What Happens at Death: Understanding the Three Bodies, the Intermediate State, and the Soul's Journey
What Happens at Death Revealed: Understanding the Three Bodies, the Intermediate State, and the Soul's Journey
Your earthly life is not your destination — it is your preparation for the world that awaits on the other side.
Death is the most certain event in every human life, yet it remains the most misunderstood. Scripture reveals that man is a three-part being — body, soul, and spirit — each existing in a distinct realm, each subject to different laws of life and death. Understanding what happens when the body expires is not morbid curiosity; it is essential spiritual preparation.
Teaching Overview
- Earthly life is preparation for the spiritual world — your destiny is not in this physical realm.
- Man consists of three bodies — body, soul, and spirit — each existing in a distinct realm and subject to different realities.
- The soul is the seat of consciousness and experienced reality; it is the only part of man that matures.
- There are four categories of death — ordained, premature, artificial, and self-inflicted — only one of which God has appointed.
- When souls depart this world, they enter the intermediate state, where their reception is determined by their spiritual maturity.
- Heaven's fire is a purifying fire, not a tormenting fire — moral goodness alone does not prepare a soul for that environment.
Key Distinctions
| Body | Soul | Spirit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | The physical, earthly vessel of man | The seat of consciousness, reality, and self-awareness | The God-breathed life force in man |
| Where it exists | The physical, earthly realm | The spiritual plane — below where the spirit dwells | In God — it belongs to and came from Him |
| What it does | Grows and decays | Matures and experiences reality | Gives life |
| Can it die? | Yes — it returns to dust | Yes — it can die spiritually | No — it returns to God who gave it |
| What happens at physical death | Returns to the earth (dust) | Crosses into the intermediate state | Returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7) |
| Remedy or salvation | Death and resurrection | Spiritual maturity through knowing God's truth | None needed — it is already God's |
| Growth | Maturity | |
|---|---|---|
| What it describes | The physical development of the body and brain | The development of the soul and consciousness |
| Where it occurs | In the body and the brain | In the soul alone |
| How it happens | Biological and neurological processes | Through spiritual experience, truth, and soul development |
| What it produces | A physically developed person | A person with social awareness, wisdom, and spiritual readiness |
| Can one exist without the other? | Yes — the body can be fully grown while the soul remains immature | Yes — soul maturity does not depend on physical age |
| Truth | Personal Experience | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The singular, absolute reality that proceeds from God | What an individual has gone through or perceived |
| How many exist | Only one | As many as there are people |
| What it does | Alters a person positively and permanently | Validates feelings but does not transform |
| Who defines it | God alone | The individual |
| Is it reliable? | Absolutely — it is the standard | Partially — it is real but not necessarily true |
| Formation | Creation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | To be shaped from something that already existed | To be made from nothing |
| Applied to the spirit | The spirit was formed — it pre-existed in God before entering the body | The body was created — made from the dust of the earth |
| Scriptural basis | Jeremiah 1:5 — "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee" | Genesis 2 — God formed man from the dust of the earth |

| Heaven's Fire | Hell's Fire | |
|---|---|---|
| What kind of fire it is | A purifying, consuming fire | A tormenting flame |
| Scriptural basis | God is a consuming fire; angels nearest to God are called "burning ones" (Hebrews 1:7) | Where the worm does not die and the flame is not quenched |
| Who can survive it | Only the pure — those refined by spiritual growth | Those whose impurity makes heaven's fire worse torment |
| What it does to the impure | Consumes them — more tormenting than hell itself | Torments but does not purify |
| What calling "fire" means spiritually | Invoking the presence of heaven — a purifying, authentic fire | A lesser, tormenting imitation of the authentic fire |
| Spiritual Life | Moral Life | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Life lived in growing knowledge of God and spiritual truth | Life governed by an upright moral compass |
| Who can have it | Only those born again and growing in the Spirit | Anyone — including those who have never heard the Gospel |
| Does it lead to heaven? | Yes — it is the path | No — moral goodness alone cannot qualify a soul for heaven |
| What it produces | Soul maturity, spiritual readiness, eternal life | Good citizenship, human decency — commendable but insufficient |
| Primary realm | Spiritual | Physical and social |
The Purpose of Earthly Life
- Earthly life is not the destination — it is a preparation for the world of spirits and the spiritual realm.
- Anyone who does not consider their death or departure is, by scriptural wisdom, unwise — wisdom acknowledges that there is a time to be born and a time to die.
- Failing to comprehend the nature of the afterlife and the spiritual world places a believer in genuine spiritual danger.
"Your life on earth is to prepare you for the world of spirits or to enter the spiritual world. Your destiny is not in this physical world."
The Three Bodies of Man
- Man has three lives — the life of the body, the life of the soul, and the life of the spirit — and these three, though one, exist in three entirely different realms.
- The soul exists in the spiritual world but not on the same plane as the spirit; spiritual growth is the maturity of the soul, which is the process of the soul graduating to where the spirit already dwells.
- The soul is immaterial like the spirit but is not spirit — in the spiritual world, the spirit actually houses the soul.
"You have three lives, you have three lives: the life of the body, the life of the soul and the life of the spirit. These three bodies are one and the same, but they exist in three different realms."
The Soul as the Seat of Reality
- The ability to experience and validate reality is impossible without the soul — the reality of man is experienced through the soul.
- Because the soul builds reality from what it receives, it cannot distinguish between what is physically experienced and what is deeply meditated upon — whatever is meditated upon becomes reality to the soul.
- When a person isolates themselves and closes off from the world, they give the soul opportunity to construct its own reality — a dangerous illusion the soul then treats as genuine.
"Your soul's reality can also be altered if you don't have the right information. You can live in illusions and see it to be completely reality."
The One Truth and Its Power to Transform
- There is no such thing as "your truth" — personal experience is valid, but it is not the truth; there is only one truth and it comes from God.
- The need to always be right is rooted in a confusion between personal experience and truth — only the truth of God genuinely changes a person.
- The truth of God is the only thing that alters someone positively, not negatively — it is the only force capable of producing lasting transformation.
"There is only one truth and that truth comes from God. The truth of God is the only thing that alters somebody and alters them positively, not negatively."
The Soul Matures; the Body Only Grows
- The body grows, the brain develops, but neither matures — maturity belongs exclusively to the soul, where consciousness resides.
- It is possible for a person's body to be fully grown while their soul remains developmentally immature — the absence of social awareness and relational wisdom is a soul development deficiency, not a physical one.
- Spiritual growth, properly understood, is the maturation of the soul.
"Your body grows, but your soul matures. Your brain develops. It doesn't mature, it develops. Maturity is of the soul where your consciousness is."
The Three Forms of Death
- The body can die, the soul can die, but the spirit cannot die — because the spirit belongs to God, and God is Spirit.
- The spirit was not created but formed — it pre-existed in God before being placed in the body, and at death it returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
- Death, therefore, exists in only two realms: the death of the body and the death of the soul — the spirit is beyond the reach of death.
"Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the Spirit shall return unto God who gave it."
The Four Types of Death
- God has appointed only one death for the body — all other forms of death are the result of spiritual failure, carelessness, or enemy activity.
- Premature death comes before God's numbered days; artificial death is brought through witchcraft, resulting in a soul that becomes earthbound; self-inflicted death is when a person takes their own life.
- The body's days are already numbered — healthy living extends productivity, but it is carelessness or the completion of God's numbered days that ultimately ends physical life.
"The only death that God has ordained is one. The other ones are through your failure of being a lot spiritually in life."
The Intermediate State
- When souls leave this world, they enter the intermediate state — the border realm between the heavenly realm and the dark realms, a spiritual no man's land.
- Heaven is not within the spiritual world even though it is spiritual — what happens in heaven is unknown in the spiritual world, but when heaven releases something it passes through the spiritual world, through the intermediate state, and arrives on earth.
- If a soul dies with unfinished business, it does not rest — the inscription "Rest in Peace" on tombstones originated as an incantation directed at souls on the other side who were not at rest.
"When souls leave this world, when souls cross over, there is a place called the intermediate state. This is the border or the land between the realms of light and the depths of darkness."
How Souls Are Received at Death
- When souls depart this world, angels and the souls of family members who have already made it to heaven come to receive them — the spiritual maturity of the departing soul determines this reception.
- God allows loved ones to come because most people have never seen angels — the familiar presence of those who went ahead provides the soul with a transition into supernatural peace.
- The smile seen on the faces of certain believers at death is evidence of this reception — they are being met by those who have gone before them and by the angels of God.
"When souls leave this world, depending on your spiritual growth, angels will meet you and loved ones that are already in heaven — souls of your family members, your ancestors that made it home and angels will be bedside to receive you."
Sleeping With the Fathers: The Scriptural Meaning of Soul Rest
- When Scripture says a person "slept with his fathers," it means more than physical death — the word slept, when connected to another individual, carries the meaning of intimacy, of mingling with those on the other side.
- David slept with his fathers — he became intimate with those already in the realm of the righteous dead; Lazarus rested on Abraham's bosom, meaning he actually mingled with Abraham in paradise, not merely arrived in the same location.
- When Jesus said Lazarus was "sleeping" without reference to fathers, it indicated the intermediate state — a temporary rest from which he could be awakened; when the Bible says one "slept with his fathers," it signals permanent arrival and intimate communion with the departed righteous.
"When the Bible says you have slept with your fathers, you're not coming back. It means you have mingled with intimacy with those who are on the other side."
God's Blessings Are Already Established
- God is not deciding to bless a person in a given year — He has already given everything pertaining to life and godliness; what changes is the believer's reception of what already exists.
- Blessings are released based on spiritual maturity and the assignments a believer is carrying — they are not created in response to circumstances but received as the believer grows into readiness.
- What is established in heaven passes through the spiritual world and the intermediate state before arriving on earth — this is why what is decreed in heaven is already complete before it manifests in the physical.
"God is not deciding to bless you in 2024. You may receive the blessing in 2024, but God already gave you everything pertaining to life and godliness."
Spiritual Life vs. Moral Goodness
- Living a morally upright, honest, and commendable physical life is not the same as living a spiritual life — a good moral compass does not constitute spiritual growth.
- A person can be entirely moral — not stealing, not lying, not harming others — and still not be qualified for heaven, because moral goodness is the baseline of being a good human being, not the standard of eternal readiness.
- Life is primarily spiritual — it is the Spirit that gives life; therefore, spiritual growth through knowing God's truth is the only preparation that qualifies a soul for eternity.
"A lot of you live a physical life that is honest, that is commendable, that is upright and that is good, as it should be, but that is not spiritual life. Your moral compass is good, but your moral compass is not your spiritual life."
Heaven's Fire and Hell's Fire
- Heaven is hotter than hell — God is a consuming fire, and the angels nearest to Him are called "burning ones"; the fire of heaven is a purifying fire, not a tormenting one.
- Only the pure can survive the environment of heaven — the impure brought into heaven would be consumed by its fire more intensely than they would be tormented in hell, which is why hell is, for them, the more bearable state.
- When believers cry "fire" in worship, they are invoking the presence of heaven and calling down a purifying, authentic fire — it is not merely an expression but a genuine spiritual act.
"The fire of heaven is a purifying fire, meaning it is the authentic fire. The fire of hell is a tormenting fire."
Key Definitions
Soul — The immaterial seat of consciousness and experienced reality in man; the only part of man that matures, housed by the spirit in the spiritual world, and the realm through which all reality is processed and validated.
Spirit — The God-breathed life force in man that was formed, not created; it belongs to God, cannot die, and returns to God at physical death (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
Intermediate State — The border realm between the heavenly realm and the realms of darkness; the spiritual no man's land where souls cross over after death, a place of instruction and development for those of the light before they are released into the realm of light.
Maturity — The development of the soul in consciousness, wisdom, and spiritual readiness; distinct from physical growth (the body) or neurological development (the brain), which do not mature.
Artificial Death — Death brought about through witchcraft or occult means, in which a person is killed and their soul becomes earthbound — the body may be buried while the soul remains trapped and even used in another form.
Consuming Fire — The authentic, purifying fire of heaven associated with God Himself and the angelic beings closest to Him; distinct from the tormenting flame of hell, it refines and purifies the pure but consumes the impure.
Sleeping with the Fathers — The biblical expression indicating that a person has not merely died but has crossed over into intimate communion with the righteous dead who preceded them — a permanent arrival in the realm of the departed righteous, as opposed to a temporary rest in the intermediate state.
Key Takeaways
- Earthly life is preparation, not destination — every day lived without consciousness of the spiritual world and the afterlife is a day of spiritual negligence, not wisdom.
- The soul is the only part of man that matures — physical age and brain development are not indicators of spiritual readiness; only intentional soul growth through God's truth constitutes true maturity.
- There is only one truth, and it comes from God — personal experience is real but it is not truth; only the truth of God has the power to alter a person positively and permanently.
- God has appointed only one death — all others are preventable — premature, artificial, and self-inflicted death are not God's will; spiritual vigilance is the protection against all three.
- Moral goodness is not spiritual life — being upright, honest, and kind is the baseline of human decency; it does not qualify a soul for heaven or constitute the spiritual growth God requires.
- Heaven's fire is not a comfort to the impure — spiritual purification must happen in this life through growing in God; those who arrive at heaven's consuming fire unprepared face a torment worse than hell itself.
Reflection Questions
- If your soul experienced reality at death exactly as it is right now — shaped by what you have been meditating on and feeding it — would it be prepared to cross into the realm of light, or would it be trapped in an illusion it has built for itself?
- Are you living a moral life or a spiritual life — and do you know the difference in your own daily choices, habits, and pursuit of God?
- What "truth" have you been holding onto that is actually your experience rather than the truth of God — and how has that affected your perception of God, yourself, or others?
- Given that God has already established every blessing pertaining to your life and godliness, what area of soul maturity do you believe is currently delaying your reception of what He has already ordained?
- If you were to die tonight, based on your current spiritual growth — not your moral goodness — are you confident that angels and loved ones would be bedside to receive you? What would need to change?
Prayers and Declarations
Opening Prayer
"Father, I pray in the name of your son Jesus. Father, I thank you for the grace you have given us to be in your presence. Indeed, your merciful God and your loving God, your God full of compassion and full of love. We are completely undeserving according to our righteousness to receive anything from you. But out of your great love you have qualified us and you have made us deserving of your grace, your mercy and your love and all the amazing things that you have ordained for us. Father, I pray as we receive this truth that proceeds from your spirit that truly our eyes will be enlightened and our heart will be opened to see and to understand that we may follow after you and we may become all that you have destined for us to be. My Lord and my God glorify yourself even now in the mighty name of your Holy Son and your only Son Jesus Christ."
