The Breath of God: How the Spirit of God Speaks, Fills, and Produces Life Through You

The Breath of God: How the Spirit of God Speaks, Fills, and Produces Life Through You

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 18 October 2022

The power of your words is not in the words themselves but in the breath of God that carries them.

The language of God is the language of breath. From the creation of Adam to the Day of Pentecost, God has always communicated and imparted His nature through breath—not merely through sound or words. To operate in true spiritual power, the words you speak must carry the breath of God within them, because words without God's breath produce nothing.

Teaching Overview

  1. The language of God is breath — God communicates, creates, and imparts His nature through breath, not merely through words or sound.
  2. The power of life and death is in the tongue because of the breath that carries words, not the words themselves.
  3. To be filled with the Holy Spirit is a progressive, staged experience — God fills what you make available to Him through surrender.
  4. Words are the method by which spiritual things are transferred — both good and evil — and only words carried by the breath of God produce life.
  5. The spirit within you is always revealed by what comes out of you — your words, your reactions, and your breath patterns reflect your inner man.

The Mystery of God's Revelation

  • Scripture is sufficient for salvation, doctrine, and correction — but it does not contain everything God has to reveal.
  • The Holy Spirit is the teacher of things not written — there are mysteries that can only be received by revelation.
  • What was given through Moses, Elijah, and John in Revelation was enough to take us somewhere — but things were deliberately withheld and hidden.

"You know that our God is the God of mysteries. You know they are hidden mysteries that God ordained. Anyone who thinks they know everything about God is foolish because God is the God of all creation, the visible and the invisible."

Knowing God as Advantage

  • To know God is to have an advantage in God — the more you know Him, the greater you can manifest the Lord Jesus.
  • Those who know their God shall do great exploits — spiritual knowledge is the basis of spiritual power.

The Distinction Between Revelatory Gifts

  • Word of knowledge is information — insight into what is happening with someone so you can pray; it is not prophecy.
  • Prophecy unravels what is hidden so that the future can be fixed — a prophetic word changes things because God is speaking.
  • Inside a prophet, word of knowledge, wisdom, and prophecy all function simultaneously — but someone with only the gift of prophecy may give utterance to something they do not fully understand.

"Prophecy unravels what is hidden in order for the future to be fixed. You can't give word of knowledge for 30 minutes because word of knowledge is simply information. Prophecy changes things because it's God speaking."

Prophet by Gifting vs. Prophet by Impartation

  • David was a prophet by impartation from Saul — he was not born a prophet; God chose him because of his heart.
  • David's prophecies came from the realm of worship and utterance — he did not always understand who he was speaking about.
  • Even David, a prophet, needed Nathan the prophet because prophets by gifting can still have blind spots in their own lives.

"That's the difference. David was prophet by gifting."

The Breath of God as God's Language

  • The language of God is the language of breath — God does not merely speak in audible words but communicates by breathing.
  • The word spirit in Hebrew is ruach, meaning breath — not wind in general, but specifically breath.
  • Every human being has encoded within them a language that God responds to — when the inner man cannot respond to the breath of God, you cannot perceive His voice.

"The language of God is the language of breath."

The Creation of Man and the Impartation of Breath

  • Of everything God created, only man received His breath — not even angels are the product of God's breath.
  • God did not simply command man into life — He formed man from dust and then breathed into his nostrils, transferring His own nature.
  • True impartation of one spirit to another is only accomplished by breath — not by prayer, not by laying on of hands.

"God transfers his nature into another man by breathing on them."

Jesus Breathes on the Disciples

  • Jesus repeated the same action God performed with Adam — He breathed on the disciples and said, "Receive the Holy Ghost."
  • Before the Spirit could descend on the disciples at Pentecost, Jesus first had to breathe on them.
  • The words Jesus spoke were spirit and life — every time He spoke, He was distributing His nature into situations as God breathed into Adam.

"Why is Jesus blowing on them, saying receive the Holy Spirit? ... You cannot have the Spirit of God descend on you unless He has breathed on you."

The Power Is in the Breath, Not the Words

  • The Bible does not say words have power — it says the power of life and death is in the tongue, because the tongue carries breath.
  • Words spoken without the breath of God can sound powerful, declare good things, and still produce nothing.
  • The devil can only affect the soul through words — but words loaded with the breath of God affect the spirit and change reality.

"The power of life and death is in the tongue. It doesn't say it's in the words. It is in the breath that is sending the word."

The Spirit Within Is Revealed by What Comes Out

  • What comes out of a person reveals the spirit within — Jesus said it is not what goes into a man that defiles him but what comes out.
  • When you are under pressure, your breathing pattern changes — anger, nervousness, conviction, and grief all alter breath because the inner man is expressing itself.
  • When a demon leaves, it departs like air or breath — because spirit always expresses itself through wind or breath.

"The spirit within you will always be reflected by what comes out of you."

Life in the Blood vs. Life in the Spirit

  • Life is in the blood — but blood sustains physical life, not spiritual life; Adam had blood flowing and God still declared him dead.
  • The life of God is received through the Holy Spirit — you are born of the wind, born of the Spirit of God, not born of the blood of Jesus.
  • The blood of Jesus was shed to appease God and remove His anger — but the life of God is imparted by His breath.

"Someone can have life running in them, blood running in them but it doesn't mean they are alive."

The Spirit's Departure as Spiritual Death

  • When the Spirit of God departs from a person, they are spiritually dead regardless of physical life.
  • David understood this — in Psalm 51 he prayed, "Lord, don't take your spirit from me. Don't take your breath from me."
  • When God abandoned Saul, He proved it by taking His spirit — the breath of God departed, and with it all power.

"When the Spirit of God departs, you are spiritually dead."

Words as Spiritual Transfer — Both Good and Evil

  • Words are the method by which spiritual things are transferred — this applies to both blessing and cursing.
  • Spells require words because words are an invocation — a connection to a specific spiritual language.
  • Men with a fallen nature carry the language of Satan — they use words to invoke demons because language is the access point to all spiritual reality.

"It is by words that things are transferred spiritually. Both good and evil."

The Power to Bless Requires the Breath of God

  • Not everyone who says good things has the power to bless — the power to bless is determined by what spirit — what wind — is inside of you.
  • The Spirit of God must not merely inhabit your body — He must possess your words, because everything God created He created by words.
  • Declaring favor and blessing without the breath of God in your words means those declarations carry no life to produce anything.

"In order for you to bless, it is determined by what wind is inside of you."

Speaking in the Spirit vs. Speaking in the Flesh

  • God does not hear you because you prayed for two or six hours — length is not the measure; whether you are speaking in the spirit or in the flesh is.
  • Speaking in the flesh means speaking in a language God does not respond to — there is a conflict of language between natural speech and God's breath-language.
  • God will not descend to where you are in how He speaks — you must rise to where He is, and that requires your inner man to carry His breath.

"If you're waiting for God to meet you where you are in terms of how He speaks you have played yourself."

The Staged Filling of the Holy Spirit

  • Being filled with the Holy Spirit happens in stages — Jesus breathed on the apostles before Pentecost, and each was a distinct impartation.
  • The Holy Spirit fills what you have made available — areas of your life that have not been surrendered remain unfilled.
  • As you surrender more through brokenness and yielding, the Holy Spirit fills each newly surrendered area until every inch — tongue, ears, eyes — is filled.

"To be filled by the Spirit of God is in stages."

"God will fill what you made available."

The Contradiction of Mixed Speech

  • Some men of God are faithful and love God yet speak blessing and cursing from the same tongue — this is a contradiction the Scripture will not permit.
  • James asks whether a spring can produce both sweet and unclean water — the answer is no, and the same applies to the tongue.
  • One tongue cannot produce both the life of God and corrupt speech — mixed speech reveals that not every part of the person has been surrendered to the Holy Spirit.

"One tongue cannot produce both clean and unclean water."

Key Definitions

Ruach — The Hebrew word for spirit, meaning specifically breath — not wind in general but the personal breath that carries life and nature from one being to another.

Word of Knowledge — A New Testament revelatory gift that provides insight into what is happening with a person so that you can pray; it is information, not prophecy, and cannot be given for thirty minutes.

Prophecy — Detailed revelation from God that unravels what is hidden in order for the future to be fixed; it changes things because God Himself is speaking.

Prophet by Gifting — A prophet who operates prophetically through a God-given gift of utterance from the realm of worship, but who may not fully understand what is being spoken and can have blind spots in their own life — as seen in David.

Prophet by Impartation — A prophet who receives their prophetic anointing transferred from another vessel; David received this from Saul through Samuel's anointing.

Life-Giving Spirit — The nature Jesus became after resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:45); the distinction between someone who is physically alive and someone whose words and presence carry the breath of God that can produce life in others.

Key Takeaways

  • The language of God is breath, not merely words — understanding this repositions how you pray, how you listen, and how you speak, because God communicates in a dimension that natural speech cannot reach.
  • Power is in the breath that carries words, not in the words themselves — this means declarations, positive confessions, and long prayers produce nothing if the speaker does not carry the breath of God within them.
  • Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a progressive experience of surrender — waiting for a one-time event misses the reality that the Spirit fills each area you yield, and the process continues throughout your life.
  • Your words always reveal your inner spirit — what comes out of you under pressure, in private, or in speech is not accidental; it is an accurate disclosure of what is actually inside you.
  • God does not meet you in the language of the flesh — the burden of rising to God's language falls on you, and it requires your inner man to be progressively transformed by His breath.

Reflection Questions

  1. When you speak — in prayer, in declaration, in daily conversation — are your words loaded with the breath of God, or are they the natural words of someone who has not yet fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit?
  2. What areas of your life have you not yet yielded to God, and how might those un-surrendered areas be limiting the Holy Spirit's ability to fill you and speak through you?
  3. When you are under pressure or conflict, what comes out of you? Does your speech reveal the breath of God within you, or does it reveal a part of you that has not yet been taken over by the Holy Spirit?
  4. Are you waiting for God to meet you where you are in how He speaks — or are you actively pursuing the inner transformation required to perceive and speak in the language of God?
  5. Is there a contradiction between what you speak in public and what comes out of you in private? What does that contradiction reveal about what has — and has not — been surrendered to God?
