Shipwrecked: How to Finish Your Spiritual Journey Without Losing Your Faith
Your faith can be shipwrecked not by a lack of prayer, but by a corrupted conscience and a refusal to receive correction.
Many believers start well with God — they are lifted, blessed, and positioned for great things — yet never finish. They get shipwrecked before they ever reach the promise. This teaching confronts the spiritual conditions that cause believers to drift, sink, and lose everything they were called to, and lays out the biblical foundation for finishing strong.
Teaching Overview
- Life is a literal spiritual journey, and every physical action determines spiritual movement — believers can be shipwrecked before reaching God's promise.
- The prophetic word is the wind on your sail — how you position yourself in response to it determines whether it builds or destroys you.
- A corrupted conscience instantly shipwrecks your faith, because faith depends on a clear conscience to function.
- Leaning on your own understanding — through assumption, copying others, and refusing correction — is a primary cause of spiritual shipwreck.
- Receiving correction from spiritual fathers and refusing to assume are essential disciplines for finishing your journey with God.
Key Distinctions
| Hearing God's Word | Receiving the Wisdom of God | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Being exposed to prophetic or scriptural truth | Internalising and applying that truth with understanding |
| How it functions | Positions you and sets things in motion | Guides how you navigate what has been set in motion |
| What happens without it | You have the word but no direction | You pray and still perish |
| Relationship to faith | Faith is activated by the word | Wisdom determines whether faith is exercised correctly |
| Risk of absence | Word becomes a setup for destruction if ignored | Assumption fills the gap and leads to shipwreck |
| Blind Faith | Substantive Faith | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Believing without basis, questioning, or evidence | Believing on the basis of God's conviction and proof |
| Biblical basis | No scriptural support | Hebrews 11:1 — faith is substance and evidence |
| How it works | Passive acceptance without engagement | God convinces and convicts the believer |
| Example | — | Abraham questioning God and receiving clarity before believing |
| Result | Unstable and easily shipwrecked | A grounded, active faith that can navigate storms |
| Trusting Man | Trusting God | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Placing your faith and dependence in a person | Placing your faith in Jesus Christ alone |
| What it leads to | Shipwreck when the person fails or disappoints | Stability and the ability to maintain a clear conscience |
| Is it wrong to love man? | No — we love and can trust man | Yes — but ultimate trust belongs to God alone |
| Result of getting it wrong | Faith becomes idolatry; man becomes God in your eyes | — |
| Consciousness of God | Consciousness of Man | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | Being aware of and present before God's presence throughout the day | Being more aware of people's perception and presence than God's |
| What it produces | Actions done for God, integrity in secret | Actions done for people, behaviour changes when unobserved |
| Effect on conscience | Preserves a clear conscience | Corrupts the conscience gradually |
| Assumption | Knowledge | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Concluding without basis, insight, or foresight | Understanding rooted in revelation, study, and counsel |
| Its origin | Leaning on your own understanding | Trusting God, receiving correction, reading in context |
| Its danger | Mother of all stupidity — leads to wrong actions with confidence | — |
| Example | Diagnosing someone's struggle without knowing the cause | A doctor who tests before prescribing |
| Leaning on Your Own Understanding | Following God's Direction | |
|---|---|---|
| What it looks like | Assumption, copying others, refusing correction, mind always active | Quietness, receiving correction, listening to spiritual fathers |
| Its effect on the journey | Leads to shipwreck even with gifts and anointing | Keeps your compass correct and your sail rightly positioned |
| Biblical warning | Proverbs 3:5-6 — lean not on your own understanding | Proverbs 3:6 — in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths |
Life Is a Spiritual Journey With Real Consequences
- Life is a literal journey to heaven — the spiritual realm is not separate from physical action but is determined by it.
- Everything you do physically determines your movement spiritually; treasure stored on earth through obedience becomes treasure hidden in heaven.
- Hell was created for the devil and his demons, not for human beings — people end up there by choosing the same path of disobedience.
"God is a good God. The Bible says He created hell for the devil and his demons, not for human beings. Human beings end up there because of disobedience."
God Will Finish — But You Must Also Finish
- Many believers have a great start with God but never finish — they get shipwrecked on their way to the promise.
- God finishing His purpose through you does not guarantee that you will finish your own journey or benefit from that purpose.
- Samson is the example: God finished what He started, but Samson got shipwrecked and only recovered through repentance and calling on God.
"God has a purpose for each person. God finished what He started, but it doesn't necessarily mean that person made heaven."
"We ought to benefit from that purpose. If Jesus comes to you, He is coming to do something, and the prayer is that He fulfills what He wants to do, and that you also benefit from what He is doing."
The Prophetic Word Puts Things in Motion
- The prophetic word is the wind that pushes your sail — it positions you and begins setting things in motion whether you are aware of it or not.
- When prophecy is released, both heaven and hell are activated; how you navigate in response to that word determines whether it builds or destroys you.
- The same prophetic word that can save you may also be the same word that sets you up to die — if God tells you to avoid a place and you refuse, the consequences are real.
"Whenever God speaks to you, the prophetic word is the wind on your sail. The prophetic word is the wind that pushes you about in the right direction. When prophecy comes, it will blow on the wind, you will blow on your ship. But your navigation of the ship is up to you."
"Your awareness of what God has said concerning you is wisdom to make sure your compass is correct and that you are steering your ship in the right direction."
Hearing Is Not the Same as Receiving Wisdom
- Hearing God's word and receiving the wisdom of God are two distinct things — prophecy positions you, but wisdom guides how you navigate what has been set in motion.
- Prayer without the wisdom of God leads to perishing, not to deliverance — the people of God perish for lack of knowledge, not lack of prayer.
- Missing any part of the process that God has ordained for you will result in shipwreck.
"It is not just about prayer. If you pray without the wisdom of God, you perish. My people perish because of lack of knowledge, not lack of prayer. If you don't know what you are praying about, you perish."
There Is No Such Thing as Blind Faith
- Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen — it is substantive, not a belief in nothingness.
- Spiritual understanding itself comes from faith, not from study — those whose faith is shipwrecked will find their spiritual understanding is also limited.
- When God spoke to Abraham, He gave him conditions, signs, and practical proof — this is the model of faith: God convicts and convinces the believer.
"Faith — there is no such thing as blind faith. Anyone that has ever told you that, they need to reexamine what they are talking about. If faith is substance, then it cannot be believing in nothingness."
"When God speaks to us, how do we know that God has spoken to us? There is a conviction that will come upon us. God will convict us and God will convince us."
A Corrupted Conscience Shipwrecks Your Faith
- Holding faith and a clear conscience go together — by rejecting a clear conscience, some have made shipwreck of their faith.
- Whenever a child of God corrupts their conscience, faith is instantly affected — a corrupted conscience and active faith cannot coexist.
- Being more conscious of men than of God causes believers to act for people rather than for God, gradually corrupting the conscience.
"Whenever a child of God corrupts their conscience, you have already affected your faith. Whenever a child of God's conscience is messed up, instantaneously, your faith is already shipwrecked."
"We are doing things for people, not for God."
Trusting Man Over God Leads to Shipwreck
- Believing that a man or woman cannot make a mistake is idolatry — it displaces faith in God and places it in a person who will inevitably disappoint.
- We can love and trust man, but we cannot put our ultimate trust in man; trust placed in man rather than God will be shipwrecked.
- When good words from people — rather than a word from God — become the basis of your actions, your faith is left vulnerable when those words do not produce results.
"If you think a man or a woman cannot make a mistake, you just idolize them. You just made them God. So your faith is no longer in God it is in man."
"We love man. We can trust man, but we cannot put our trust in man. If we put our trust in man, we will be shipwrecked and our faith will be affected."
Do Not Lean on Your Own Understanding
- Proverbs 3:5-6 commands trust in God with all your heart and explicitly warns against leaning on your own understanding.
- Assumption is what fills the space when you lean on your own understanding — and assumption, without insight or foresight, is the mother of all stupidity.
- Taking scripture out of its context and building doctrine from a single verse is the direct result of leaning on your own understanding.
"Lean not on your own understanding. This thing people have missed."
"Assumption is the mother of all stupidity. Because when you lean on your own understanding and you have no insight and foresight, you will end up in the realm of assumption."
Receiving Correction From Spiritual Fathers Is Essential
- Moses heard from God face to face yet received correction from his father-in-law Jethro — hearing directly from God does not remove the need for counsel.
- The young prophet in 1 Kings 13 was destroyed because he listened to another man's claim of prophecy rather than holding to what God had specifically told him.
- Receiving correction from spiritual fathers refines you; refusing it — even while having the Holy Spirit and knowing the Bible — will cause you to drown.
"When God has spoken to you, you don't simply do what other people are doing. You do what God is telling you to do. Because if you do what man is telling you to do, and it fails, your faith will be shipwrecked."
"You can have the Holy Spirit. You can read the Bible all you want. God can appear to you. If you cannot listen to another man, you will drown."
"Where God is taking you, what you have will not get you there."
Key Definitions
Shipwreck — The condition of a believer who began well with God but failed to finish their spiritual journey, losing their faith and position through corruption of conscience, assumption, or refusal of correction.
Conscience — The inner moral awareness that, when kept clear, sustains and maintains faith; when corrupted, it instantly affects and shipwrecks a believer's faith.
Prophetic word — The wind on your spiritual sail; a divine utterance that sets things in motion in both the spiritual and physical realms and positions you for God's purpose, the navigation of which determines whether it builds or destroys you.
Faith — As Prophet Lovy states directly: "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" — a substantive, convicting force rooted in what God speaks, not a blind acceptance of nothingness.
Assumption — Concluding or acting without basis, insight, or foresight; what fills the gap when a believer leans on their own understanding rather than trusting God's direction or receiving counsel.
Consciousness of God — Active, moment-by-moment awareness of God's presence that shapes how a believer acts, even in secret; the foundation for keeping a clear conscience.
Key Takeaways
- Life is a spiritual journey where every physical choice has spiritual consequence — believers who do not steward their daily decisions carefully risk being shipwrecked before reaching the promise God has spoken over them.
- God finishing His purpose through you does not mean you will benefit from it — you must actively finish your own journey, not assume that being chosen is enough.
- A clear conscience is not optional — it is the foundation of functional faith — the moment your conscience is corrupted, your faith is already shipwrecked, regardless of how long you have been in church.
- Leaning on your own understanding produces assumption, false doctrine, and spiritual destruction — the antidote is trusting God with all your heart, receiving His word, and remaining open to correction from spiritual authority.
- The prophetic word puts things in motion — your navigation determines the outcome — positioning yourself correctly in response to what God speaks over your life is the warfare He calls you to fight.
Reflection Questions
- Are you genuinely active in your faith community, or have you withdrawn because of what someone did or said — and what does that withdrawal reveal about where your trust is placed?
- Think about the last major decision you made: was it based on a word from God confirmed with conviction, or on a good word from people that felt right at the time?
- Where in your life are you currently leaning on your own understanding — and what would it look like to acknowledge God specifically in that area this week?
- Is there a correction from a spiritual authority you have received but not fully received — one your mind has resisted or argued with? What is holding you back from quieting yourself and submitting to it?
- If your faith feels small or stagnant right now, is it possible it has not shrunk but has been shipwrecked — and what specific thing corrupted your conscience or displaced your trust in God?
