Mimēsis: The Lost Art of Imitating God
True spiritual power comes not from following rules about God, but from imitating the character, mannerisms, and ways of those through whom God has proven Himself.
Knowledge is the foundation of every spiritual advance. The gap between where you are and where God intends you to be is not closed by effort alone — it is closed by understanding the ancient practice of mimēsis: deliberate, observational imitation of those whom God has chosen and appointed.
Teaching Overview
- The central error in Christianity is teaching believers to follow God's rules without teaching them to imitate God's character.
- Spiritual power, grace, and dominion are unlocked through imitation — not through independent prayer formulas or personal interpretations of Scripture.
- Physical models are necessary for emulation because the Holy Spirit leads but cannot be physically imitated.
- Emulation requires singular focus — you cannot become what you are called to be while dividing your formation between multiple environments.
- Unless you can emulate your future, you remain captive to your past.
Key Distinctions
| Following God | Imitating God | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Obeying rules and prohibitions God has set | Taking on God's character, mannerisms, and ways as a child takes on a parent's |
| Focus | Behavior modification | Character transformation |
| Outcome | You do different things but remain yourself | You become someone different |
| How it works | Intellectual compliance with commands | Observational emulation of a chosen model |
| Limitations | Can produce moral effort without spiritual power | Requires access to a physical model through whom God has proven Himself |
| Result when neglected | Spiritual stagnation — many scriptures, spiritually bankrupt | No dominion, no power, no subduing |
| Knowledge | Action/Emulation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Understanding the things of the Spirit | Actively copying the patterns, character, and mannerisms of one whom God answers |
| Role | Opens the door for God to minister | Builds the physical and spiritual capacity to carry grace |
| Limitation | Alone, it cannot elevate | Without knowledge, there is nothing to emulate |
| Biblical anchor | "My people perish for lack of knowledge" | "Be ye therefore followers (imitators) of God, as dear children" |
| Physical Models | The Holy Spirit | |
|---|---|---|
| What they provide | A visible pattern of character, prayer, and lifestyle to emulate | Guidance into truth and what Jesus said |
| What they cannot do | Replace the Holy Spirit's leading | Provide a physical pattern you can observe and copy |
| Biblical example | Moses for Joshua; Elijah for Elisha; Jesus for His disciples | Led disciples into all truth, but Jesus first showed them how to live |
| Why both are needed | You cannot emulate what you cannot see | He leads — but you need someone to watch |
| Individual Mentors | Multiple Mentors | |
|---|---|---|
| What it produces | Deep formation in one grace, one character, one Spirit | Divided focus — knowledge increases but emulation is fractured |
| Biblical pattern | Joshua under Moses; Elisha under Elijah | The sons of the prophets — could not carry what Elijah carried |
| Outcome | Transfer of grace and spiritual capacity | Short-circuiting what God wants to give |
| Practical test | You begin to produce results consistent with your model | You know much but produce little |
| Your Past | Your Future | |
|---|---|---|
| What keeps you there | Failing to emulate your future — remaining in your own way | Not yet entered — accessed only through deliberate imitation |
| How to escape | Emulate the future God is calling you into | Emulate the character, patterns, and mannerisms of where you are going |
| Biblical example | The disciples fell asleep in Gethsemane — stuck in their old patterns | Over time they began praying at the same hour as Jesus — they entered the future |
| The danger | Things are dying in your life because your emulation also died | Unless you emulate your future, you remain in your past |
The Foundation: Knowledge as the Gateway to Spiritual Growth
- Divine protection, divine acceleration, and everything you desire in God exist within the realm of knowledge.
- The reason Jesus is the Word is that when words come, they bring knowledge — and knowledge is what produces transformation.
- Your ability to comprehend what God is saying is absolutely necessary and paramount in your ability to grow.
"My people perish because of lack of knowledge. Your divine protection is in knowledge. Your divine acceleration is in knowledge. Everything that you desire in God is within the realm of knowledge."
The Central Error in Christianity: Following Without Imitating
- Christianity has taught believers what not to do, but has failed to teach them to become — to imitate God as a child imitates a parent.
- The goal of God is not behavioral compliance; it is character transformation through imitation.
- A child raised in a house reflects who they were allowed to imitate — and the same principle governs spiritual formation.
"The biggest error in Christianity is you are taught to follow after God but you're not taught to imitate God. You are trying to do things but you are still you. But the goal of God is for you to imitate Him as a child will imitate the parents."
Discipleship as Mimēsis: Taking On the Master's Character
- To be a disciple is not merely to go where the master goes — it means taking on his character and mannerisms, because spiritual power is attached to character.
- When someone tells you to imitate only what a man of God says about God, they are deceiving you — the mannerisms themselves carry transferable grace.
- The disciples of Jesus asked Him to teach them to pray as the disciples of John prayed — because they understood that the pattern of the master produces the results of the master.
"When somebody tells you, imitate only what they say about God they are deceiving you. It's a lie. There are mannerisms that the Lord Jesus had, that you see the apostles also adapting over time."
The Name of Jesus: Authority Requires Imitation
- "In the name of Jesus" literally means in the character and the manner in which Jesus would do it — invoking His character, not merely His title.
- Many believers invoke the character of Jesus in prayer but not in living — which is why the invocation carries no effect.
- The sons of Sceva used Jesus' name without His life, and the demon replied, "Jesus I know, Paul I know, but you I don't know."
"You want the results of Jesus, but you don't want the life of Jesus. You want the results of Paul, but you don't want the life of Paul, it will never work."
Physical Models Are Necessary for Emulation
- You cannot emulate the Holy Spirit — He leads and guides, but He cannot be observed and copied the way a physical model can be.
- Joshua became Joshua because he had Moses; Elisha became Elisha because he gave himself entirely to emulating Elijah; only he could carry what Elijah carried.
- The sons of the prophets attempted to carry Elijah's grace without Elijah's pattern, and they failed.
"You cannot emulate the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can only lead you. But you cannot emulate the Holy Spirit — how will you do that? You can't emulate what you can't see."
The Pattern of Emulation in Biblical History
- John the Baptist never met Elijah, yet he dressed like Elijah, behaved like Elijah, prayed in the wilderness like Elijah, and produced the results of Elijah.
- Jesus emulated Moses — always going to the mountains to pray, always in gardens, always near trees — because Moses was the foreshadow He was fulfilling.
- The prayer locations of every prophet followed the pattern of the one they emulated: John prayed in the wilderness because Elijah spent his time in the wilderness.
"John the Baptist, who never met Elijah, behaved exactly like Elijah, dressed exactly like Elijah, and produced the results of Elijah."
Imitation Attracts Grace
- Part of attracting an individual's grace is the ability to imitate them — because what you are imitating is the character of the Lord Jesus within a man.
- You have never seen Jesus in the flesh, so God has placed men and women through whom you can observe what Jesus produces and begin to emulate it.
- When you find yourself using a phrase or pattern of prayer from a man of God and results begin to follow, it is because at that moment you have taken on another's character and attracted the grace that is with them.
"Part of attracting somebody's grace is also having the ability to imitate them. If your ability to mimic manifests, then also you will produce the same thing."
You Cannot Become What You Have Never Seen
- God visited Adam physically in the cool of the evening so that Adam had something to observe and emulate — God manifests to you in a way you are able to emulate, because anything else is a disservice.
- God called humanity to conform to the image and likeness of Jesus Christ — to capture His essence, His attitude, His ways, and display them.
- Without imitation, there is no power, no dominion, no subduing — dominion is the fruit of captured likeness.
"You can never become where you have never been. How can you go where you have never been? How can you become what you have never seen?"
The Danger of Spiritual Independence
- Claiming the Holy Spirit will teach you everything while modeling no one produces knowledge-rich but spiritually bankrupt believers.
- Those who follow Scripture alone without a living model are often the most powerless people on earth — many quotations, no results.
- When Moses was commanded to impart into Joshua, he taught Joshua his ways — and God promised to be with Joshua as He was with Moses only on the condition that Joshua followed those ways.
"Unless you are raised up, you cannot become what God wants you to be. You don't know how to become that. How will you become that?"
The Problem of Divided Emulation
- You cannot become what you are called to be if you are simultaneously trying to be shaped by multiple competing environments.
- Attending a church while fragmenting your formation across multiple spiritual houses short-circuits the transfer of grace — knowledge may increase but emulation remains fractured.
- The sons of the prophets all tried to carry Elijah's mantle without Elijah's singular focus, and none of them could do what Elisha did.
"You cannot become what you want to become if you're trying to be other things at the same time."
Observational Emulation: Watching Before You Are Told
- True discipleship is not only receiving instruction — it is the capacity to observe your man or woman of God and begin adopting patterns before you are even told why.
- Jesus took His disciples to the mountain to pray; they fell asleep. But over time, they began praying at the same hour — their character and attitude toward prayer changed through emulation.
- The discipline of building physical and spiritual capacity to carry a grace requires copying the fasting, the prayer rhythm, the lifestyle — not only the theology.
"You have to be observant of your man and woman of God. Some things in mentorship is not because you are saddened and told, do this, do that. It is your ability to sit down, you observe."
Breaking Free from the Past by Emulating the Future
- Things are dying in your life because your emulation also died — when you stopped imitating, you stopped advancing.
- Jesus never attended a funeral while on earth, so His apostles spent their ministry raising the dead rather than attending funerals — the master's pattern defined the disciples' reality.
- The only way to deal with your past is to emulate the future: unless you can emulate your future, you remain in your past.
"The only way to deal with your past is to emulate the future. Unless you can emulate your future, you remain in your past."
Why You Attend Church: Emulating a Relationship, Not Just Receiving Words
- You do not go to church merely to hear the Word of God — you can open your Bible and read it yourself.
- You go to church to emulate the relationship between God and a man or woman who is speaking to you from lived experience of God.
- What God thinks of that person is proven by what He has given them — and if you want to be chosen, you must emulate what God is choosing.
"You don't go to church just to hear the word of God. You go to church to emulate the relationship of God with a man that is speaking to you based on their experience with God."
Key Definitions
Mimēsis (Mimētēs) — The Greek word translated "followers" in Ephesians 5:1, meaning imitators; the active, deliberate copying of another's character, mannerisms, and ways — not merely following their location or repeating their words.
"In the name of Jesus" — Literally in the character and the manner in which Jesus would do it; an invocation of Jesus' character, not merely His title — which means the words carry authority only when the speaker's life reflects that character.
Disciple — One who follows after the master not only in direction but in character, mannerism, and spiritual pattern; a follower who is actively taking on the master's ways so as to produce the master's results.
Grace (in the context of emulation) — The specific spiritual capacity, anointing, or divine favour resting on a chosen individual that can be attracted and transferred through imitation of that person's character and patterns.
Physical Model — A living human being through whom the character of Jesus is made observable and therefore imitable; necessary because you cannot emulate the Holy Spirit, who leads but cannot be physically observed and copied.
Emulation — The active, observational practice of studying and reproducing the patterns, disciplines, prayer rhythms, and mannerisms of a spiritual model in order to build the physical and spiritual capacity to carry the grace that rests upon them.
Key Takeaways
- Christianity's greatest error is teaching people to follow rules without teaching them to imitate God's character — behavioral compliance without character transformation leaves you doing different things while remaining exactly the same person.
- Spiritual power is inseparable from imitation — invoking the name of Jesus, praying, or casting out demons only produces results when the speaker's life reflects the character they are invoking.
- Physical models are not optional — they are the God-ordained mechanism for emulation — because you cannot emulate what you cannot see, God places chosen men and women through whom His ways become observable.
- Divided formation produces fractured grace — you cannot become what God has called you to be while splitting your formation between multiple environments and competing influences.
- Emulating your future is the only exit from your past — what is dying in your life is dying because your emulation died, and the only way forward is to begin imitating the future God is drawing you toward.
Reflection Questions
- Who are you currently emulating spiritually — and is that person someone through whom God has demonstrably proven Himself? If you cannot name a specific model, what has that absence produced in your spiritual life?
- In what areas are you seeking the results of Jesus or of a man or woman of God without adopting the life, disciplines, and patterns that produced those results?
- When you say "in the name of Jesus," does your daily life reflect the character you are invoking? What specific gap exists between the authority you claim in prayer and the life you are living outside of it?
- Are you receiving formation from multiple environments that are pulling you in different directions? What would it look like to give yourself fully to one stream of imitation and build genuine capacity?
- What things are dying or stagnant in your life right now — and is it possible that your emulation of your future has stopped? What specific pattern, discipline, or mannerism of your spiritual model do you need to begin adopting this week?
Prayers and Declarations
Raise your hands. Close your eyes. Look to Jesus and say thank you.
"In the mighty name of Jesus. I see my future. I see my destiny. I see my own windows. I see my success. That will transcend my life. That will go to my children's children's children's children's children. I see my new music, I see my old night in the past, I see all good things. My children shall know good things, my children shall know good things. I see the truth, I see the truth, I see the truth, I see the truth."
