in every circumstance because he performed whatever purpose was given him to the highest level, demonstrating the virtues of dependability, discipline, and responsibility.

"The vehicle that drives the heart of God, the power of God, the spirit of God, there are no intention is character. No character, no God."

The Urgency of Finishing

  • This world is not our home — we are passing through, and there is no time to waste on purposeless living.
  • Tomorrow is not promised; believers must consistently and continually work toward what God has given them to do, living with purpose at all times.
  • When you finish everything you are supposed to do, death is not a tragedy — Stephen, while being killed, saw the Lord rising on His throne to receive him because his purpose was done.

"If you don't know your purpose, you live without a tomorrow because you live for now. You try to stay on earth because you don't know there is something bigger and better."

Your Unique Message and Calling

  • Every servant of God has a message from God — all have the same Scripture, but each sees it according to the lens of their calling, and it is impossible to see outside of your office.
  • The gospel accounts of Luke, Matthew, Mark, and John all describe the same events but from different perspectives shaped by their professions and experiences — Luke's medical background makes his descriptions of disease more detailed than Matthew's.
  • The true purpose of a prophet is not to prophesy — a prophet is a mediator between the invisible and visible world, a mouthpiece who speaks on behalf of God.

"Every servant of God has a message from God. We all have the same manuscript which is the living word. But we are all going to see it according to the glasses or the lens of our calling."

Authenticity and Singular Focus

  • A true man or woman of God is always influenced by the Spirit within them, not by external trends or what others are doing — whoever is influenced by what is outside of them is not fit for the service of God because they are corrupting the message.
  • Everything in your life must revolve around the work of God — anything that interrupts the work of God must be removed.
  • Different callings produce different messages, and apparent disagreement between ministers does not mean one is wrong — they are serving the same Lord but called to different things.

"A true man or woman of God is always influenced by the spirit that is in them. Not what is outside of them. Any word with influence by what is outside of them is not fit for the service of God, because you are corrupting the message of God."

Key Definitions

Excellence — Doing the best you can do in your field; surpassing anyone who was ever called to do that one thing, outgrowing yourself, and continually going higher.

Calling — The purpose for which God positioned every human being on earth; it does not mean preaching, but includes every good and perfect gift God has given to benefit others.

Character — The internal virtues — discipline, dependability, responsibility — that form the vehicle through which God's power, Spirit, and divine intention are expressed; without it, no divine work can be sustained.

Prophet — A mediator between the invisible and visible world; a mouthpiece who speaks on behalf of God, relaying to people what is on the other side.

Purpose — The specific assignment God designed for a person before their time on earth; something that must be fulfilled before departure, failing which — even as a believer — a soul is in danger.

Stagnation — The condition of remaining at the same spiritual level through lack of diligence, focus, and dedication; the root cause of most delays people mistakenly attribute to external spiritual attack.

Key Takeaways

  • Excellence is mandatory, not optional — God is infinite and expects every person He created to grow, because staying the same means failing the purpose He gave you.
  • The greatest obstacle to excelling is internal — Lack of focus, comparing yourself to others, and divided attention destroy more callings than any external spiritual attack.
  • Character is the foundation, not the supplement — Without the virtues of discipline, dependability, and responsibility, God's power has no vehicle to operate through in your life.
  • Every human being has a calling — Calling is not limited to ministry; every God-given gift used to benefit others is part of His work and will be measured accordingly.
  • Finishing your purpose before you leave is the goal — The believer's ambition is not longevity on earth but to complete what God assigned, go home, and hear "well done."

Reflection Questions

  1. In what area of your calling have you been stagnant — and have you been blaming external forces for delays that may actually be rooted in lack of focus or discipline?
  2. Are you currently comparing yourself to other people's ministries, gifts, or platforms? What specific thing in your own calling has suffered because your attention has been divided?
  3. Does the dedication you bring to your daily work — your job, your craft, your responsibilities — reflect the same seriousness you bring to your relationship with God? If not, what needs to change?
  4. If you are honest about your current character — your discipline, dependability, and consistency when no one is watching — is that character a vehicle God can trust with greater power and promotion?
  5. If you were to leave this earth today, would you be able to say you finished what God gave you to do? What would have to change in your daily priorities for that answer to become yes?

Scripture References

  • John 15:1–6
  • Hebrews 12:1 — "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us." (KJV)
  • James 1:17 — "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." (KJV)
