The Dark Arts in the Church: Witchcraft, Misunderstanding, and the Diversity of God's Power

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 6 May 2023

The greatest threat to the church is not the warlock outside — it is the manipulation and misunderstanding operating within.

The true "dark arts" in the church is not sorcery from without — it is witchcraft, defined as manipulation, operating from within through ignorance of God's diverse gifts, administrations, and operations. When believers and ministers fail to gain understanding of how God works, they demonize what is unfamiliar, calling good evil and labeling genuine manifestations of God's power as demonic. Scripture establishes that curses without cause cannot stand, that the gates of hell cannot prevail against the church, and that wisdom, knowledge, and understanding are the armor against this deception.

Teaching Overview

  1. Ignorance and misunderstanding — not witchcraft from outside — are the primary threats to the believer and the church.
  2. God's church is protected by His own nature: He neither slumbers nor sleeps, and a curse without a cause shall not stand.
  3. There are diversities of gifts, administrations, and operations — all working from the same God — and failure to understand this leads believers to demonize legitimate moves of God.
  4. True witchcraft in the church is manipulation born from misunderstanding, not conjurations from outside, which cannot prevail against those who are in Christ.
  5. The test of a genuine minister is not the style of their operation but the fruit it produces and whether they direct people toward or away from Jesus.

The Primacy of Understanding

  • Ignorance is the primary environment in which the believer fails — the more God is understood, the better one works with Him.
  • Arguments between believers, spouses, nations, and ministers are overwhelmingly rooted not in malice but in the lack of understanding.
  • Wisdom without understanding is useless; knowledge without understanding is useless — understanding is the activating faculty that makes both profitable.

"In all your getting, get understanding. If you don't have understanding, you will mishandle even the right things."

"This spirit of understanding is very important because there is the spirit of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. If you have wisdom without understanding your useless, if you have knowledge without understanding your useless."

Eyes of the Spirit vs. Eyes of Understanding

  • Having spiritual eyes open — seeing visions and receiving revelation — does not automatically mean one has spiritual understanding of what has been seen.
  • Daniel received visions from God, yet God had to send the angel Gabriel specifically to give him understanding of those visions — meaning God can speak to a person who still lacks the understanding to interpret what was spoken.
  • A believer can read Scripture without gaining understanding unless the Spirit of God ministers to them, or a servant of God with understanding of that subject comes and enlightens them.

"Just because your spiritual eyes are open doesn't mean you have spiritual understanding. Just because I saw a vision doesn't mean I understand it."

"It is absolutely paramount for a child of God to gain understanding."

God's Protection of the Church

  • God protects His church not because of the church's merit but because the church is His bride — the purpose embedded in her is beyond present human comprehension, hidden in God Himself.
  • The Lord declared to Peter that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the church — meaning even if hell's doors are opened upon the church, it will never succeed.
  • Throughout history — from Balaam's attempts to curse Israel, to Roman persecution of the apostles, to modern censorship and martyrdom — the church has not been destroyed; it has become stronger.

"What does that mean? It doesn't matter what warlock, what evil spirits try to do against the church. They will never succeed because it's his bride."

"The church is not going anywhere. This is the reality."

The Curse That Cannot Stand

  • A curse without a cause shall not stand — Proverbs 26:2 establishes that witchcraft directed at those who are in Christ has no legal ground on which to operate.
  • Balaam, a sorcerer commissioned to curse Israel, could not execute his assignment — his own words became the testimony: "How can I curse those which God has blessed?"
  • Satan does not primarily attack through external curses; he operates in the place of a believer's ignorance — ignorance is his entry point, not incantations.

"Satan always possesses your ignorance. He will operate in the place of your ignorance."

Diversities of Gifts, Administrations, and Operations

  • Scripture establishes in 1 Corinthians 12:4–6 that there are diversities of gifts, differences of administrations, and diversities of operations — all proceeding from the same God, the same Lord, and the same Spirit.
  • Two ministers may carry the same gift but operate in it differently — different depth, different expression, different administration — and this is not error or deception; it is God's design.
  • The biblical measure for determining whether a ministry is from God is not the style or appearance of its operation, but the fruit it produces and whether it points people toward Jesus or away from Him.

"It is not that it is a different God."

The Root of Demonizing Unfamiliar Operations

  • Those who demonize unfamiliar operations of God's Spirit are most often operating from past disappointments, past hurts, or the simple fact that they have never seen such a thing — and what is foreign to their experience becomes, in their assessment, demonic.
  • God expresses Himself through His servants in ways that will always be a problem to man — no person in Scripture walked in genuine power and was not misunderstood.
  • John the Baptist was called demon-possessed because he neither ate nor drank in the customary way; Jesus was called a drunkard and friend of sinners because He did eat and drink — both were accused falsely because their operations did not conform to what the accusers expected.

"People will want you to have the word of God. But never the power of God."

True Witchcraft: Manipulation Through Ignorance

  • The true dark art operating in the church is witchcraft defined as manipulation — not conjurations and spells, which cannot prevail against those redeemed in Christ.
  • A form of godliness that denies the power of God — 2 Timothy 3:5 — is itself a manifestation of this dark art: it looks like Christianity while actively suppressing the genuine operations of God's Spirit.
  • The test Scripture provides for identifying a false prophet is not the strangeness of his operation but his direction: if a prophet, even one whose signs come to pass, directs people to serve other gods they do not know, he is not from God — Deuteronomy 13:1–3.

"Satan always possesses your ignorance. He will operate in the place of your ignorance."

Key Definitions

Understanding — The faculty that activates wisdom and knowledge; without it, both wisdom and knowledge become useless, and even right things are mishandled.

Eyes of Understanding — A distinct spiritual faculty, separate from the eyes of the spirit, that enables a believer to correctly interpret and comprehend what has been seen or revealed; Daniel had visions but required Gabriel to supply this separately.

Diversity of Gifts — The variety of spiritual gifts distributed by the same Spirit among believers, meaning the same gift may manifest with different depth and expression in different ministers.

Diversity of Administrations — The different ways a gift is structured, ordered, and expressed in ministry — shaped by calling, background, upbringing, and the specific grace given to that minister.

Diversity of Operations — The different ways God Himself works through each gift and each minister; two people doing visibly different things may both be operating under the same God.

Witchcraft (in the church context) — Manipulation — not conjuration or spells — operating through ignorance and misunderstanding of God's diverse operations; the true dark art within the church.

Key Takeaways

  • Understanding is the most critical spiritual faculty a believer can possess — without it, wisdom and knowledge become instruments of mishandling rather than instruments of God.
  • The church is indestructible because it is the bride of Christ, not because of its own strength — no warlock, evil spirit, political power, or persecution has ever succeeded in destroying it, and none ever will.
  • Diversity of gifts, administrations, and operations is God's design, not a sign of deception — judging a ministry by whether it looks familiar, rather than by its fruit and its direction toward Jesus, is itself a form of spiritual blindness.
  • Satan's primary instrument against believers is ignorance — a curse without a cause cannot stand, and demonic oppression gains no complete hold on those in Christ except where ignorance creates a foothold.
  • The true dark art in the church is witchcraft defined as manipulation — and it is most dangerous when it masquerades as discernment, labelling the genuine power of God as demonic because it is unfamiliar.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what areas of your faith have you demonized something unfamiliar rather than seeking genuine understanding — and what would change if you pursued understanding instead of suspicion?
  2. Have you been using the standard of familiarity to evaluate ministers and ministries, rather than the biblical standard of fruit and direction toward Jesus? What does that reveal about the foundation of your discernment?
  3. Where in your life has ignorance — rather than external attack — been the real open door to fear, deception, or spiritual stagnation?
  4. Are you someone who accepts the Word of God but resists or avoids the power of God? What would it cost you to genuinely welcome both?
  5. If wisdom and knowledge without understanding are useless, what specific area of your understanding of God and His operations do you most urgently need to pursue?
