The Devil's Christian: Recognising the Signs of Spiritual Emptiness
The Devils Christian · Part 1 of 2
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a label you carry — it is a life you must progressively enter.
Being filled with the Holy Spirit is not a one-time event marked by a date in your spiritual history. It is a progressive, multidimensional exchange in which God increasingly occupies every part of your being — body, soul, mind, and spirit. The danger for many believers is that they measure this filling physically rather than spiritually, and in doing so, they become vulnerable to a subtle but devastating drift: from being a Christian by the Holy Spirit to being a Christian by the devil.
Teaching Overview
- Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a progressive walk, not a one-time event — the apostles themselves were filled multiple times.
- The fullness of the Spirit is measured by how much of your entire being — body, soul, mind, and spirit — has been yielded to God.
- A Christian who does not hunger for the Word of God is in danger of becoming someone else's Christian — a Christian by the devil rather than by the Spirit.
- The Word of God is the primary weapon against deception and spiritual emptiness — Jesus resisted the devil not by binding him but by quoting Scripture.
- Satan cannot be resisted by human will alone — only those filled with the Holy Spirit and covered by the Lord Jesus Christ can stand against the fallen cherubim.
Key Distinctions
| Christians by the Holy Spirit | Christians by Title | Christians by the Flesh | Christians by the Devil | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What defines them | Progressively filled with the Spirit, bearing fruit of righteousness | Identify as Christians without spiritual substance | Operate from natural, carnal impulses rather than Spirit | Started well but drifted; justify a false fellowship with God |
| Relationship to God's Word | Hunger for, meditate on, and delight in the Word day and night | Indifferent — the Word is neither priority nor delight | Selective — receive what pleases the flesh | Reject or replace it — the Word has no place in them |
| Awareness of spiritual need | Pursue deeper filling and transformation | Unaware they need deliverance or growth | Partially aware but unmotivated | Self-deceived — convinced they and Jesus are in good standing |
| Response to sin | Cannot comfortably remain in sin — the Spirit convicts and fills the space | Sin may persist without deep conviction | Sin is rationalized or minimized | Sin is normalized and unjustified separation from God goes unrecognised |
| Spiritual vulnerability | Filled vessels leave no room for demonic influence | Open to deception through spiritual shallowness | Susceptible to the lusts of the flesh | Actively under influence of another spirit without knowing it |
| Relationship to prophecy | Grounded in Scripture; prophecy draws them closer to God | May seek prophecy as spiritual validation | Love prophecy because it caters to physical desires | Prioritize prophetic words over the Word of God |
| Spiritual Work | Physical Work | |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Measured by the degree of God's presence and Spirit filling the believer | Measured by visible religious activity, tenure, or external markers |
| Standard of measurement | How much of your being has yielded to the Holy Spirit | How long you have been saved or attending church |
| Evidence | Transformation, freedom from sin, power, fruit of righteousness | Declarations like "I've been born again since 1975" |
| Danger of confusion | Leads to spiritual self-deception and stagnation | Produces false assurance without genuine spiritual growth |
| One-Time Filling | Progressive Filling | |
|---|---|---|
| What it assumes | The Spirit is received once and the work is complete | The Spirit must increasingly occupy every part of the believer's being |
| Biblical example | A misreading of Pentecost as the final event | The apostles were filled at least three distinct times in Scripture |
| Jesus' own experience | — | Jesus received the Spirit within at birth, upon at the Jordan, and in power after the wilderness |
| Implication for believers | Produces complacency and spiritual stagnation | Demands continued surrender, hunger, and yielding |
| Abraham's Seed — Their Understanding | Abraham's Seed — The Fulfillment | |
|---|---|---|
| What they knew | They were biological descendants of Abraham and entitled to His covenant promises | Through Christ, all who believe are grafted in and become descendants of Abraham |
| What they missed | They were in bondage even while claiming freedom — under Roman rule and under sin | True freedom comes through the Son; those whom the Son sets free are free indeed |
| Claim made | "We have never been in bondage to any man" | They were under Roman subjection at the very moment they made the claim |
| Error | Knowing the promise without entering the fulfillment | Rejecting the One through whom the promise is fulfilled |
| Who carries the blessing | Biological Israel by descent | All who come to Christ — healing and deliverance belong to Abraham's children |
| Fallen Cherubim (Lucifer) | Fallen Angels / Demons | |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | A cherubim — a being of the highest created order | Lower-ranking spiritual beings |
| Power | Has the power to compel — whether you resist or not — without the Spirit of God | Operate at a lower level of spiritual authority |
| Who can resist him | Only those in Christ — it takes God; no human will alone can stand him | Can be resisted through prayer, the name of Jesus, and spiritual authority |
| Common confusion | Believers dismiss him as powerless — he is powerless only for those in Christ | Often conflated with Satan, underestimating the difference in rank and authority |
| Biblical title | "The God of this world" — the whole world system runs through him | Servants of the prince of the power of the air |
The Nature of Work with God
- Everything that functions in the Kingdom of God is a spiritual work, not a physical one.
- Many believers measure their walk with God physically — by how long they have been saved — rather than spiritually, by how much of their being has been yielded to the Holy Spirit.
- A declaration like "I've been born again since 1975 and I'm full of the Holy Ghost" is a physical measurement, not a spiritual one.
Multiple Fillings of the Holy Spirit
- Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a walk — not a one-time event.
- The apostles themselves were filled with the Holy Spirit at least three distinct times: Jesus breathed on them and gave them the Spirit within; they received the Spirit upon at Pentecost; and they were filled again with boldness after being beaten and returning to prayer.
- Jesus gave the disciples the Spirit within when He breathed on them, the Spirit upon at Pentecost, and then filled them again when the room shook and they received boldness.
Filling as a Matter of Perspective
- Being filled is measured by how much of your vessel — your body and soul — is available for the Holy Spirit to occupy.
- If the Holy Spirit has filled your heart but your mouth still curses, there remains a part of you He has not yet filled.
- If your lips no longer curse but your mind still thinks carnally, you are still not fully filled — the carnal mind is enmity with God.
The Seven Spirits of God
- As a child of God, fullness comes through the sevenfold Spirit of God: the Spirit of the Lord, wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord.
- Without the Spirit of the Lord, Jesus cannot be Lord to you — you cannot recognize Him as Lord, give your life to Him, or see Him as your only way without that Spirit first entering you.
- The first infilling of the Spirit is not fear of hell compelling a decision — it is the Spirit of the Lord entering you so that you can truly see Jesus as your Master, your Lord, and your Savior.
"Without the spirit of the Lord, Jesus cannot be Lord to you."
Jesus' Example of Being Filled with the Spirit
- Jesus, though conceived of the Spirit and already Spirit-filled within, still went to the Jordan to be baptized — because there was a next level of filling He needed to enter in order to fulfill all righteousness.
- When Jesus was baptized, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit came upon Him, beginning to lead Him — this was a distinct and progressive infilling beyond what He already carried.
- Jesus submitted to baptism by John not because He lacked righteousness, but because fulfilling righteousness required entering the fullness of right standing through that act.
Jesus Learning Obedience
- Jesus entered the wilderness led by the Holy Spirit and came out in the power of the Spirit — this transition represents a third dimension of Spirit-filling that released the signs and wonders of His ministry.
- Before leaving the wilderness, the extraordinary works of power were not yet flowing from Him — it was the Spirit of might received there that released them.
- The Lord Jesus — who is God — had to learn obedience in human form, submit to a man for baptism, and walk through the wilderness to receive each successive dimension of the Spirit.
"The Lord Jesus received might, the spirit of might and power when He left the wilderness."
Evidence of Being Filled with the Holy Spirit
- A person filled with the Holy Spirit cannot remain comfortable in sin — not in lying, envy, backbiting, or sickness — because the purpose of one filled with the Spirit is to please the Father.
- When the Spirit fully occupies a believer, there is no room left for the devil to enter — the filling itself is the protection.
- The instruction to "walk in the Spirit" presupposes being filled with the Spirit — you cannot walk in what you have not received.
"When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, your purpose is to please the Father. You are not interested in anything else except bring people to Him."
Mercy and Progression in the Spirit
- Even one percent of the Holy Spirit in a believer is more than the entire world possesses — a portion of God is already inside them.
- With only a portion of the Spirit, a believer may experience some breakthrough, some words of knowledge, and some answered prayer — but their life will still carry struggle and limitation because they do not yet have the fullness of God.
- God's mercy covers the believer who is being perfected — salvation is not conditional on fullness, but the quality and power of the Christian life is.
The Exchange of Fullness
- Being filled with the Spirit is an exchange — the more of God enters you, the more of yourself you deposit into Him, until your body becomes fully His.
- Jesus in you and you in Jesus is the fullness of what it means to be Spirit-filled — without this union, productivity in the Kingdom is limited.
- When this exchange reaches a certain dimension, encounters with the Lord and angelic visitation cease to be extraordinary prayer points — they become the natural reality of life in the Spirit.
"The experience of God is to be filled with Him and Him filling you. That is the experience of God."
Peter's Spiritual Dimension
- Peter was so filled with the Spirit that his shadow healed people without prayer — this represents a dimension of filling where the living presence of God flows through a believer without effort.
- At this level, the believer no longer needs to strive for spiritual experiences — they are in a place where living in the miraculous is automatic.
- Peter was so deep in the spirit while in prison that even after an angel physically broke his chains and led him out of the city, he did not know whether he was dreaming or awake until he came back to himself in the street.
The Reality of Spiritual Beings
- Without God, no human being can stand in the presence of the fallen cherubim — Lucifer carries a power to compel that operates regardless of human resistance.
- Lucifer is not to be confused with ordinary demons — he is the fallen cherubim, a being of entirely different rank and power whose authority extends over the entire world system.
- Paul confirms that before coming to Christ, every person was being controlled by the prince of the power of the air — not indwelt, but compelled — without even knowing it.
"Without the Lord Jesus, without the Holy Spirit, without the angels of God, no one can resist Satan."
Foundation: Four Categories of Christians
- There are four categories of Christians: Christians by the Holy Spirit, Christians by title, Christians by the flesh, and Christians by the devil.
- Christians by the devil are those who started well but have drifted to a place where they and God cannot walk together — yet they have convinced themselves that they and Jesus are in good standing.
- They assume they are walking with the Lord when they are not — self-deception, not rebellion, is the defining characteristic of a devil's Christian.
John 8 and Abraham's Seed
- The Pharisees in John 8 held a correct understanding of identity — they were Abraham's seed — but had not entered the fulfillment of what that identity meant.
- Healing and deliverance belong to the children of Abraham — and through Christ, all who believe are grafted into the house of Israel and become descendants of Abraham, carriers of the promise.
- At the very moment they declared they had never been in bondage, they were under Roman subjection — the self-deception of those who know a promise without living in its reality.
Freedom from Sin: The Son Sets You Free
- Whoever commits sin is a servant of sin — and a servant does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever.
- Jesus was showing the Pharisees that there was a dimension of freedom they had not yet entered — the freedom that only the Son can give.
- Anything not done of faith is sin — and in refusing to receive Jesus, they remained servants of sin while claiming the privileges of sonship.
"Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
The First Sign of a Devil's Christian
- The first sign of a devil's Christian is that the Word of God has no place in them — human reasoning and theory make more sense to them than what God has said.
- The gladness a believer feels when the Word of God is opened is evidence of belonging to God — because Jesus said those who love Him hear His Word, do it, and keep it.
- Every time the Word of God is rejected, another voice is received in its place — and if you are not hearing His voice, you are by definition listening to someone else's.
"If you don't have the hunger for the word of God, you need to check yourself. Something else has filled the place where God should be."
The Chain Effect of Neglecting God's Word
- When the enemy sets a trap to pull a believer away from God, it begins with small things — a heaviness when reading the Word, an ease with entertainment, an inability to give God even ten undistracted minutes.
- The delight of the righteous is in God's Word — they meditate on it day and night; when that delight disappears, something has taken its place.
- Physical prophecy caters to the needs of the physical man — but the spiritual man is destined for a dimension where there will be no more prophecy, only the fullness of God's presence.
"The delight of the righteous is His word. They meditate upon it day and night."
Jesus' Focus Was the Mysteries of the Kingdom
- Jesus did not spend His ministry dispensing personal prophecies to His disciples — He taught them the mysteries of the Kingdom, because knowledge of God's Word is how the voice of God is confirmed.
- Studying the nature of God through Scripture equips a believer to recognize God's voice — not only because the Holy Spirit bears witness in the spirit, but because the Word has already established the personality and counsel of God within the soul.
- When Scripture is studied faithfully, a believer no longer needs external confirmation to know they have heard from God.
"When I read Scripture, I am gathering the personality of God. I am gathering the nature of God. I am gathering the counsel of God so that when God speaks to me, I know it is God."
The Power of God's Word Spoken Aloud
- Jesus resisted the devil not by binding him, pleading the blood, or calling for angelic protection — He simply quoted Scripture.
- The Word of God was never meant to be read silently — it was designed to be spoken aloud, because God declared that His Word shall not return to Him void.
- When the Word is spoken over your life and atmosphere daily, it functions as a divine force — not merely inspiration but active spiritual power.
"Do you know the word of God was never meant to be read silently? It was meant to be spoken out."
Using Scripture as a Daily Weapon
- Scripture can and must be applied personally and specifically — Psalm 89:20–21, spoken over yourself as a descendant of David through Christ, becomes God's declaration of establishment and strength over your life.
- The believer who knows how to use Scripture is not a passive recipient of whatever the enemy brings — they come into each day having already spoken God's counsel over themselves.
- The Word of God is dangerous in the hands of a believer who knows how to use it — it transforms the atmosphere, confounds the enemy, and establishes divine authority.
Canon, Scripture, and the Council of Nicaea
- The Council of Nicaea was not convened to remove books from the Bible — it was convened to settle the question of the divinity of Christ, affirming that Jesus is God in the flesh, the third Person of the Holy Trinity.
- The 66 books of the Bible were always canonical — the Apocrypha and books like the Gospel of Thomas were never placed in the same position of authority as the 66.
- A devil's Christian is often drawn to conspiracy theories about Scripture — the claim that books were removed from the Bible reveals a lack of knowledge of church history and a susceptibility to deception.
Key Definitions
Filled with the Holy Spirit — Not a one-time event at conversion but a progressive exchange in which the Holy Spirit increasingly occupies every part of the believer's being — body, soul, mind, and spirit — until the believer is in Christ and Christ is in them.
Christians by the devil — Those who began well in faith but have drifted to a place where they and God cannot walk together, yet have convinced themselves through self-deception that they and Jesus are in good standing; identifiable by the absence of hunger for God's Word.
The fallen cherubim — Lucifer, a being of the highest created rank — distinct from and far above ordinary demons and fallen angels — who possesses the power to compel human beings whether they resist or not, and who can only be resisted through the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
The seven spirits of God — The sevenfold Spirit of God described in Isaiah 11: the Spirit of the Lord, wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord — the fullness through which a believer is progressively filled.
Abraham's seed — The covenant identity that carries the promises of God, including healing and deliverance; through Christ, all who believe are grafted into the house of Israel and become descendants of Abraham, the carriers of God's promise to bless the earth.
Canon — The 66 books of the Bible, always recognized as authoritative Scripture; the Council of Nicaea was not a gathering to debate or alter the canon but to establish the divinity of Christ and the doctrine of the Trinity.
Key Takeaways
- Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a progressive walk, not a one-time declaration — spiritual maturity is measured by how much of your entire being has been yielded to God, not by how long you have been saved.
- A hunger for God's Word is the primary evidence that you belong to Him — the absence of that hunger is the first and most telling sign that something else has taken God's place.
- Jesus resisted the devil through Scripture, not spiritual warfare formulas — the Word of God spoken aloud is not background noise; it is an active, atmospheric force that the enemy cannot override.
- No human being can stand against Lucifer in their own strength — he is the fallen cherubim, the god of this world, and only those in Christ with the Holy Spirit dwelling in them are covered.
- Self-deception is the defining mark of a devil's Christian — they do not know they have drifted; they have convinced themselves they are walking with God while God does not recognize the fellowship they claim.
Reflection Questions
- If you honestly measured your spiritual filling not by when you were saved but by how much of your body, mind, soul, and speech has been yielded to the Holy Spirit — what percentage would you estimate, and what parts of you have not yet been surrendered?
- When you sit down to read the Word of God, is there gladness and hunger — or does something in you resist, grow drowsy, or find it easier to turn to entertainment? What does your honest answer reveal about whose voice you are listening to?
- Jesus resisted the devil solely by quoting Scripture. How much of God's Word do you currently carry in you — memorized, meditated on, and ready to speak — and what would need to change for the Word to become your first response?
- The self-deceived believe they and Jesus are in good standing when He does not recognize the fellowship they claim. Is there any area of your life where you have justified a distance from God rather than confronting it honestly?
- Prophecy serves the physical man and draws him toward God — but the destination is the fullness of God's presence, not perpetual need for prophetic direction. Are you pursuing the Word and the presence of God for Himself, or primarily seeking spiritual experiences that serve your physical needs and comfort?
