Partnering with God: From Redemption to Divine Friendship
Salvation is not the destination — it is the doorway into a journey of deepening partnership with God.
God's purpose for every believer extends far beyond the moment of salvation. The question every born-again Christian must confront is this: has God redeemed you simply to be saved, or has He called you into something deeper — a place of intimacy, mystery, and divine partnership where you know His heart, carry His power, and operate in His authority?
Teaching Overview
- Number one, we have those who have been redeemed.
- The journey from redemption moves through sonship and servanthood toward the ultimate position: friendship with God.
- Servants know only God's commands, but friends know God's heart — and it is friends whom God entrusts with His mysteries.
- Divine partnership is the realm where believers move from being led by the Spirit to operating in the power of the Spirit, making decisions in alignment with God's heart.
Key Distinctions
| The Redeemed | Sons | Servants | Friends / Partners | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What they are | Infants in Christ who have just entered salvation | Heirs of God's inheritance who know what belongs to them | Those who carry out God's commands faithfully | Those who know God's heart and operate in His authority |
| What they know of God | That Jesus is Lord and they are saved | That all things in Christ belong to them as co-heirs | Only what God has commanded them to do | God's heart, His mysteries, and what the Father has told Him |
| Their involvement in Kingdom business | None — they are receiving and being raised | Aware of what is owned but not involved in managing it | Executing assignments without knowing the Master's full intent | Entrusted with hidden things; able to make decisions in God's name |
| Relationship with God's law | Not yet responsible | Benefiting from the covenant | Upholding the letter of the law precisely | Understanding the heart of God above and behind the law |
| Their limitation | Unqualified and unprotected for ministry | Not yet brought to the table of the Father's business | Cannot discuss with God; cannot minister grace or navigate conflict | No ceiling — Scripture is their foundation, not their limit |
| Scriptural parallel | Infant on milk | Prodigal son before the fall | John the Baptist; Pharisees | Samuel; Elisha; Jesus with the Holy Spirit |
The Redeemed: Infants in Christ
- The redeemed are those who have just entered salvation — they are still in their infancy with God and are not yet involved in Kingdom business.
- At this stage, God does everything for the believer; they are purely benefactors of salvation, not yet stewards of the Word of God.
- No matter how zealous or passionate a newly saved believer is, they are not yet qualified to minister, because ministry is a battlefield against demonic forces — not against human beings.
"You are not qualified because you will die. Because the devil doesn't play fair. Demons don't play fair. If you make a technical mistake, they will destroy you."
The Requirement of Divine Power Before Witnessing
- Acts 1:8 establishes the non-negotiable sequence: power first, then witness — without the Holy Spirit's power, a believer is not qualified to go and minister.
- Stephen was initially appointed only to distribute food, yet God used him mightily because the Holy Spirit was upon him — power is the prerequisite, not personality or passion.
- Anyone preaching without the manifestation of God's power has sent themselves; they were never commissioned.
"You shall receive power after the Holy Ghost has come upon you, then you shall be my witnesses. So no power, no witnessing. No power, no legacy."
The Danger of Self-Appointment
- God is gracious enough to use someone even when they are unqualified, but that use does not constitute approval or sending.
- In Matthew 7, those who prophesied and cast out demons in Jesus' name were rejected not because the works failed, but because they were never sent.
- Stepping outside of your God-given assignment — even with genuine gifting — means everything you do from that point is of your own accord.
"Your gift may still work. You may still be able to set people free, but you will wonder who told you to do what you're doing."
Sonship: Knowing the Inheritance Without Managing It
- After redemption, a believer enters into sonship — the awareness that everything in Christ belongs to them as a co-heir, but without yet being brought to the table of the Father's business.
- A son enjoys the privileges of the covenant but does not yet know the ins and outs of what it takes to steward the family's affairs.
- The transition from sonship into deeper maturity requires the humility of the prodigal son — recognising that everything is by grace, and the best posture is that of a servant.
"He asks his father to just be like one of the servants. Why? Because you realize that you don't deserve anything. All by grace, the best posture I can have is to be what a servant."
The Limitation of Servanthood
- A servant of God is not a partner of God — a servant carries out commands without knowing the Master's intent, upholding exactly what they are told to the letter.
- Servants know God only according to His commands; they cannot understand God beyond Scripture, and for them Scripture is the ceiling rather than the foundation.
- Because servants do not know their Master beyond their assignment, stepping outside that assignment exposes them to spiritual shipwreck.
"You still don't know what your Master is doing. You don't even know him beyond what he has given you to do. And because you don't know him beyond what he has given you to do, it is much easier for you to shipwreck."
The Gospel vs. The Mysteries of the Kingdom
- The gospel is for those who need salvation; mysteries of the kingdom are reserved for those who are matured within the kingdom.
- Preaching the gospel repeatedly to already-saved believers is a misalignment — strong meat belongs to the mature, and milk is for infants.
- The mysteries of the kingdom reveal who is truly mature — not the loudest reciter of Scripture, but the one to whom God has whispered hidden things.
"If you have no mysteries, he hasn't confided in you. If you have no mysteries, he hasn't whispered anything to you. You have nothing except what everybody has."
Friendship with God: The Ultimate Goal
- Jesus declared in John 15:15 that He no longer calls His disciples servants, because a servant does not know what his Lord is doing — He calls them friends, because He has made known to them everything the Father told Him.
- Friendship with God is the realm of divine intimacy where God begins to share hidden things — not because of faithfulness alone, but because of the depth of relationship.
- A friend of God knows not just what God wants to do, but why — and can therefore navigate conflicts, minister grace, and bring resolution between God and those He is displeased with.
"God only tells you things when you become what a friend. When you become a friend, he begins to tell you what his father has told him."
God's Heart Above the Law
- God established the law, but He always upholds His heart above the law — servants cannot comprehend this because they only know God according to His commands.
- John 3:16 demonstrates this tension: the logical side of God demands the law be kept, yet His heart moves behind the scenes to bend the law so that those who cannot keep it can find life.
- The letter of the law was never meant to save anyone — it was meant to reveal how impossible it is for humanity to stand before God without His intervention through Christ.
"God did establish the law, but God always upholds His heart above the law. And servants don't know that."
Operating in Divine Partnership: God Mode
- There is a dimension in the prophetic where the believer is no longer merely being led by the Spirit but has become a partner with the Spirit — operating in God mode, where the anointing can be activated at will in response to need.
- Jesus demonstrates this transition: He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, but He returned in the power of the Spirit — from that point He was no longer a vessel being directed, but a partner operating in authority.
- Elisha operating in this dimension decided to give a son to a barren woman — not waiting for a divine command, but acting from the place of a trusted friend of God who carries His heart.
"When God mode's turned on, you become like Elijah. These guys have entered a place whereby they are now deciding. It is not just the Holy Spirit pushed me."
Key Definitions
The Redeemed — those who have just entered salvation and are in the infancy of their walk with Christ, not yet involved in Kingdom business and not yet qualified for ministry.
Sonship — the stage of spiritual maturity in which a believer is a co-heir with Christ, aware of their inheritance, but not yet brought into the counsel and operational knowledge of the Father's business.
Servant of God — someone who carries out God's commands faithfully and precisely without knowing the Master's heart or intent beyond the specific assignment given to them.
Friend of God — the believer who has entered into divine intimacy with God, to whom God makes known His heart, His mysteries, and the hidden things He has heard from the Father; the one who can operate in partnership rather than merely in obedience.
Gospel — the message of salvation through Christ, designed to bring people into the Kingdom; not the diet for those already matured within the Kingdom.
Mysteries of the Kingdom — hidden truths that God reserves for those who are mature in their relationship with Him; things not available in Scripture but disclosed through intimacy, and the evidence that God has truly confided in someone.
God Mode — a dimension in the prophetic where a believer operates not by being driven by the Spirit but as a conscious partner with the Spirit, able to activate the anointing at will from a place of deep alignment with God's heart.
Key Takeaways
- Salvation is the beginning, not the destination — God's full purpose for the believer is not merely heaven-bound redemption but progressive partnership, intimacy, and authority with Him.
- Servanthood, though honourable, has a ceiling — servants know only what God commands, not who He is, and this limitation makes them vulnerable to shipwreck the moment they step beyond their assignment.
- Friendship with God is the realm of divine mystery — if God has not whispered hidden things to you, the relationship has not yet reached the place He designed; mysteries are the evidence of true intimacy.
- God always honours His heart above His law — understanding this distinction separates those who know God's commands from those who know God's character, and only the latter can truly represent Him.
- Partnership with God means operating in the power of the Spirit, not merely being led by it — the goal is the transition from vessel to co-labourer, where the believer's word carries divine weight because their heart is aligned with God's.
Reflection Questions
- Where are you currently positioned in your walk with God — are you living as the redeemed, a son, a servant, or a friend — and what evidence in your life supports that assessment?
- Are there areas of ministry or assignment you have stepped into based on your gifting or zeal rather than a clear divine commission? What does this teaching say about the fruit of self-appointment?
- Has God entrusted you with mysteries — things He has whispered to you that are not available to everyone? If not, what does this teaching invite you to pursue?
- Do you approach God primarily through the letter of His Word, or through growing knowledge of His heart? What would shift in how you minister and relate to others if you truly grasped the difference?
- What specific step can you take this week to move deeper into friendship with God — not just faithful service, but genuine intimacy where He begins to share what the Father has told Him?
