Discernment vs. Deception: Why Most Christians Don't Know What Discernment Really Is
True discernment is not a feeling, a logic, or a sense of peace — it is a spiritual function that develops through direct encounter with God.
Discernment is one of the most misunderstood and misused concepts in the Church. Most believers assume they are exercising discernment when they follow their feelings, apply logic, or experience a sense of peace about a decision. But these are not discernment — and confusing them with discernment leaves Christians wide open to deception. The greatest danger is not external: your own heart is more capable of deceiving you than the devil himself.
Teaching Overview
- Discernment is not logic, feeling, peace, or dreams — it is a spiritual function that cannot be turned on or off at will.
- The human heart is deceitful above all things, meaning most Christians are deceived by themselves, not by the devil.
- Peace is not discernment — you can have peace about something that God is not in.
- Scripture is good but it points you beyond itself — you are called to encounter the living Jesus, not merely remain in the pages.
- True discernment is developed over time, even great prophets like Samuel were still developing it.
Key Distinctions
| Discernment | Logic | Feeling | Dreams | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A spiritual function developed through direct encounter with God | Rational reasoning applied to a situation | An emotional or intuitive response | A night vision or impression |
| Source | The Spirit of God working in a developed spiritual capacity | The natural mind | The heart and emotions | The spirit or subconscious |
| Can it be turned on or off? | No — it is not a tool you pick up and use | Yes — it is applied as needed | Varies — emotions fluctuate | No — it occurs independently of will |
| Can it deceive you? | No — when operating purely | Yes — reasoning can justify wrong decisions | Yes — the heart is deceitful above all things | Yes — not all dreams originate from God |
| Developed over time? | Yes — even Samuel was still developing it | Can be sharpened but remains natural | Matures with experience but remains natural | Not a trainable skill |
| Sufficient for direction? | Only when grounded in God's voice | Never sufficient alone | Never sufficient alone | Not sufficient alone |
Key Distinctions: Scripture vs. Spiritual Experience
| Scripture | Spiritual Experience | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The written Word of God | Direct encounter with the living Jesus |
| Its purpose | To testify about Jesus and point you to Him | To fulfil what the Scripture promises |
| Where it leads | To a living encounter — not to itself alone | Into the reality that Scripture describes |
| Risk if misused | Remaining in the pages without finding Him | Being dismissed by those who deny present-day encounter |
| Relationship between the two | Scripture calls you higher — to experience what you read | Experience is the destination Scripture points toward |
Key Distinctions: Peace vs. Discernment
| Peace (Human) | Peace of God | Discernment | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A natural sense of calm or comfort about a decision | A supernatural peace that surpasses all understanding | A spiritual function of direct knowing from God |
| Can you understand it? | Yes — it makes sense to you | No — it surpasses understanding | It transcends natural reasoning |
| Does it confirm God's direction? | No — you can have it when God is not in the situation | Not automatically — Jesus experienced anguish before the cross, which was God's will | Yes — when genuinely operating |
| Basis in Scripture | Not presented as a method of divine guidance | Philippians 4 — "the peace of God which passeth all understanding" | Developed through relationship and spiritual growth |
| Danger if misused | Making life decisions — relationships, business — based on comfort | Mistaking emotional rest for divine confirmation | Claiming to "use" discernment as if it were a tool |
Key Distinctions: Physical Death vs. Spiritual Dryness
| Physical Death | Spiritual Dryness / Premature Death | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The cessation of biological life | A demonic pattern that stops men from becoming anything or fulfilling purpose |
| How it manifests | Bodily death | Things starting but never finishing; collapse; instability; depression; broken relationships |
| Who it targets | Individuals | Generational family lines |
| Its origin | Natural or spiritual attack | A generational curse passed down through the family line |
| Can it be broken? | Through resurrection power | Yes — through prayer, deliverance, and God's intervention |
What Discernment Is Not
- Discernment is not logic — applying rational reasoning to a situation is not the same as discerning spiritually.
- Discernment is not how something makes you feel, or the fact that it "did not sit right" with you.
- Discernment is not a tool you pick up, turn on, or turn off at will.
"If you ever hear somebody telling you use the sentiment, can you not use the sentiment? That person has no idea what the sentiment is. The sentiment is not something you use."
The Deception of the Human Heart
- Most Christians are not deceived by the devil — they are deceived by themselves.
- The heart is deceitful above all things, which means your own heart is more capable of deceiving you than Satan is.
- Satan's strategy is to trick you so that you deceive yourself — the deception begins from within.
"Many of you have been deceived. And you are not deceived by the devil. You are deceived by yourself. Because the heart is deceitful above all things."
Peace Is Not Discernment
- Having peace about a decision does not mean God is in it — peace can be produced in multiple ways that have nothing to do with God's direction.
- Countless Christians have entered wrong relationships and failed business dealings because they confused emotional peace with divine confirmation.
- When God appeared in Scripture, men fell like dead men — angels had to declare "peace, be still." The experience of God is not quiet comfort.
"Peace is not discernment. You can have peace about something and God is not in it. So having peace doesn't mean it is God sending you."
The Peace of God Surpasses Understanding
- Jesus declared, "My peace I give you" — and this peace surpasses understanding, meaning it cannot be processed by the natural mind.
- If you can understand the peace you are experiencing, it is not the peace of God — it is human peace.
- Jesus Himself experienced anguish and torment in Gethsemane on the way to the cross, yet that path was entirely God's will — so the presence of distress does not mean God is absent, and the presence of peace does not mean God is present.
"Jesus, our Lord said this, My peace I give you, surpasses understanding. So if you have understanding, it's not peace."
Discernment Is Developed, Not Deployed
- Even Samuel — one of the greatest prophets in Scripture — was still developing his discernment when he was sent to anoint the king from Jesse's house.
- If a prophet of Samuel's stature was still in the process of developing discernment, believers today cannot assume they have mastered it.
- Discernment is not a gift you activate — it is a spiritual capacity that grows over time through relationship with God.
"If a great prophet likes Samuel, was still developing discernment. What about you?"
Scripture Points Beyond Itself
- The written Word of God is good, but it is calling you to a higher place — it is not the destination.
- Jesus rebuked those who searched the Scriptures thinking life was in them, declaring that the Scriptures only point to Him.
- What you read about in Scripture you are meant to experience — if it remains only in the pages, you have not yet found Him.
"What you read about you need to experience it. The living Jesus is not in pages. The pages testify about him so you can find him."
Key Definitions
Discernment — A spiritual function that develops over time through relationship with God; it is not a tool that can be turned on or off, and it operates independently of logic, feeling, peace, or dreams.
Peace (human) — A natural sense of calm or comfort about a situation that can be produced by multiple sources; it is not evidence of God's direction and cannot function as a substitute for discernment.
The Peace of God — The supernatural peace Jesus promised His disciples, which surpasses all understanding; because it transcends human comprehension, it cannot be identified or verified by how comfortable or settled one feels.
Heart (deceitful) — The inner seat of human desire and will that, according to Scripture, is deceitful above all things; it is capable of deceiving a believer more effectively than the devil, making self-deception the primary danger for most Christians.
Spiritual dryness / Premature death — A demonic pattern operating generationally in a family line that prevents men from becoming anything or fulfilling purpose; it manifests as things starting but never finishing, collapse, instability, and depression — and is distinct from physical death.
Scripture — The written Word of God that testifies about Jesus and calls believers to encounter Him directly; its purpose is not to be an endpoint but to point the reader to a living relationship with the Christ it describes.
Key Takeaways
- Discernment cannot be turned on or off — it is developed, not deployed. Treating it as a spiritual switch you control means you do not yet understand what discernment is.
- Your heart is more dangerous to you than the devil. Because the heart is deceitful above all things, the greatest source of deception in most believers' lives is internal, not external.
- Peace is not confirmation of God's will. Basing decisions — in relationships, business, or ministry — on a sense of peace is not spiritual guidance; it is a counterfeit that has led countless Christians into error.
- The peace of God surpasses understanding — meaning if you can explain it, it isn't it. Human comfort and God's supernatural peace are not the same experience, and confusing them costs believers the ability to be genuinely led.
- Scripture is a pointer, not a destination. God's Word calls you into direct encounter with the living Jesus — remaining only in the text without seeking the One it testifies about means you have not yet fully found Him.
Reflection Questions
- When you have made important decisions in your life — relationships, career, ministry — what did you actually base those decisions on? Logic? A sense of peace? A feeling? How does this teaching challenge the method you have been using?
- In what areas of your life is it possible that you have deceived yourself rather than been deceived by the devil? What does your heart tell you about a situation that God may be saying something different about?
- Have you ever confused having peace with having God's direction? What was the outcome, and how does this teaching reframe what happened?
- If discernment is not a tool you turn on or off but a capacity that develops over time, what does your current investment in developing it actually look like? What would need to change?
- Are you primarily consuming Scripture as information, or is your engagement with the Word actively leading you toward direct encounter with the living Jesus? What would it look like practically to pursue the latter?
