Discerning Your Spirit: The Foundation of All Spiritual Authority
Discerning Your Spirit · Part 1 of 2
Until you know your own spirit, you cannot know God's intent, discern deception, or walk in the authority He has designed for you.
Every human being carries within their spirit the map of their life — the truth of who they truly are and where they are going. Yet most believers navigate their entire lives without ever discerning this inner reality. Spiritual discernment does not begin with reading others or detecting demons — it begins with knowing your own spirit. Without this foundational self-knowledge, prayer becomes empty, gifts remain dormant, and deception goes undetected.
Teaching Overview
- Anyone who does not know their own spirit is in darkness — regardless of how much they fast or pray.
- The carnal mind is an enemy against God and cannot be subject to the law of God.
- You cannot test another spirit without using your own spirit as the instrument of discernment.
- The devil's deception operates through truth with evil intent — only spiritual discernment can detect the difference.
- The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord — it is the source of light that searches the inward parts and reveals what God has already spoken.
Key Distinctions
| Carnal Mind | Spiritual Mind | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A mind operating through flesh, feelings, and human reasoning | A mind submitted to and governed by the spirit |
| Relationship to God | An enemy against God — not subject to the law of God | Capable of receiving, knowing, and doing the will of God |
| Ability to obey God | Cannot be subject to God — it is impossible | Responsive and submissive to God's will |
| Source of direction | What seems right to a man, what man accepts, what the church applauds | What God accepts — born of the Spirit |
| Result in spiritual warfare | Fights battles through the flesh; never gains victory | Carries ranking in the spirit that demons recognize and fear |
| Gift / Anointing | Path / Purpose | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A divine endowment placed within the spirit | The direction and application through which the gift produces change |
| Who has it | Gifted people may still be poor and without impact | Known only through discerning the spirit |
| What happens without the other | Gifts remain dormant; anointing produces no direction | Path without gift has no divine power behind it |
| How it is accessed | Present in every believer | Discovered through searching the inward parts by the candle of the Lord |
| Truth (Content) | Intent (Spirit) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The literal accuracy of what is spoken | The spiritual motivation and purpose behind what is spoken |
| Can the devil use it? | Yes — the devil spoke truth to Eve and did not lie | The devil's intent was destruction, not revelation |
| How to test it | Cannot be tested by examining words alone | Only testable through discerning the spirit of the one speaking |
| Biblical example | "Ye shall be as gods" — God confirmed this was true | The intent was to destroy Adam and Eve, not elevate them |
| Implication for believers | A false minister can speak accurate doctrine | Without discernment of spirit, you cannot detect evil intent |
| Knowledge | Wisdom | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Information, revelation, and doctrinal content | Understanding that flows from within the spirit |
| Source | Can come from study, demons, or man | Comes from the spirit of man inspired by the Almighty |
| Limitation | A man can have knowledge and revelation and still not be from God | Wisdom through the spirit gives you understanding of everything |
| Biblical example | Adam and Eve received knowledge of good and evil | Solomon's wisdom was of the spirit — discerning all things |
| Danger without the other | Knowledge without spiritual wisdom produced death in Eden | Wisdom through the spirit produces life and direction |
Self-Knowledge as the Gateway to All Discernment
- Anyone who does not know their own spirit will never know another spirit.
- The map of life — the truth of who you truly are and where you are going — is embedded within your spirit.
- Fasting, prayer, and religious activity do not replace spirit-discernment; if those things do not lead you to knowing your spirit, you remain in darkness.
"Anyone who does not know their own spirit is in darkness. I don't care how much you fast. I don't care how much you pray. I don't care how much you do any of those things. If those things don't lead you to knowing your spirit, you're in darkness. You're completely in darkness."
The Carnal Mind as Enemy to God
- The carnal mind is an enemy against God — it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
- Anyone who operates toward God with a carnal mind is operating as an enemy of God, regardless of how accepted they appear to the church or to other people.
- God does not accept anything that is born of carnality — anything inspired by flesh and not by the spirit is rejected by God.
"It is not about what looks good to man. It is not what man accepts. It is about what does God accept. God will never accept anything that is born of carnality."
The Danger of Carnality in Spiritual Action
- There is a way that seems right to a man — the church may applaud it, bishops may affirm it, but God may still identify it as enmity.
- A carnal mind does not have the capability to receive what is of God, to take what is of God, or to do the will of God — it is constitutionally incapable.
- Spiritual battles that appear to be demonic opposition are sometimes the result of a believer's own errors before God — errors produced by operating in the flesh.
"Anyone who says, I'm trying to do the right thing, but I'm not able, is because you're trying to do it with your flesh. You're trying to do it with a carnal mind. It will never work. Because the carnal mind cannot be subject to God. It is impossible."
Illustration: Abraham, Lot, and the Principle of Spiritual Origin
- God told Abraham to go — and Abraham took Lot, whose attachment was not born of the Spirit.
- Abraham could not access the Promised Land until he separated from Lot, because even a good act done outside the Spirit is an act God resists.
- God sometimes allows conflict between people so that believers will realize certain relationships were never ordained by the Spirit to remain.
"Some of you, God is letting you bump heads with people. For you to realize that they were never supposed to be there in the first place. But you are holding on to them saying, but God said... If it is not born of the Spirit it is wrong."
God's Intent Over Man's Rules
- God's commands must be interpreted through the intent behind them — marriage was designed as a good thing, not as bondage.
- Men of God who defend the institution without defending the people within it and the intent of God behind it operate from a carnal framework.
- Anything that is not born of the Spirit is not only sin — it makes the one doing it an enemy of God.
"You see men of God defending marriage, and not the people in it and not the intent of God behind it. Anything you do that is not born of the spirit, is not only a sin, it makes you an enemy of God."
You Are the Inner Man
- Every human being carries a spirit — that spirit is who they truly are.
- A person is not their house, their clothes, their spouse, their car, or their bank balance — they are the inner man, the spirit clothed in flesh.
- Material blessings are good and God-given, but without knowing the person wearing them, a believer is in serious danger.
"You are the inner man, the spirit that is clothed in this flesh. If you don't know the person who's wearing all these things, you're in major trouble."
Testing the Spirits Requires Your Own Spirit
- Believers are commanded to try the spirits, not the content — it is the spirit that must be tested, not the words.
- A person can have knowledge and revelation and still not be from God; a person can make a doctrinal error and still be from God — only testing the spirit reveals the truth.
- A demon can quote scripture perfectly — the words alone are never sufficient evidence of divine origin.
"How can you test something that is spiritual with physicality or carnality? How can you test that which is spiritual without spiritual substance?"
The Devil's Deception: Truth with Evil Intent
- The devil does not always tempt through outright lies — he finds scriptural loopholes and speaks things that are factually true.
- When the serpent told Eve she would become like God, he did not lie — God Himself confirmed this when He said, "Behold, the man has become as one of us."
- The error in the garden was not the content of what was said but the intent behind it and how the knowledge was received.
"The devil's intent was evil. But what the devil said was not a lie. It was true. So Adam and Eve fell because they could not discern their own spirit in order to discern his spirit."
There Are No Secrets in the Spirit
- When the Spirit of Jesus entered this world, the devil knew from birth — because there are no secrets in the Spirit.
- Attacks begin when God is about to bless a believer because every agent in the spiritual world knows God's end goal for that person.
- God's protection is not concealment of His plan — it is the guarantee that His plan cannot be stopped.
"There are no secrets in the Spirit. The protection of God is that they cannot stop what God is about to do for you. When God hides you He is hiding you from their attacks. But He's not hiding what is already set out to do — everybody knows."
Spirits Recognize Each Other: The Demoniac of Gadara
- When Jesus came out of the boat, the demons inside the demoniac saw Him from a distance and ran toward Him — spirits recognize spirits.
- The demons identified Jesus as the Son of the Most High God before any human declaration — spiritual identity is known in the Spirit before it is known in the natural.
- Human beings failed to recognize Jesus as Messiah because they were not spiritual; the demons did not fail, because spirits know each other.
"How did the man know that Jesus was the Son of the living God? It was because spirits know each other. A demon is worshipping Jesus by seeing Him. Because he knows this is the Son of the living God."
Spiritual Ranking and Demonic Awareness
- Demons operate with a knowledge of every spiritual threat — wherever a dangerous believer may be in the world, they are known in the demonic realm.
- The seven sons of Sceva were defeated because the demon tested their ranking in the Spirit and found nothing — they fled the house naked and wounded.
- The devil's ability to defeat a believer is directly proportional to that believer's absence of spiritual ranking.
"There is no white that devil is beating you. You have no ranking in the spirit. They know everyone that is at threat to the Kingdom. There is no distance in the spiritual realm."
Spiritual Maturity, Not Words Alone, Gives Authority
- Quoting the word of God alone does not produce spiritual ranking — demons are not subject to recitation; they are subject to spiritual maturity.
- All scripture is given by inspiration of God, but the spirit of man and the inspiration of the Almighty are what give understanding of that scripture.
- When a believer becomes spiritual, another influence begins to move their mind — because the soul cannot be subject to God directly, but it will be subject to the spirit.
"Somebody said the word of God gives you ranking. No. Your spiritual maturity does. You can have the word of God and demons will be fearless."
The Spirit of Man as the Candle of the Lord
- The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord — God's instrument for illuminating what is hidden within a person.
- It is not the light itself, but the candle — the source of light within this realm.
- God uses the spirit of man to search all the inward parts — to know the mind and intent of God for that individual.
"The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord. It is not the light, it is the candle. It is the source of light in this realm, the spirit of man."
Gifting Without Path, Anointing Without Direction
- There are gifted people who are poor and anointed people who produce no change in the world — gifting alone does not reveal the path.
- To know what to do with what God has given you requires discerning your spirit, not merely activating your gift.
- The candle of the Lord searches the inward parts to reveal direction, assignment, and the specific path through which the gift will produce fruit.
"To be gifted does not mean you know the path to go with what God has given you. To be anointed doesn't mean you know what path you need to go."
Prayer as the Unveiling of the Spirit
- Prayer is not primarily a mechanism for making requests — it is intended to uncover what is already within your spirit.
- Every prayer a believer has ever prayed, God has already answered — the answer is hidden within the spirit, waiting to be searched and discovered.
- Without discerning the spirit, a believer prays without knowing what they are saying to God and cannot receive what God has already deposited.
"Prayer is intended to uncover what is within your spirit. You pray so that your spirit can be uncovered, so that you know what God has already said."
Key Definitions
Carnal Mind — A mind operating through flesh, feelings, and human reasoning that is constitutionally incapable of submission to the law of God and that renders the one operating from it an enemy of God.
Discernment of the Spirit — The ability to test, examine, and know the intent and nature of a spirit — which begins with, and is impossible without, first knowing one's own spirit.
Carnality — Everything not born of the Spirit of God; not merely sinful behaviour, but any thought, action, or motive that originates in the flesh rather than the spirit.
The Candle of the Lord — The spirit of man, named in Proverbs 20:27 as the instrument God uses to search the inward parts — the source of spiritual light and self-revelation within each person.
Intent — The spiritual motivation behind what is spoken or done, as distinct from the literal content or truth of the words; the dimension of reality that only spirit-to-spirit discernment can detect.
Spiritual Ranking — A believer's authority and standing in the spirit realm, determined not by knowledge of scripture alone but by spiritual maturity — the dimension by which demons either recognize and fear a believer or do not.
Key Takeaways
- Self-knowledge of the spirit is the foundation of all discernment — without knowing your own spirit, you cannot discern God, evil spirits, other people's intentions, or even what you are saying when you pray.
- The carnal mind is an enemy of God, not merely a weakness — operating toward God through flesh is not spiritual immaturity to be tolerated; it is a state of enmity that disqualifies everything done in it.
- The devil deceives through truth, not lies — because the enemy uses factually accurate statements with destructive intent, only spirit-level discernment can protect you from his deception.
- Your spiritual maturity determines your authority, not your knowledge of scripture — demons are subject to ranking in the spirit, not to recitation of verses, which is why spiritual maturity must be pursued above all else.
- The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, given to search the hidden things God has already placed within you — gifts, direction, answers to prayer, and divine purpose are already deposited in your spirit, waiting to be uncovered through discernment.
Reflection Questions
- If the map of your life is embedded within your spirit, what practices in your daily life are actually helping you search and know your own spirit — and which habits are keeping you in the dark?
- Where in your life are you making decisions based on what seems right, what the church approves, or what other people affirm — rather than on what God accepts as born of the Spirit?
- The devil can speak the truth with an evil intent. Are there voices, relationships, or spiritual influences in your life whose content sounds correct but whose spirit you have never actually tested?
- Your spiritual maturity — not your knowledge of scripture — determines your ranking in the spirit realm. Honestly assessed, where does your spiritual maturity stand, and what would it take to grow it?
- If prayer is meant to uncover what God has already deposited in your spirit, how is your current prayer life actually searching your spirit — and is there anything you have been asking God for whose answer is already within you, waiting to be discerned?
Prayers and Declarations
"Father, we thank you for your precious word. We thank you for your word, that changes man, that changes the hearts that renews minds. Father, we thank you, that you have given us a new spirit. The moment we received you, you gave us a new spirit. Father, I pray in the name of your Son Jesus. That we will begin to awaken completely into this truth. May our candles be lit up this day, and discernment of our own spirit will begin, like we have never seen before. Father, we bless you for this word, we bless you for all the sacrifices of people that are giving towards your house. And we thank you for the depth that you will take us even to more in this word. By the time we are done, people will be able to know the difference between right and wrong, the direction they should take, who they should marry, who should they should do business with, what path to take? Lord, let it be done by reason of this message. I bless you, Father, I glorify you, Lord, in Jesus mighty name, amen."
