Discerning Your Spirit: Becoming a Burning Vessel Through Whom God's Kingdom Operates

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 20 October 2020

The true power of the believer is not found in external gifts or manifestations, but in the igniting of the spirit that is already one with God.

True deliverance is not merely the casting out of demons — it is the transformation of the mind and the awakening of the spirit within. Every born-again believer carries the Kingdom of God inside them, yet most are living disconnected from the spiritual reality that already defines them. The goal of this teaching is to bring every believer into genuine liberation by learning to discern, ignite, and operate from their own spirit.

Teaching Overview

  1. True deliverance requires mind transformation, not only the expulsion of demonic forces.
  2. The born-again believer is already one spirit with God, and discerning that union is the key to spiritual authority.
  3. The spirit of a man is a candle — it must be lit by the Holy Spirit to become a burning, functional vessel.
  4. Operating from the spiritual realm into the natural realm, rather than reacting to the natural, is the correct posture of the believer.
  5. Everything occurring in the natural realm is a delayed result of what has already taken place in the spiritual realm.

True Deliverance Is Internal, Not Only External

  • Casting out a demon is valid, but if the mind remains unchanged, the demon can return and cause greater destruction.
  • Real deliverance is the transformation of the mind through revelation — the revealing of what God has already placed within the believer.
  • Revelation is not a new philosophy or greater human knowledge; it is the mind and intention of God made known.

"True deliverance is not rolling on the ground even though that one is good too. When somebody has a demon casting them out, it's good. But the problem is this, a demon can leave you, but your mind has not changed."

The Believer Is Already One Spirit with God

  • According to 1 Corinthians 6:17, the one who is joined to the Lord is one spirit — this is not a pursuit but an existing reality for the born-again believer.
  • The reason believers do not know the Lord's thoughts, mind, and intent is not because they lack access, but because they have not discerned the spirit that is already one with Him.
  • A Christian should not pray for the Holy Spirit to fill them, but should pray for an awakening to what is already within them.

"Whenever you think you're feeling the Holy Spirit you're not feeling the Holy Spirit, it is your spirit. If you become one spirit with the Lord, you should know what the Lord is doing."

The New Creation Carries the Kingdom Within

  • The believer was born of Adam in both flesh and spirit, inheriting the sin nature; but Jesus, as the second Adam, produces a new spirit in the born-again believer now, and a new body at the Great Resurrection.
  • All things have passed away — the born-again believer is an entirely new creation who never existed before, yet lives in a body still belonging to Adam.
  • Jesus declares the Kingdom of God is within the believer — a kingdom being not heaven, but the extension of the sovereign King's reign into the person.

"The day you got born again, something was delivered in you. Something is already inside of you, that you don't know what it is."

The Spirit Is a Candle That Must Be Lit

  • Proverbs 20:27 declares the spirit of a man is the candle of the Lord — every believer is a candle, but a candle is not useful until it is lit.
  • At Pentecost, the rushing mighty wind was the Holy Spirit filling the room; the cloven tongues of fire that appeared on each believer's head were not the Holy Spirit but the side effect of the Holy Spirit touching and igniting their human spirits.
  • Being on fire for God is not zealousness — zeal can die, but when a believer has become fire, they become a natural being that burns.

"The fire was not the Holy Spirit. The fire was a side effect of the presence of the Spirit of God. The fire was the effect of the Holy Spirit touching their Spirit."

A Burning Spirit Is Torment to Demonic Forces

  • When the demon-possessed man of Mark 5 saw Jesus from afar, he ran and cried out, begging not to be tormented — not because Jesus spoke a command, but because the presence of a burning vessel is itself tormenting to darkness.
  • The ability to deliver people flows from a burning spirit: a believer whose spirit is lit does not need to shout or declare — their very presence consumes demonic forces.
  • God is a consuming fire, and His ministers are described in Psalm 104:4 as flames of fire — to be lukewarm is to contradict the very nature God intended for His people.

"The ability to deliver people is that their spirit is burning. Somebody that is consumed by God, somebody who is a burning fire, they are so caught up. Just your content will become the most tormenting thing that the devil has ever seen in his life."

A Gift Is Not the Same as Being Lit Up

  • A spiritual gift is given without the recipient working for it and does not confirm that the person's spirit is burning.
  • Being lit up is a constant pursuit of God — it is a cultivated state, not a received endowment.
  • The nature of the spirit of man is fire, which is why Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego could not be consumed in the furnace — the inner man's nature is fire.

"A gift doesn't mean that you're lit up because a gift comes without you working for it. But light up is a constant pursuit of God. The nature of the spirit of man is fire."

Spiritual Consciousness Must Precede Natural Consciousness

  • The soul consistently wars against the spirit, and because believers live in a material world, the soul already has a natural advantage.
  • Most believers operate from the physical realm trying to reach the spiritual realm, but the correct order is to operate from the spiritual realm, governing the natural realm from that position.
  • Spiritual things affect natural things — natural things do not affect spiritual things; therefore, whoever is naturally conscious before spiritually conscious is already operating at a loss.

"The soul resorts against the Spirit. You're supposed to operate from the spiritual realm into the natural realm. Spiritual things affect the natural things. The natural things don't affect spiritual things."

Everything Natural Is a Delayed Result of the Spiritual

  • Everything presently happening in a believer's natural life is a side effect — a delayed reaction — of what has already taken place in the spiritual realm.
  • Hardship, sickness, stagnancy, and relational failure are not random; they are indicators that a battle has already been lost in the spirit.
  • Jesus operated from this principle: He only did what He had already seen His Father do, meaning every action He took in the natural was the fulfilment of what had already occurred spiritually.

"Anything that is happening to you right now is a result of what already happened in the spirit. If you are experiencing hardship, you have already lost a battle in the spirit. Everything that is happening in the natural is an after effect. It's a delayed reaction."

The Conditions to Maintain the Fire

  • There are specific conditions required to maintain the fire — receiving prayer alone cannot sustain the burning; without understanding and applying these conditions, the fire can go out.
  • The greatest enemy of the burning spirit is not the devil but carnality — the pull of the soul toward the natural realm is the primary force that will extinguish the fire.
  • The burning believer whose spirit is illuminated has no time or appetite for gossip, division, or attacking fellow ministers — a lack of illumination is the root cause of those behaviours.

"There are conditions to maintain the fire. Your biggest challenge will not be the devil keeping you from burning, but it would be carnality that will fight you."

Key Definitions

Revelation — Not a new philosophy or revolution in human knowledge, but the mind and intention of God made known: that which already exists but has been hidden.

The Kingdom of God — The extension of the sovereign King's reign into a person or territory; distinct from heaven, it is the King's authority dwelling and operating within the believer.

Candle (spirit of man) — The human spirit as described in Proverbs 20:27 — a vessel capable of burning, but not inherently burning; it must be ignited by the Holy Spirit to be useful.

Being lit up — A state of constant, cultivated burning produced by ongoing pursuit of God; distinct from receiving a spiritual gift, it requires personal consecration and cannot be passively received.

Fire (at Pentecost) — The visible side effect of the Holy Spirit igniting the human spirits of the disciples; not the Holy Spirit Himself, but the manifestation of the candle of the human spirit being set alight.

Spiritual consciousness — The state of being awake and operative from within the spirit realm first, governing the natural realm from that position, rather than reacting to natural circumstances and trying to reach the spiritual from there.

Key Takeaways

  • True deliverance requires transformation of the mind, not only expulsion of demonic forces — a demon can leave, but without a renewed mind, the conditions for its return remain unchanged.
  • The born-again believer is already one spirit with God — the pursuit is not to obtain the Holy Spirit's presence but to awaken to and discern the union that already exists.
  • The spirit of every believer is a candle that must be lit — being born again places the candle within you, but only a constant pursuit of God keeps it burning.
  • Natural circumstances are delayed reactions to spiritual realities — whoever waits until hardship manifests naturally before responding spiritually is always fighting after the battle has already been decided.
  • A burning spirit is the most dismantling force against darkness — not declarations or formulas, but the sheer burning content of a lit-up believer is torment to demonic forces.

Reflection Questions

  1. Are you seeking something external from God — a word, a prayer, a manifestation — while remaining disconnected from the spirit that is already one with Him? What would change if you pursued awakening rather than addition?
  2. Is your fire a gift you received, or a burning you have cultivated? What evidence in your daily life shows whether your spirit is lit or dim?
  3. In which areas of your life are you reacting to natural circumstances rather than governing from the spiritual realm? What battle may already have been decided that you are still fighting from the wrong position?
  4. What carnal patterns — gossip, division, sight-based judgment, emotional reaction — are currently competing with the illumination of your spirit? What would you have to surrender for your fire to burn brighter?
  5. If the presence of a truly burning believer is torment to demonic forces without a single word being spoken, what does your current spiritual temperature say about how much of a threat you are to the kingdom of darkness?
