Is Cursing Witchcraft: Understanding Spiritual Authority and Divine Judgment

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 6 October 2022

God-appointed leaders possess genuine spiritual authority to bless and curse according to Kingdom law, distinct from witchcraft's manipulative spells.

The power to curse is not demonic manipulation—it is the legitimate authority God places in those He has appointed as leaders and men of God. A curse operates according to divine law: it cannot land without cause, it must be backed by God's justice, and it flows from a position of genuine spiritual authority. Witchcraft, by contrast, uses spells to circumvent God's law through deception and force. Understanding this distinction is critical for believers who must recognize true spiritual authority, submit to God's established order, and examine whether they themselves have offended God and invited His judgment through disobedience.

Teaching Overview

  1. A curse without cause cannot land—it requires God's approval and a legitimate foundation in disobedience or breach of covenant.
  2. God endows appointed leaders with the authority to bless and curse as an extension of His own judgment, not as a separate demonic power.
  3. Witchcraft operates through spells designed to manipulate and bypass God's law, whereas divine curses execute God's established consequences for sin.
  4. Believers must examine their own obedience to God and reconcile broken relationships, because unresolved wrongs create spiritual vulnerabilities that invite judgment.
  5. Experience and spiritual maturity are required to exercise spiritual authority correctly; knowledge without wisdom produces error and harm.
  6. The church must restore respect for God-appointed leaders and cease public criticism that undermines the authority God has placed in His servants.

The Authority to Bless and Curse

  • A man who has no ability to curse cannot bless—the power to bless and the power to curse are inseparable expressions of the same spiritual authority.
  • When God genuinely anoints somebody and gives them a certain position in His kingdom, that person operates with authority that God Himself backs; their words carry the weight of divine law.
  • The appointment of authority is God's decision, not man's; those appointed need not receive a fresh word from God each time they speak a blessing or curse—their position itself carries the authority.

"If God has genuinely anointed somebody and given somebody a certain position in him, that person has the ability to bless somebody, meaning that God doesn't have to speak to them to bless. Whoever they will bless, God has to back up their words and bless. And also whoever they will curse, God will also curse them."

Curses Require a Cause—The Law of Proverbs 26:2

  • A curse without cause cannot stand; this is not demonic law but God's established principle written in Scripture.
  • If a curse lands on someone, it is evidence that disobedience or breach of covenant exists—the person has opened a door through their own actions.
  • A witch cannot curse you; a witch can only place a spell on you, but a curse requires God's backing, which flows from legitimate divine judgment.

"The Bible is saying this: a curse without a cause cannot stand. Meaning somebody cannot just randomly curse you. If a witch curses you and it comes to pass, you offended God. Because a curse without a cause cannot stand."

Spells vs. Curses: The Distinction

  • Spells are witchcraft—designed to violate God's law, find a back door to manipulation, or force an outcome through occult means.
  • A curse is the repercussion of disobedience to God; it executes divine judgment when someone breaks covenant or violates God's established order.
  • God is the only one who can curse, because curses are rooted in His authority and His law; witches and wizards can cast spells, but they cannot curse.

"A spell is not a curse. A curse is repercussions of a form of disobedience to God. Whenever you offend God, God deals with you with a curse. God is the only one that can curse. A witch cannot curse you."

God's Established Laws of Judgment

  • God established through Moses a law of jealousy: if a spouse is unfaithful, the priest releases a curse written on paper, dissolved in water, and administered as a test.
  • The outcome is certain: if the accused person is innocent, nothing happens; if guilty, their body becomes sick and their stomach swells—the curse lands because cause exists.
  • These are not examples of demonic power but of God's judicial system, written in Scripture, administered through appointed vessels.

"If a woman or a man cheats on his spouse, they will go to the priest and the priest will release a curse. And that curse will be written on a paper. That paper will be put in water. And the woman or the man will be given to drink it."

Respect for God's Appointed Positions

  • Believers do not choose who God appoints; God elects His own servants and the church must honor the positions God has established.
  • Ananias and Sapphira died because they mocked Peter and the authority God had placed in him; their deaths were not demonic but the execution of God's judgment through an appointed vessel.
  • When someone criticizes or undermines an appointed leader publicly, they are mocking the position God Himself has established, inviting the same judgment.

"If God has trusted somebody to anoint them with a certain position, he knows why he is doing it. You did not choose God to elect them. God did that on his own. If you don't understand the position that God has placed people, you will find yourself in a lot of trouble for no reason."

The Problem of Experience Without Wisdom

  • Knowledge alone is not enough; wisdom is the application of knowledge through experience, and God teaches through experience so that believers understand the why behind the law.
  • Someone who casts out a demon is not spiritually mature—it only proves they are a believer; casting out demons is a basic gift, not a mark of spiritual authority or understanding.
  • Many young people in the faith speak with zeal but without experience, creating error and harm; they should not be given platforms to teach or critique those with genuine spiritual maturity.

"The spirit of God upon you now, the anointing upon you now, is not new. It has been with you from the day you gave your life to Jesus. But the more you have matured your realizing man, I used to be religious, I used to do this God never left you by, because God understands your growth in the experience of working with him is what also enhances your work with him."

Unresolved Wrongs Create Spiritual Vulnerability

  • A curse or witchcraft attack finds entry through disobedience, broken relationships, or wrongs that have not been made right.
  • When someone wrongs another person and does not reconcile, the offended person can cry out to God, and God will hear that cry and close doors for the offender.
  • Fasting, prayer, and religious works cannot undo judgment caused by unresolved wrongs; reconciliation and restitution must come first.

"Your doors are closed because of that woman. It's your fault. 10 years because it has been 10 years now. Something 10 years ago. This woman is complaining, cried before God. Cried before God. Cried before God."

Breaking Curses Through Reconciliation and Restitution

  • It is not enough to declare a curse broken in Jesus' name if the underlying wrong has not been addressed; reconciliation and restitution must precede the declaration.
  • The example of Hannah shows that God's judgment is just: she was denied children not by demonic means but because her husband favored her over his other wives, creating injustice.
  • When the offender makes restitution and gives back to God what they have received unjustly, then God removes the curse and opens doors.

"Today it is not, oh I break it in the name of Jesus. We can't break what Jesus has done. We need to go before God and say, Lord, I will find this person and I will make peace with them. Whatever I can send them. I'm going to make peace."

Generational Curses and Ancestral Covenants

  • Curses can be passed down through generations when ancestors entered into ungodly covenants—worship of idols, serving fetish priests, or making promises to demonic forces.
  • The conditions of ancestral covenants bind descendants: if the covenant requires service to a spirit, and descendants do not serve, then the spirit will attack them and their children.
  • Breaking a generational curse requires identification of the ancestral breach, repentance, and a declaration of disconnection from that covenant in Jesus' name.

"Once the children are born, they will have to serve this spirit. If they don't serve this spirit, them and their children's children will suffer."

The Role of True Prophets vs. False Prophets

  • A true prophet speaks what God has shown Him and is willing to deliver hard truth, even when it will be criticized and misunderstood.
  • False prophets lack the maturity to speak unpopular truth; they seek approval and avoid confrontation; they operate from incomplete knowledge and gimmicks rather than genuine revelation.
  • Just because someone calls themselves a prophet or claims to cast out demons does not make them spiritually mature or trustworthy; this requires experience, tested character, and proven fruit.

"One thing that breaks my heart is a lot of people. The Lord Jesus. I don't want to be called prophet. Let me just be Brother Lovi. Said no, because if you do that, you will rob them of what I have given them. You see there's not just because somebody calls themselves prophet, it doesn't mean he's a prophet."

God's Ways Are Not Our Ways

  • Human reasoning about what is right often contradicts God's moral law; what seems beneficial to mankind may be offensive to God.
  • The church has lost understanding of this truth and now judges spiritual leaders by human standards rather than by God's established order.
  • Young believers with zeal but without understanding now critique and undermine true leaders, not realizing they are serving Satan's agenda through their criticism.

"God being Spirit, it means that His customs and His ways are not like ours. The Bible says this, there is a way that seemeth right to men. There is a way that seemeth right to men. It means that what human beings may see to be right to God, it may be wrong."

The Danger of Public Criticism and Undermining Authority

  • Christians who publicly criticize and expose leaders without going through proper channels (elders, private correction) are serving Satan's kingdom, not God's.
  • The loss of respect for God's appointed leaders in the church has opened the door to demonic activity and error.
  • Those who critique are often not even planted in church themselves; they are people who have rejected God's order and take pleasure in tearing down those who serve.

"It is a shame that Christians want to build themselves of other people. The Bible says it like this, if you think your brother or your sister has done wrong, take some elders and go and correct them. None of them do that. They want to expose you because they think they are doing God as service."

Knowledge Without Experience Is Insufficient

  • Teaching from theory without personal experience creates error; a person can possess knowledge but lack the practical wisdom that comes from walking through difficulty and learning God's ways.
  • God gives wisdom through experience, not knowledge first; believers must go through their own trials so they understand the why behind God's law.
  • Those who teach without experience will have deficiencies in their practical ministry and will harm those who listen to them.

"When you're teaching from theory, it is a mumbo jumbo, it's you think you have never done it. So you don't know. If you have no experience, you don't know."

Prophetic Revelation Reveals Hidden Wrongs So Healing Can Come

  • God uses prophetic revelation to expose generational curses, unresolved sins, demonic assignments, and hidden wrongs so that people can be healed and freed.
  • The purpose of revealing these hidden things is not condemnation but deliverance—once the root is identified, repentance and reconciliation can follow, and the curse can be broken.
  • A true prophet will speak with accuracy and specificity, giving details that only God could know, so the person hearing will believe and be moved to action.

"This is the beautiful thing about the prophetic, the love prophecy. It's God as the ability to show you source of things. So that the one you're speaking to will believe the Lord Jesus."

Demonic Attacks Target the Entire Family Through Spiritual Weaknesses

  • Demonic assignments often target the family unit and move from person to person, attempting to steal life, cut days short, and destroy bloodlines.
  • A family member's unresolved wrong, broken covenant, or disobedience to God creates an open door that allows demonic forces to attack not just that person but the entire household.
  • The prayers and intercession of one believing family member can stand in the gap and prevent the enemy from completing his assignment against the whole family.

"What attacked your daughter was supposed to finish him first? He was the first one that was supposed to be taken. There is all why you survived. It is because of your love for God. God saved them and he's saving her because of you."

The Gospel's Sufficiency in All Things

  • Jesus paid the complete price for healing, deliverance, reconciliation, and salvation; believers do not need to seek solutions through man's efforts or worldly means.
  • The temptation to trust in human experts, healers, or religious leaders instead of Jesus creates entanglement and spiritual confusion.
  • The solution to every problem is found in God through Jesus Christ; repentance, reconciliation, obedience, and faith in His finished work are the pathway to freedom.

"Our solution is not with man. It is with God who is with man."

Key Definitions

Curse — The execution of God's judgment and consequences for disobedience, released through an appointed vessel with divine authority; it cannot land without cause.

Spell — A witchcraft technique designed to manipulate, force an outcome, or bypass God's law through hidden or deceptive means; fundamentally different from a curse.

Witchcraft — The practice of using occult power and spells to circumvent God's authority and manipulate circumstances through demonic means; it cannot affect those who remain obedient to God.

Spiritual Authority — The power that God places in an appointed leader to bless and curse as an extension of God's own judgment; it is not given by the congregation or earned through human qualification but appointed by God alone.

Experience — The practical knowledge gained through walking through difficulty and learning God's ways firsthand; it is the means by which God teaches wisdom and produces maturity in believers.

Generational Curse — A judgment or demonic assignment passed down through family lines as a result of ancestral covenant-breaking, idolatry, or disobedience; it binds descendants until the covenant is broken and repentance occurs.

Key Takeaways

  • A curse without cause cannot stand — The principle of Proverbs 26:2 means that any curse landing on a person is evidence of disobedience or covenant breach; witchcraft cannot overcome God's law.

  • God appoints spiritual authority and it must be honored — The ability to bless and curse flows from a position of authority that God Himself establishes; undermining or criticizing appointed leaders invites the same judgment they execute.

  • Unresolved wrongs open doors to demonic attack — Broken relationships, unforgiven debts, and wrongs not made right create spiritual vulnerability that allows curses and witchcraft to gain entry into a person's or family's life.

  • Reconciliation and restitution break curses, not declarations alone — Spiritual freedom requires making peace with those wronged, sending restitution, and asking forgiveness; fasting and prayer cannot undo judgment caused by ongoing injustice.

  • Experience and maturity produce wisdom; knowledge and zeal without them produce error — Those who teach from theory or young believers with zeal but no experience often undermine true spiritual authority; the church must restore respect for tested, mature leaders.

  • Generational curses are real but breakable through repentance and disconnection — Ancestral covenants with demonic forces bind families, but identifying the covenant, repenting, and declaring disconnection in Jesus' name breaks the curse.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there any broken relationships or past wrongs in your life that you have not reconciled or made restitution for? What is preventing you from seeking peace with that person, and what spiritual doors might you be leaving open by delay?

  2. Whom are you sitting under spiritually—what leader or influence are you following? Does that person demonstrate genuine maturity (tested character and proven fruit), or are they operating from knowledge and zeal without experience?

  3. Have you ever criticized or spread information about a leader or person in authority, and if so, did you first go privately with elders as Scripture commands? What would change if the church truly honored God's appointed positions?

  4. Do you know of any generational pattern in your family (sickness, infertility, financial crisis, relational breakdown, spiritual confusion)? Could it be connected to an ancestral covenant or disobedience that needs to be renounced and broken in Jesus' name?

  5. What is one specific area where you are trusting in man's solution instead of God's? What would it look like to turn completely to Jesus and His finished work in that situation?
