Binah: The Foundation of Discernment and the Gift of Spiritual Understanding

Binah: The Foundation of Discernment and the Gift of Spiritual Understanding

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 15 February 2026

Without understanding, every gift, prayer, and spiritual discipline you carry remains incomplete.

Understanding is not simply knowing — it is the foundational spiritual capacity upon which all wisdom and knowledge must rest. The Hebrew word binah — translated as understanding and discernment — is not acquired through education, fasting, or prayer alone. It is a divine gift that must be sought, and without it, no believer can walk with God effectively or multiply what He has placed within them.

Teaching Overview

  1. Understanding (binah) is the foundational gift upon which wisdom and knowledge are built — without it, a believer cannot walk effectively with God.
  2. The sevenfold Spirits of God are the measure of spiritual maturity, and a mature believer must have all seven manifested, not just one or two.
  3. Knowledge without understanding renders every spiritual gift, prayer, and fast incomplete and incapable of producing its full result.
  4. Human wisdom, human knowledge, and human understanding are distinct from — and inferior to — their spiritual counterparts.
  5. Soul prosperity, not material wealth, is God's primary investment in the believer; when the soul prospers, everything else follows.

Key Distinctions

Human Knowledge / Wisdom / UnderstandingSpiritual Knowledge / Wisdom / Understanding
SourceStudy, education, intellectual accumulationImparted by the Spirit of God
How it is gainedSchools, books, human experienceRecognising your lack and seeking God for it
What it producesExpertise in Scripture or theologyAbility to walk with God, discern His will, and operate in gifts effectively
Relation to ministryCan make you an expert on ScriptureEnables you to actually do ministry and express the gifts God has given
LimitationCannot multiply spiritual gifts or make power workUnlocks the full expression and multiplication of every grace God has given
Biblical exampleThose who pray for hours but remain without discernmentSolomon, who asked for an understanding heart and received wisdom to govern all of God's people
Soul ProsperityMaterial Wealth
What it isThe prospering of your inner man — understanding, wisdom, spiritual fortificationFinancial and material accumulation
Biblical basis"May your soul prosper as everything else prospers"Secondary fruit of God's blessing
What it producesEternal purpose, fulfilment, and the multiplication of all other blessingsThings that quiet the flesh but cannot fulfil the soul
What happens without itEven the wealthy are poor — "you can buy everything and realise there's nothing else to buy"Vanity — wealth without soul prosperity leads to emptiness
God's priorityPrimary — God's greatest investment in you is in Christ Jesus within youSecondary — these things follow when the soul is properly rooted
Testing (God's Refining)Temptation (credited to the devil)
True sourceGod, using adversity to elevate and reveal what He placed inside youOften misattributed — "the devil is attacking me"
PurposeTo push you into your destiny, reveal God as Healer and DelivererNone — the devil has no constructive agenda
Biblical exampleJesus taken by the Spirit of God to be tempted — a divine plan, not a devil's victoryGiving the devil a "blank check" to do anything — absent of understanding
Correct response"My Father has a plan. This is between me and God and He is using him as my stepping stone"Stop crediting the devil for what God is trying to achieve through you
ResultYou emerge stronger — "all things work for your good, even the devil works for your good"Fear and defeat — praising the devil by crediting him with power he does not have
PowerUnderstanding
What it isThe spiritual capacity to act — cast out demons, perform miraclesThe knowledge of how to make power work, express it, and multiply it
Is it complete?Yes — "God has never given anyone a gift that is incomplete"Without it, a complete gift remains unexpressed and ineffective
Biblical exampleDisciples given power over serpents, scorpions, and all the powers of darknessSame disciples could not cast out a specific demon — "this kind comes out by prayer and fasting"
What Jesus correctedHe did not tell them they needed more powerHe revealed they lacked the understanding of how to express and extend the power they already had
Result of absenceGift operates at a low and seasonal rate — indistinguishable from those with no gift at all"If I have knowledge of what I have, it will separate me from everybody else"

The Sevenfold Spirits of God as the Measure of Spiritual Maturity

  • The Spirit of God manifests in sevenfold: the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, power, might, the Lord, counsel — seven in total.
  • The number seven is the number of completion; a matured believer has all sevenfold spirits manifested in them, not just one or two.
  • Without a metric to measure spiritual growth, believers do Christianity by feeling rather than by what God has revealed.

"A matured believer has the sevenfold spirits of God manifested in them. The problem with how we do Christianity is, we do it how we feel, we don't do it the way God has revealed it."

Understanding (Binah) as the Foundation of All Spiritual Operation

  • Understanding is the bed upon which wisdom and knowledge are laid — it is not one of three equal gifts but the foundation of the other two.
  • Spiritual understanding does not come through fasting, prayer, or education; it comes when a believer recognises they lack it and brings that acknowledgement before God.
  • Binah in Hebrew is also translated as discernment; when understanding, wisdom, and knowledge operate together, the full spirit of discernment is expressed.

"Understanding is the most important thing because understanding is the bed that wisdom and knowledge are laid upon. If a believer lacks understanding, that believer cannot walk with God effectively."

Knowledge Without Understanding Renders Every Spiritual Gift Incomplete

  • Grace and spiritual power are managed by understanding, not by the quantity of prayer or fasting a believer performs.
  • What God gives is always complete — the inability to multiply a gift comes not from incompleteness in the gift but from the absence of understanding of how to operate it.
  • A genuine gift without understanding operates at the same level as no gift at all; understanding is what separates and distinguishes the gifted from the ungifted.

"It's not about fasting and prayer. All those things are good. But without knowledge, it means absolutely nothing. It means nothing at all."

Human Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding Are Distinct from Their Spiritual Counterparts

  • There is a wisdom of this world and a celestial wisdom; they are not the same and cannot be obtained by the same means.
  • A person can become an expert on Scripture through study and still possess no spiritual understanding, spiritual wisdom, or spiritual knowledge.
  • The disciples in Scripture had no theology — they had an understanding of God, and all theological doctrine was built from their experience with Him.

"I can get the Bible, get a study Bible with references, and I can become an expert on scripture, but I will not become an expert on wisdom, on understanding and knowledge that is spiritual. They are not the same thing."

Solomon's Prayer and the Priority of the Principal Thing

  • When God asked Solomon what he desired, Solomon asked for an understanding heart to judge God's people and discern between good and bad — not wisdom, not wealth, and not power.
  • Solomon's fame for wisdom was the product of understanding; understanding produced the display of wisdom before all nations.
  • Because Solomon asked for the principal thing, God gave him everything else — understanding positions a believer to receive all secondary blessings as overflow.

"You think Solomon was famous for wisdom. Solomon was famous for the spirit of understanding. There is no situation you put before him that he could not decode. Understanding produced the display of wisdom. But what Solomon prayed for was not wisdom."

Soul Prosperity Over Material Wealth

  • God's greatest investment in a believer is in Christ Jesus within them — that investment can produce material things, but material things are not the centre of God's blessing.
  • The principle of Scripture is that soul prosperity precedes and governs all other forms of prosperity; money without soul prosperity leaves a person spiritually poor.
  • Works-based Christianity — believing God waits for you to be refined before blessing you — contradicts the doctrine of grace; it is God's goodness that leads people to repentance.

"If you have money in the bank but your soul has not prospered, you're still poor."

All Things Work for Your Good — Including the Adversary

  • The adversary is positioned by God to bring out what God has placed inside you; the enemy thinks he is fighting you, but God is using him to provoke your next dimension.
  • Crediting the devil for what God is achieving through trials is a product of the absence of understanding — it hands the enemy a power he does not possess.
  • The day a believer understands that everything is working for their good is the day they retire from praising the devil with their fear.

"The adversary is positioned to bring up the best in you. He thinks he is fighting with you, but God is using him to make you discover what he put inside of you."

Binah and the Ability to Discern Between Right and Wrong

  • The first function of binah is enlightenment — the capacity to perceive things as they truly are, without assumption, projection, or false interpretation.
  • The absence of binah in Eve's experience in the garden made her vulnerable to deception; the devil exploited her inability to distinguish what God truly said from what he suggested.
  • Assumption — deciding what is happening without true perception — is the opposite of binah and produces a distorted understanding of both God and people.

"Binah gives you the ability to know between right and wrong. The first thing that Binah does is it enlightens you to know between right and wrong, good and evil — it gives you the ability to perceive things as they are."

Jesus Is the Centre of All Things

  • When Jesus is not the centre, nothing can stand; when He is the centre, everything can be built upon Him.
  • The distinction between believers and everyone else is Jesus — without Him, there is no distinction, no significance, and no standing in God's sight.
  • Spiritual zeal must be continually strengthened toward the Lord Jesus so that everything a believer does carries significance in the sight of God.

"When Jesus is not the center, nothing can stand, but if Jesus is the center, everything can be built on Him. Never ever forget that."

Key Definitions

Binah — The Hebrew word for understanding, also translated as discernment; the foundational spiritual gift upon which wisdom and knowledge are laid, enabling a believer to perceive things as they truly are, discern between right and wrong, and walk with God effectively.

Spiritual Understanding — Distinct from human understanding; not obtained through education, fasting, or prayer alone, but imparted by God when a believer recognises their lack and seeks Him for it.

Soul Prosperity — The prospering of the inner man — understanding, wisdom, and spiritual fortification — from which all other forms of prosperity proceed; a person with wealth but without soul prosperity remains spiritually poor.

Sevenfold Spirits of God — The complete sevenfold manifestation of the Spirit of God: the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, power, might, the Lord, counsel, and a seventh — together they constitute the measure of spiritual maturity in a believer.

Celestial Wisdom — The wisdom of God, distinct from and superior to the wisdom of this world; it cannot be obtained through human study or intellect but is spoken to those who are spiritually mature.

Discernment (Spirit of Discernment) — The complete expression that arises when understanding, wisdom, and knowledge operate together; it goes beyond discerning God's will to identifying celestial creatures and their intent.

Key Takeaways

  • Understanding is the foundation, not a supplement — Every other spiritual gift, discipline, and grace rests on binah; without it, a believer cannot walk with God effectively or multiply what He has given them.
  • What God gives is always complete — understanding is what unlocks it — The problem is never an incomplete gift; it is the absence of understanding that prevents a believer from expressing and multiplying what God has already deposited.
  • Soul prosperity governs all other prosperity — God's primary investment in a believer is the inner man; when the soul prospers, all other dimensions of life follow in alignment.
  • The adversary is a tool of God's refinement, not a power to be feared — Crediting the devil for God's refining work betrays a lack of understanding; all things, including the enemy, are working for the believer's good.
  • Ask for the principal thing first — Solomon's prayer reveals that understanding is what unlocks everything else; believers who position their desire before God with the principal thing receive all secondary blessings as overflow.

Reflection Questions

  1. In your current season, are you pursuing soul prosperity — understanding, wisdom, and spiritual growth — or are you measuring God's blessing primarily by what is visible in your account and circumstances?
  2. What have you been crediting the devil for that may actually be God's refining work in your life — and what would change in your perspective if you truly believed all things were working for your good?
  3. When you pray, what are you asking God for first? Are you positioning your desire before God with the principal thing, or are you leading with secondary requests while the foundation remains unaddressed?
  4. Solomon asked for an understanding heart rather than wisdom, wealth, or power — and received everything. What does that reveal about the gap between what you are currently asking God for and what He most wants to give you?
  5. Where in your spiritual life have you been operating by feeling rather than by what God has revealed — and what would it look like to submit that area to the measure of the sevenfold Spirits of God?
