Battles in Heavenly Places: Spiritual Ranking, Demonic Networks, and the Authority of the Believer

Battles in Heavenly Places: Spiritual Ranking, Demonic Networks, and the Authority of the Believer

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 7 August 2022

The reason many prayers go unanswered is not that God has withheld the answer, but that the believer has never won the battle in the atmospheric realm above them.

Believers have been raised up and seated with Christ Jesus in heavenly places — but most have never understood what that means or how to function from that position. Heavenly places is not heaven. It is the spiritual dimension through which God's will is enforced on the earth, and it is contested territory. Until a believer takes their seat of authority above principalities and powers, demonic networks will continue to block what God has already released.

Teaching Overview

  1. Heavenly places is a distinct spiritual dimension — not heaven — where believers are seated with Christ and from which the will of God is to be enforced.
  2. Spiritual ranking is determined by grace, not anointing — believers can increase in grace but not in anointing.
  3. Demons operate primarily from two territories: the waters and the atmospheric heavens — and whoever controls these controls the earth.
  4. Unanswered prayers are often not God's delay but the result of demonic resistance in heavenly places blocking the delivery of what God has already answered.
  5. Believers must understand spiritual protocols — including the distinction between messenger angels and warrior angels — to effectively break through in prayer.

Key Distinctions

RebellionDisobedience
What it isA fallen nature present in every human beingA spiritual influence operating through demonic control
OriginInherited through the fall of manEntered through openness to the spirit of the air
Who it applies toAll humanity by natureThose under the influence of the prince of the power of the air
ExampleA child refusing instruction without being taught to refuseA person unable to do what is good for them even when they want to
Spiritual parallelNatural — no tempter requiredWitchcraft and idolatry — "disobedience is as idolatry"
Satan's caseSatan did not rebel — he had no tempter, no fallen natureSatan disobeyed — which is why God has never been merciful to him
AnointingGrace
What it isThe vehicle — the divine empowerment that sets you apartThe fuel that pushes the anointing into places it has never been
How it worksA one-time impartationA continuous, increasing supply
Can it grow?No — anointing does not increaseYes — believers are called to grow in grace
FunctionSets you apart and gives you accessDetermines how far and how fully the anointing can operate
Scriptural instructionNever commanded to "grow in anointing""Grow in grace" — 2 Peter 3:18
HeavenHeavenly Places
What it isThe eternal dwelling place of God, where the Father is enthronedDimensions in the spiritual realm outside of heaven through which God's will is carried out
Who operates thereCherubim, Seraphim — angelic beings whose domain is within the realms of lightAngels assigned to execute God's mandate in the earth realm; also contested by fallen principalities
Can it be corrupted? No — those operating in realms of light cannot be deceived or pulled downYes — Satan took a third of the stars who operated in heavenly places, not in heaven itself
Believers' positionEternal destinationPresent spiritual seating — believers are raised up and seated here with Christ now
Gabriel (Messenger Angel)Michael (Warrior Angel)
Primary functionDelivers messages, direction, and answers from GodShatters the work of the enemy and breaks spiritual resistance
What he does when he arrivesSpeaks — delivers the word God sentFights — he does not come to talk
Limitation in warfareCannot fight his way through resistance — like a mailman who is not a bodyguardDispatched specifically to clear spiritual blockages so messengers and answers can come through
Example in ScriptureHeld back 21 days by the prince of Persia while carrying Daniel's answerCame to help Gabriel break through the prince of Persia's resistance
Cherubim / SeraphimAngels of Heavenly Places
DomainHeaven — within the realms of light, at the throne of GodOutside of heaven — operating in the atmospheric and spiritual realms of the earth
Can they fall?No — those in the realms of light cannot be deceived or pulled downYes — a third were taken by Satan when he fell, because they operated in the contested realm
FunctionWorship and heavenly administration around God's throneCarry out the mandates of God in the earthly and atmospheric realm
SonChild
Biblical distinction"To us a Son is given" — the Son is divine, pre-existing, and the heir of all things"To us a Child is born" — a child is born into time, into human circumstance
Who determines itGod gives the Son — the Son's nature is eternalAnyone can give birth to a child
Application to JesusThe Son of God is divine — eternal, sharing glory with the Father before creationThe human part of Jesus was born, grew, suffered, and represented humanity as High Priest

Heavenly Places Is Not Heaven

  • Heavenly places is a distinct spiritual dimension — separate from heaven — where believers are called to move, breathe, and work the works of God.
  • Jesus ascended far above all heavens, above principalities and powers — these are angelic hierarchies, not exclusively demonic entities.
  • Not all principalities and powers have fallen — cherubim and seraphim operate from within heaven and cannot be deceived or pulled down; it was the angels operating outside of heaven in heavenly places that Satan captured.

"Heavenly places is not heaven. Heavenly places is dimensions in the spiritual realms that children of God ought to be moving, breathing, working the works of God from those places."

The Divine Nature of the Son and the Position of the Believer

  • The Bible distinguishes between "a child is born" and "a son is given" — the Son is divine, pre-existing, and the heir; a child is born into time.
  • Jesus, as the God-man, existed with the Father before creation in eternity — not in heavenly places — and prayed, "Glorify Me with the glory I shared with You before the world began."
  • The human part of the Lord Jesus — glorified and raised from the dead as High Priest — is the one who has lifted believers into their spiritual ranking in heavenly places, because He represents humanity.

"Father, now honor me with the glory I shared with you before creation."

Spiritual Ranking and the Distinction Between Anointing and Grace

  • Spiritual ranking in heavenly places is not determined by the measure of anointing — anointing is a one-time impartation that does not increase.
  • It is grace that believers grow in — grace is the fuel that determines how far and how fully the anointing can operate.
  • The anointing is the vehicle; grace is the fuel — without growing in grace, the full capacity of the anointing can never be experienced.

"The anointing is the vehicle. The grace is the fuel to push that car into places that you've never been."

Two Territories of Demonic Contention

  • God gave man dominion over two specific territories before the ground: the fish of the sea and the fowl of the air — capturing the waters and the heavens as the critical zones of authority.
  • The firmament divides the waters below from the waters above — and God named the firmament "heaven" — meaning the seas and the skies are spiritually linked territories.
  • Demons love these two locations because they are connected — the spirits that cannot operate from the air move to operate from the waters, and whoever controls the water controls the land.

"Demons love two locations because they are twins, they are connected. The waters and the heavens. Whoever controls the water can control the land. And whoever can control the air can control everything in the earth."

Satan's Authority and Adam's Loss

  • Before the fall, Satan operated only on the ground, in total submission to Adam — he had no access to the air or the waters, and his only tool was his mouth.
  • When Adam and Eve were deceived, man lost his place in heavenly places and in the waters — and spirits began operating from the air.
  • Satan was able to show Jesus all the kingdoms of the world from a high place because controlling heavenly places gives visibility and dominion over earthly kingdoms — authority that was transferred to him when Adam fell.

"When Adam lost his place in the garden, he also lost his place in heavenly places, in waters."

Unanswered Prayers and the Battle in the Atmospheric Realm

  • Many believers have not received the answers to their prayers — not because God has not answered, but because they have never won the battle in the Spirit or controlled the heavenly places over their lives.
  • The story of Daniel demonstrates that God released the answer on the first day Daniel prayed — but the angel carrying it was held back for twenty-one days by the prince of the kingdom of Persia.
  • There are messenger angels and warrior angels — a messenger angel will not fight through resistance; if blocked, he waits, because delivering the message is his function, not breaking through warfare.

"Many of you have not received the answers to your prayers, not because God has not given you an answer, not because God has not released that miracle, but because of one simple thing, you never won the battle in the Spirit."

Spiritual Protocols: Gabriel and Michael

  • Gabriel came to Daniel not to fight but to deliver the answer God had already sent — his role is equivalent to a mailman; he is not dispatched to handle security.
  • Michael is a warrior — when he appears, he does not come to speak or deliver messages; he comes to shatter the works of the enemy and clear the atmospheric resistance.
  • Not understanding these protocols causes believers to wait decades for breakthroughs that are already prepared — the delay is not God's unwillingness but spiritual blockage in heavenly places.

"If you don't understand the protocols of the Spirit, you'll be waiting for a breakthrough for 20 years. Yet your angel is just held back."

Spiritual Atmosphere and Family Destiny

  • When spiritually governing individuals in a family — intercessors, praying grandmothers, men and women of God — pass on without anyone rising to take their place, the shield and sword of the family leaves.
  • Joseph's presence in Egypt meant the will of God was happening in Egypt — because he controlled the spiritual atmosphere of that nation; when he died and no one rose like him, foreign spirits filled the vacuum.
  • God raises up believers today to become the spiritual pillar of their family — the one who controls the atmospheric realm so that the family is not left in bondage.

"The reason why you are watching me right now is because God has chosen you to be the pillar of the family. If there's no one controlling the spiritual atmosphere, then the family remains in bondage."

Rebellion, Disobedience, and Demonic Influence

  • Rebellion is the fallen nature — no one has to be taught to rebel; it is inherited and present in every human being.
  • Disobedience is spiritual — it is the influence of the spirit of the air operating in a person, preventing them from doing what they know is right even when they want to.
  • Samuel's declaration that "disobedience is as witchcraft" is not metaphorical — it reflects that disobedience operates through the same spiritual mechanism as idolatry and sorcery.

"Disobedience is spiritual. Rebellion is the fallen nature. Disobedience is a spiritual influence."

Key Definitions

Heavenly Places — Not heaven; the spiritual dimensions outside of heaven where believers are seated with Christ and where demonic principalities contest God's will over the earth.

Anointing — A one-time divine impartation that sets a person apart and gives them access to grace; it does not increase, but it can be more fully used as grace increases.

Grace — The continuous, growing empowerment of God that fuels the anointing and determines how far and how fully a believer can function in what God has given them.

Rebellion — The inherited fallen nature present in every human being — the instinct to refuse; no one has to be taught it, it is natural.

Disobedience — A spiritual condition, not a natural one — the inability to do what is right even when one wants to, caused by demonic influence operating through the prince of the power of the air.

Son (vs. Child) — In the distinction "a child is born, a Son is given," the Son refers to the divine, pre-existing, eternal nature — the one who inherits; a child refers to that which enters through birth into time and human circumstance.

Key Takeaways

  • Heavenly places is the contested spiritual dimension where the will of God is enforced — not heaven itself. Understanding this distinction is foundational to effective spiritual warfare, because it defines the territory in which believers must exercise authority.
  • Spiritual ranking is determined by grace, not anointing — and grace can be grown. This means every believer has the capacity to increase their spiritual effectiveness, not by seeking more anointing, but by growing in the grace already made available through Christ.
  • Demonic networks operate from the waters and the air to block what God has released. Recognising that unanswered prayer is often a warfare problem — not a faith problem or a divine timing problem — changes how a believer approaches intercession entirely.
  • Messenger angels and warrior angels serve completely different functions — and not knowing the difference costs breakthrough. Daniel's twenty-one-day delay was not God's delay; it was an atmospheric blockage that required a warrior to clear before the answer could be received.
  • God raises up one person in each family to be the spiritual pillar — and that person must understand their assignment. When no one takes the place of the intercessors who have gone before, the spiritual atmosphere over a family remains uncontrolled and the family suffers the consequences.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are there prayers you have been presenting to God for months or years — and if so, have you ever approached the delay as a spiritual warfare problem rather than a waiting-on-God problem? What would change in how you pray?
  2. In your understanding of your own spiritual life, have you been growing in grace — or have you assumed that more anointing is what you need? What does your pattern of spiritual development actually reveal?
  3. Is there someone in your family or community who once held the spiritual atmosphere through intercession and is no longer there? Are you taking that place — or has the vacuum been left unfilled?
  4. Which is harder for you personally to overcome — rebellion (the natural impulse to refuse God's direction) or disobedience (the spiritual inability to follow through even when you want to)? What does your honest answer reveal about what needs to be addressed in your life?
  5. Do you understand your spiritual ranking — where you are seated in heavenly places — and are you functioning from that seat, or are you praying from a position below the very principalities you are called to be above?
