The Spirit of Understanding

The Spirit of Understanding

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 9 September 2025

The capacity to comprehend spiritual truth is more essential than knowledge, wisdom, or natural intelligence.

The spirit of understanding is not mere knowledge or intellectual ability—it is the breath of God that reveals hidden things and opens the eyes of the heart. Without it, believers experience spiritual blindness, miscommunication with God, fractured relationships within the church, and failure to walk in the fullness of what God has provided.

Teaching Overview

  1. The spirit of understanding—distinct from natural understanding or mere study—is the critical missing element in the church today, causing conflict between believers, leaders, and God Himself.
  2. Understanding is foundational to all spiritual growth; without it, knowledge, visions, fasting, and study produce spiritual dullness rather than divine power.
  3. A true teacher does not merely possess knowledge but possesses the capacity to bring students from ignorance into maturity by navigating the landscape of their individual understanding.
  4. Knowledge without understanding—illustrated by Adam and Eve eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil instead of the tree of life—causes people to devalue what they do not comprehend and to act on fear rather than revelation.
  5. God ordains all His instructions with understanding attached; He does not demand blind obedience, and His word always carries the light of comprehension with it.
  6. The seven spirits of God—the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge, and the Spirit of the fear of the Lord—are distinct anointings, and possessing one does not guarantee possession of another.
  7. When understanding is absent, miscommunication between you and God increases; when it is present, your faith deepens, your prayer life transforms, and you move from religious routine into authentic relationship with God.

The Spirit of Understanding Defined and Separated

  • The spirit of understanding is the key that unlocks what natural eyes cannot see—it is not knowledge, wisdom, or natural intelligence, but the breath of God that makes hidden things clear.
  • When the Spirit of understanding rests upon you, you do not merely hear but comprehend; you do not merely see but discern; mysteries unfold and your path becomes light.
  • The spirit of understanding is completely different from regular, natural understanding that comes by study—natural understanding may produce intelligent speech, but spiritual understanding produces divine power and transformation.

"The spirit of understanding is the key that opens what eyes cannot see. It is more than knowledge. It is the breath of God that makes hidden things clear."

The Missing Element in the Church

  • The spirit of understanding is what is absent in the church, and this absence creates conflict not only between believers and leaders but also between God and His people.
  • When God speaks and you misunderstand Him, conflict arises—miscommunication between the Divine and the human breaks fellowship and prevents obedience.
  • The battles within the church, between ministers, and among those who have crowned themselves leaders without qualification all stem from one root: the absence of the spirit of understanding.

"When there is no understanding, conflicts begin not only to the one who is trying to communicate but even to the one that is receiving the message, people will begin to bump heads and people will begin to fight."

Natural Understanding Versus Spiritual Understanding

  • The apostles who transformed the world were not learned in Jewish tradition or Scripture—most had no formal training—yet after the Holy Spirit descended upon them, they spoke with power that confounded the learned, proving that spiritual understanding surpasses natural education.
  • God is a spiritual being, and because most people live in the physical realm, mutual understanding between God and humanity is impossible unless one surrenders to the other; since God will not surrender, you must enter into spiritual understanding.
  • Spiritual understanding does not come from reading the Bible; it comes from encounter with God—the apostles had no Scripture to study from, only the Spirit of God, yet they gave the world the very Scripture that has sometimes made believers spiritually dull.

"When the Holy Spirit descended upon them, you hear people saying, how are these people? These people are not even learned...It is because most believers don't understand that when you come to dealing when it comes to dealing with God, you are dealing with a spiritual being."

Understanding Above All Else

  • The spirit of understanding is more important than the spirit of wisdom, the spirit of knowledge, or any other gift; no matter what vision you have seen, how many hours you have studied the Word, or how many times you have fasted, without understanding, everything was useless.
  • When the spirit of understanding is absent, all your spiritual works—visions, study, prayer, fasting—only make you think you are smart when spiritually you are foolish; you may win a theological argument but you will lose a divine argument.
  • The entrance of God's word gives light and understanding; therefore, any word from God that does not illuminate and clarify is incomplete, and you are incomplete in receiving it.

"It doesn't matter how many visions you have seen. It doesn't matter how many hours you have put in studying the Word of God. It doesn't matter how many times you have fasted. If the spirit of understanding is absent, everything you did was of no use."

What Makes a True Teacher

  • A true teacher is not someone who has studied extensively but someone with the innate ability to bring a student from ignorance or immaturity into maturity—the teacher's understanding navigates the student into wisdom.
  • Every student has a different capacity of understanding, and a true teacher understands this and adapts their approach; to use one blueprint for all students creates failure for those whose minds work differently.
  • The belief that some children are foolish is false—foolishness is rare; what is common is a teacher who has not learned how to tap into each student's particular understanding and elevate them to higher comprehension.

"It's an innate ability to communicate something to somebody and bring them to a level of understanding, bringing them from a place of ignorance or a place of immaturity into a place of maturity."

The True Measure of Ministry Impact

  • The greatest compliment is not personal acclaim for preaching ability but the testimony that someone's love for Jesus has increased, their desire to read God's Word has grown, and they now pursue knowing the Lord more intimately.
  • God always uses a messenger to transmit His message because pursuing God's Word alone on your own does not make you a teacher, and it does not qualify you to judge those who have been teaching while you are still learning.
  • Growth in understanding is continuous and progressive, never complete; what you understand about the Lord Jesus today will change tomorrow, and when you have encounters with God, you realize everything you thought you knew was actually nothing.

"My greatest compliment or what moves me is when people say you know I used to be here with Jesus. Now I am here. I am so much more in love with the Lord Jesus."

Knowledge Without Understanding: The Tree of Knowledge

  • The enemy found humanity's weakness in the desire for knowledge; the tree of knowledge of good and evil—not evil knowledge itself—destroyed the world, but there was also the tree of life in the center of the garden, which Adam and Eve never ate from.
  • Adam and Eve had zero understanding of the tree of life, so they did not value it; there are things and people you look down on right now because you have no understanding, and there are things you ignore because you do not comprehend their value.
  • Many believers reject fasting, prayer, giving, and spiritual disciplines because there is an absence of understanding—they ask "why would I need to do that?" when the answer lies in comprehending the spiritual reality behind the practice.

"There are things and there are people you look down on right now because you have no understanding. There are things you ignore right now because you have no understanding."

The Tree of Life and Understanding Versus Fear

  • The tree of life became appealing to Adam and Eve only when they understood death—when knowledge entered, they feared death and sought escape, but they still had no understanding of what the tree of life actually produced.
  • Knowledge can make you act on things without understanding; knowledge can sound like understanding but it is not—it produces fear-based action rather than revelation-based obedience.
  • God does not want blind obedience from His children; He gives instructions wrapped in understanding because to command obedience without understanding is to send someone to fail.

"Because knowledge can make you act on things without understanding. Because knowledge can sound like understanding but it's not."

God's Nature in Instruction and Blessing

  • God does not give half packages; He does not give you a gift that needs to grow—you grow into the gift—and He never gives insufficient blessing; He gives more than enough because it is His nature.
  • Everything God gives you has a reason behind it, and that reason includes the understanding necessary to use it; when God speaks an instruction, the understanding follows naturally with it.
  • Spiritual understanding covers for knowledge that you could not physically acquire; God will give it to you spiritually—this is why men who were despised became extremely valuable once God placed His hand upon them.

"God does not want you to obey him without understanding. God doesn't give half packages. God doesn't give you a gift that needs to grow. You grow into the gift. It's the nature of God."

Blind Faith Is Foolish

  • Blind faith is the most foolish thing ever invented because God Himself said, "Don't let the blind lead the blind"—if two blind people lead each other, they will fall into a ditch.
  • Your word is a lamp unto my feet, meaning the Lord will give you clarity of where you are stepping into; those who are led by the Spirit are the sons of God, and not every leading from God will be spiritual—some will use physical things, but it takes spiritual understanding to recognize His hand.
  • God's name is El Roy—the God who sees—and He will give you signs and clarity, but others who are not spiritually awake will not see them; the sign is there, but you will perceive it because of your spiritual understanding.

"Blind faith is the most foolish thing that has ever been invented. Your word is a lamp and to my feet, meaning the Lord will give you clarity of where you are stepping into."

God's Individualized Approach to Each Believer

  • God knows how to reach everyone according to where they are; He does not expect all believers to grow at the same pace because He knows each person as an individual and knows exactly how to reach them.
  • Understanding exists in levels and dimensions, both naturally and spiritually; this is why one believer will see salt as demonic while another reads Scripture and sees God making covenants with salt—context and revelation matter.
  • God has ordained many methods and expressions throughout Scripture—baptism, anointing oil, water, blood covenants, cleansing rituals—because He meets people where they are and uses what resonates with their faith.

"God knows how to reach everyone according to where they are. Understanding is in levels and dimensions even spiritually."

Prophetic Acts and Spiritual Understanding

  • A prophetic act—such as going to water and saying "Father, as this water runs on me let everything of the past wash off me"—is not sinful; it is the exercise of faith through a physical action that carries spiritual meaning.
  • What makes a spiritual practice powerful is not the practice itself but the understanding behind it; eating crackers and grape juice to remember Christ's death means nothing unless you have spiritual understanding of what you are doing.
  • Different believers operate under different revelations; one person may use water in ministry while another uses anointing oil—both can be valid expressions of their revelation, and to condemn one in favor of another is to lack understanding.

"But if you did it also, it's not wrong. Prophetically going somewhere and let's say you're going to this sea or you're going to your shower and you say father as this water runs on me let everything of the past wash off me. You're not sinning. It's just a prophetic act."

The Blood of Jesus and Misunderstanding

  • Many believers misunderstand the function of the blood of Jesus and speak of "applying the blood" as though it were a magical formula, but the Bible never instructed this practice.
  • The blood of Jesus is already working; it is through the blood that you can call on the Lord and be heard—in the Old Testament, God did not pass over because of the blood on the door but because the blood marked you as His, and when God saw the mark, He passed over.
  • The devil is kicked out by anything that is of God, but that does not make every practice doctrine; understanding the true function of Christ's blood prevents confusion and false doctrines from taking root.

"The blood of Jesus is already working right now. That is why me and you can call on the Lord."

The Danger of Misguided Teaching and Exposure Ministry

  • There are people bound by "exposure ministry" who have abandoned the church and do not desire anything to do with God because they have been taught to distrust all leadership and figure out the faith by themselves.
  • The Bible says "do not forsake the gathering of the saints" and God gave the fivefold ministry so that believers can be anchored and perfected unto His coming; teaching people to abandon this is teaching them to walk alone.
  • More people are fearful because they cannot rely on the Holy Spirit to lead them and instead demand their own natural understanding; even the Lord Jesus needed the Spirit of understanding.

"More people are now fearful because they cannot rely on the Holy Spirit to lead them. They need their own understanding, even the Lord Jesus needed the Spirit of understanding."

The Seven Spirits of God

  • Isaiah 11:2 reveals the seven spirits of God: the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge, and the Spirit of the fear of the Lord.
  • Before anyone is born again, the Spirit of the Lord is already upon them convicting of sin; by the Spirit of the Lord you call God "Father" and Jesus "Lord"—most believers do not understand that the Holy Spirit's work begins before conversion.
  • Just because you have the Spirit of Might (Power) does not mean you have the Spirit of wisdom; just because you have the Spirit of wisdom does not mean you have the Spirit of understanding; each of the seven spirits is distinct, and you may possess some without possessing all.

"The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding. The spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord."

The Spirit of the Fear of God

  • The fear of God is a spirit, not knowledge or intellectual understanding—it is not the fear of hell but the deep desire to please God and never disappoint Him, to never let Him down.
  • When you think of God and look to God with revelation (apocalypse)—seeing Him as He truly is—a desire arises to honor Him continually; this is the spirit of the fear of God, and it is distinct from natural fear or knowledge.
  • People who argue about which doctrines are true while teaching others to investigate for themselves often have no understanding themselves and have made people bound rather than free.

"That desire to please him continually is the spirit of the fear of God. Not the fear of hell, the fear of God is a spirit. It's not based on knowledge, it's a spirit."

The Spirit of Understanding Versus Mere Study

  • The spirit of understanding in the church has been reduced to studying the Bible, but study produces knowledge, not spiritual understanding; people who boast of studying the Word without the Holy Spirit do not have power.
  • Just because you are born again and filled with the Holy Spirit does not mean you automatically possess all seven spirits of God; you must ask, seek, and pray for each distinct anointing.
  • Those who complain about witchcraft, sorcery, and the works of darkness often lack spiritual understanding; yet understanding—even perverted, outdated, useless understanding inherited from spiritual beings cut off from God—still carries more power than ignorance.

"The spirit of understanding in the church has been reduced to studying. You will get someone understanding, but you will not get spiritual understanding."

Seeking Understanding Through Prayer and Patience

  • Daniel received a vision from God but did not understand it, so he remained in God's presence fasting and praying, refusing to move until God gave him understanding through the angel Gabriel.
  • Most people miss what God has for them because they do not wait on God to give them understanding—they are too much in a rush and do not recognize that understanding requires patience in God's presence.
  • When you read Scripture, hear preaching, or receive a revelation and do not grasp it, that is an absence of understanding; in that moment, you should pray the more, not assume you have received everything.

"Most people miss what God has for them because you don't wait on God to give you what and the standing. You are too much in a rush."

Seeing, Discerning, and Understanding

  • You look with your eyes, you see with your heart, and you understand with your heart—these are three distinct actions, and just because you see with your heart does not mean you understand with your heart.
  • When angels ask "what do you see?" and you respond, God may say "you have seen correctly," implying that one can see incorrectly—seeing requires understanding to see rightly.
  • Seeking knowledge and seeking understanding are different prayers; if you understand what God wants you to have, you will spend more time asking God for understanding so that you can maximize what you know.

"You look with your eyes, you see with your heart and you understand with your heart. Just because I see with my heart doesn't mean I understood with my heart."

The Limits of Practical Application to Spiritual Things

  • Spiritual things do not make practical sense; there is no practicality to spirituality—the moment you try to make something spiritual practical, you usually lose people and they say you are crazy.
  • A natural mind cannot receive the things of the Spirit because they are spiritually discerned; if you dilute a spiritual understanding to make it practical, it does not become easier to understand because it is still a spiritual thing.
  • You cannot teach the ways of God in purely practical terms because His nature transcends practical logic; this is why faith is required and why the carnal mind judges spiritual things as foolishness.

"There is no practicality to spirituality. Spirituality is spirituality."

Knowledge Versus Understanding in Parenting and Instruction

  • When you teach children, you teach them knowledge of good and bad—"stranger danger," "this is not good because..."—but true instruction includes understanding of the why behind the rule.
  • Teaching a child that guns are dangerous in the wrong hands but tools of defense in righteous hands gives them understanding; they then neither fear nor abuse the thing, but respect and use it rightly.
  • God gives instruction with understanding attached; when you understand the why behind obedience, you do not follow rules out of fear but out of comprehension and voluntary alignment with God's wisdom.

"In the hands of a righteous man, they become a tool of defense, they become a tool of protection. With the wrong intent, they become dangerous."

God's Understanding Surpasses Human Understanding

  • God does not think as humans think and His ways are not human ways; He is the originator of all understanding, so His understanding is not bound by yours, but your understanding must be bound to His.
  • God ordains everything with a certain understanding built into it because He is the author of all things; you cannot control God or bind Him to your understanding, but you must align your understanding with His.
  • The Bible is full of mysteries that God has ordained, and those who say there is no deep knowledge in Scripture reveal that they do not think—the infinite God has infinite knowledge woven throughout His Word.

"God is not bound by our understanding, but we have to be bound to He's understanding."

The Importance of Understanding in Faith and Prayer

  • You struggle with faith because you have no understanding of faith; you struggle with prayer because you have no understanding of prayer—understanding is foundational to practicing what you believe.
  • If you truly understood what prayer is—your lifeline, your medium of exchange with God—you would spend more time in prayer; when prayer becomes a chore, you have lost the spirit of understanding.
  • When you cannot sacrifice time for fasting and prayer, there is a deficiency in understanding; when you hear preaching or have a revelation and do not grasp it, the absence of understanding should drive you to pray more, not less.

"If you understood what prayer was or what prayer is, you will be spending more time in prayer because there is an understanding that prayer is your lifeline."

The Covenant of Salt and Lost Understanding

  • When Jesus said "you are the salt of the earth," the Jewish people understood He was referencing the covenant of salt—the covenant that secured Israel from David unto his descendants; salt is a sign of permanence and covenant.
  • If salt loses its flavor (its essential nature), it is of no use; when you lose the understanding of what placed you in your position and called you to your purpose, you are of no use and fit only to be cast out.
  • Most believers do not understand the historic context of Scripture, and more critically, they do not understand the spiritual context; without both, the fullness of God's Word is hidden.

"When Jesus was saying you are the salt of the earth...If the salt loses its flavor, then it's of no use. When you lose the understanding of what put you in the place you're in, then you're not of any use."

Everything Has an Expiration Date

  • To everything under the sun there is a time and a season; anything that manifests in the physical has an expiration date, and some problems you do not need to pray about—you only need to outlast them.
  • Because believers do not know that their situations have expiration dates, they believe their circumstances are permanent and eternal, and they live in defeat rather than in the patience of faith.
  • Understanding that God has ordained seasons and limits to all things brings peace and hope to the believer who faces trials.

"To everything under the sun, there is a time and a season. Meaning anything that manifests in the physical has an expiration date."

Key Definitions

Spirit of Understanding — The breath of God that makes hidden things clear; the capacity to comprehend spiritual truth and discern God's purposes; the ability to look beyond the natural and perceive divine reality and meaning.

Natural Understanding — Understanding that comes through study, education, intellect, and natural intelligence; it may make you sound smart but leaves you spiritually foolish without the Spirit of understanding.

Spiritual Understanding — Understanding that comes through encounter with God, the Holy Spirit, and revelation; it opens hidden mysteries and transforms the believer's relationship with God and perception of truth.

Knowledge — Information, facts, and what is known; the tree of knowledge of good and evil represents knowledge separated from understanding, which destroys because it shows you right and wrong but gives you no wisdom on how to live.

True Teacher — Not someone who has studied extensively but someone with the innate ability to bring a student from ignorance into maturity by understanding how that particular student learns and navigating them into wisdom.

Blind Faith — Faith without understanding, without clarity, without the light of God's Word illuminating the path; it is foolish because it leads people into ditches and defeats rather than into God's purposes.

Prophetic Act — A physical action done with spiritual intention and understanding behind it; the action carries meaning because of the spiritual revelation attached to it, not because of the practice itself.

Key Takeaways

  • The Spirit of Understanding Is Foundational — Without it, knowledge, visions, prayer, study, and fasting produce nothing but spiritual dullness; understanding is more important than any other gift or experience.

  • Natural and Spiritual Understanding Are Completely Different — You can be educated, intelligent, and learned yet remain spiritually blind; the apostles transformed the world without formal training because they operated in spiritual understanding.

  • God Always Provides Understanding With Instruction — When God speaks, understanding follows; He does not demand blind obedience, and His nature is to give complete packages, not incomplete gifts.

  • Every Individual Has Different Capacity and Learning — A true teacher understands this and adapts; no two people progress at the same rate, and there is no such thing as foolish people—only people whose particular understanding has not yet been tapped.

  • Knowledge Without Understanding Destroys — Adam and Eve had knowledge of good and evil but no understanding of the tree of life; this is why people reject what they do not comprehend and act on fear instead of revelation.

  • The Seven Spirits of God Are Distinct Anointings — Possessing one does not guarantee possession of another; you may have the Spirit of knowledge without the Spirit of understanding, or the Spirit of wisdom without the Spirit of the fear of God.

  • Absence of Understanding Creates Miscommunication With God — When you do not understand what God is saying, you misinterpret His direction, miss His purposes, and fail to obey; understanding is the bridge between God's word and human action.

Reflection Questions

  1. In which area of your spiritual life do you sense the greatest lack of understanding—prayer, God's Word, obedience to His voice, or your purpose—and what would change if you truly grasped it?

  2. What knowledge have you been holding without understanding, and what would it look like to go deeper and ask God to give you spiritual comprehension rather than just information?

  3. Which teaching about the seven spirits of God challenged you most, and have you actually prayed to receive each one, or have you assumed that being filled with the Holy Spirit means you automatically possess all of them?

  4. How have you responded when someone in leadership taught something that later changed or when you realized you misunderstood something you thought you knew—did you judge them, or did you recognize that understanding is progressive?

  5. When was the last time you waited in God's presence (like Daniel) asking for understanding rather than rushing ahead with your own natural comprehension, and what would it cost you to make that a regular practice?
