Dry Oil Revealed: The Internal Transformation That Prepares You for the Rapture
The lamp without oil is the greatest deception in the church — the appearance of salvation without the burning within.
Preparing for the coming of the Lord is real and urgent — but most teaching on the rapture focuses on external behavior rather than the internal oil that causes the spirit to burn. The parable of the ten virgins reveals that both the foolish and the wise were pure, yet only those who carried oil went in with the bridegroom. The central question is not how polished your lamp looks — it is whether your oil is burning.
Teaching Overview
- Number one, the greatest sign is fear.
- Number two, you are no longer sensitive to the Holy Spirit, because everything about you is external.
Key Distinctions
| Lamp | Oil | |
|---|---|---|
| What it represents | The spirit of man — the vessel of your spiritual life | The Word of God and the Holy Spirit working within you |
| Who holds it | Both wise and foolish virgins — all believers | Only the wise virgins — those who pursued internal transformation |
| What it produces | The appearance of spiritual readiness | The actual burning that produces light and warmth |
| Can it be borrowed? | Not in view — both groups had lamps | No — it cannot be transferred from one person to another |
| Where it is obtained | Through appointed ministers equipping the church | Through a price — seeking those who carry the transforming message |
| What its absence reveals | Nothing is wrong externally — the lamp looks fine | No internal life; the spirit does not burn; no communion with God |
| External Reformation | Internal Transformation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it focuses on | Polishing the lamp — behavior, appearance, external righteousness | The oil within — the Word renewing the inner man |
| What drives it | Fear, legalism, desire to be seen as righteous by others | The Word of God causing the spirit to burn from within |
| What it produces | Religion without fire; consistency in form but absence of God's presence | Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit; the manifestation of God in prayer |
| What happens at the rapture | The lamp is found without oil — left behind | The oil is burning — ready when the bridegroom comes |
| Foolish Virgins | Wise Virgins | |
|---|---|---|
| Purity | Pure — never defiled | Pure — never defiled |
| Had a lamp | Yes | Yes |
| Had oil | No | Yes |
| Slept while waiting | Yes | Yes |
| Outcome | Left behind — the Lord said, "I know you not" | Went in with the bridegroom |
| Root issue | External religion without internal burning | Internal transformation through the Word |
| Prayer | The Word | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Communication and exchange with God | The ordained path for transformation and renewal of the mind |
| Does it change man? | No — prayer does not change man | Yes — the only thing that changes man is the Word of God |
| What can provoke it | Suffering, not necessarily the desire to change | The deliberate pursuit of internal transformation |
| What it produces | Exchange and communion | The burning of the inner man; sensitivity to the Holy Spirit |
| Fear | Shepherd Relationship | |
|---|---|---|
| What it signals | The Lord is not your shepherd; oil is dry or absent | The Lord is your shepherd; a caretaker who cares for you |
| Source | Absence of internal transformation; no oil | The finished work of the cross — salvation, purification, sanctification |
| Effect on the soul | Consistent anxiety, guilt, self-condemnation | Fear is eradicated; you no longer operate by your own guilty conscience |
| Scriptural anchor | God has not given us the spirit of fear — 2 Timothy 1:7 | Even if my heart condemns me, God is greater than my heart — 1 John 3:20 |
| Burning | Conserving Oil | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | Actively spending spiritual energy and impartation | Knowing when to hold your fire and preserve what you carry |
| The danger of misuse | Burning in the wrong season — wasting what was meant to sustain you | Becoming legalistic and controlling until you are completely dry |
| What dryness produces | No revelation; sin no longer opens into revelation; nothing internal remains | A lamp that looks polished but has no capacity to light up |
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
- The ten virgins represent two groups of believers within the church — not those in the world.
- Both groups were pure; the word virgin means never defiled — their crime was not a physical sin.
- Five is the number of grace; ten is the number of completion — and all ten slumbered while the bridegroom tarried.
"The foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them. But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps."
The Source of the Lamp and the Oil
- The bridegroom did not provide the lamp or the oil — both came through others who prepared the virgins to meet him.
- The Lord Jesus, having ascended, gave gifts to men — apostles, prophets, teachers, evangelists — for the perfection of the church until He comes.
- The foolish virgins were told to go to the same source that sold lamps and buy oil — meaning the oil was always available but they did not obtain it when they had the opportunity.
"The Lord Jesus said, the one who ascended gave gifts to men, some apostles, some prophets, some teachers, some evangelists, to the perfection of the church until he is coming."
What the Oil Actually Is
- The spirit of man is the candlestick of the Lord — your spirit is the lamp, but the oil is the fuel that causes your spirit to burn.
- The oil is not the anointing oil — the anointing sets you apart; the oil is the Word of God and the Holy Spirit working within you.
- The appearance of salvation does not mean you will be raptured — the purpose of a lamp is to burn, not merely to exist.
"The appearance of salvation doesn't mean you'll be raptured. Because the purpose of a lamp is to burn. If it is not burning and you just have a lamp, you just look like you're going to burn, but it doesn't mean anything."
External Religion Without Internal Fire
- Many believers polish their lamps — cleaning them, adorning them — while carrying no oil, because no message is causing the flame of their inner man to burn.
- There is external reformation but no internal transformation — Christianity made to be seen by man, not changed by God.
- The only thing that is immaterial in the lamp is the fire, and the fire represents the spirit — without oil, the lamp is dead, pointless, useless.
"The issue is not the lamp. The issue is can it burn? The oil."
Prayer Does Not Change You — The Word Does
- Prayer is communication and exchange with God — but God ordained the Word as the path for transformation and the renewal of the mind.
- Prayer can be provoked by suffering but not necessarily by a desire to change — and even when the desire is present, change cannot happen without the Word.
- The Lord Jesus Himself taught that the Word is what causes people to hear, be changed, and be saved.
"Prayer is important. Prayer is powerful, but prayer does not change man."
The Power to Become — What the Oil Actually Gives You
- John 1:12 presents two dispensations: those who received Jesus physically, and those who believe on His name — but both received the same power.
- The oil people are searching for is the power to become sons of God — not the power to appear righteous, but the power to be transformed.
- You cannot find God for yourself — someone must preach to you, because the same way you did not get born again alone, you cannot grow alone.
"But as many as received him to them gave him power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
The Assigned Shepherd and the Customised Message
- God assigns a shepherd to every believer — not necessarily their favourite preacher, but the one who carries the message designed to transform them.
- The Word of God is not equal for everyone — there is a custom message for every individual and every tribe, tailored to where they are and what God is saying to them.
- Chasing popular ministry while abandoning your assigned shepherd means missing the oil that was meant to cause you to burn.
"A good message is not a message for everybody."
Internal Sins That Reveal Dry Oil
- Sin is not always external — the greatest sins are internal: not believing God can heal, not believing He can change your situation, surrendering to pain instead of allowing it to refine you.
- These are the sins of virgins — people who are outwardly pure but inwardly deficient, using physical means where they should be using spiritual ones.
- The oil works regardless of the vessel — if a message has produced salvation, healing, and transformation, the vessel's imperfections do not negate the work of God through it.
"Some of you, the people that spoke the message that would change you, you abandoned them to what was popular. Yet they carried the message of your transformation."
Sign One — The Spirit of Fear
- The greatest sign that your oil is dry or absent is consistent fear — fear of hell, fear of what you look like, fear of not making it.
- The virgins had no fear sleeping — they were confident that when the bridegroom came, their oil and lamp would serve their purpose.
- God has not given believers the spirit of fear, but of love, power, and a sound mind — if fear dominates you, it is evidence of internal lack, not just emotional struggle.
"When you live in consistent fear, it means the Lord is not your shepherd. When fear has been eradicated from your inner man, from your soul, from your physical life, your body, it means indeed there is a caretaker that cares for you."
Sign Two — No Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit
- When the oil is dry or absent, sensitivity to the Holy Spirit becomes non-existent — because there is nothing internal, and whatever is internal is eternal.
- Many believers pray and there is no manifestation of God's presence — no deliverance, no healing, no evidence that God is with them — only a dry lamp.
- Every external work means nothing if there is no oil backing it up from within — the outward man is adorned while the inward man is completely ignored.
"Every work you do externally means nothing if there is no oil that backs it up from within. We are deceiving ourselves by working on the outward man and not the inward man."
The Danger of Burning Out Through Legalism
- There is a time to burn and a time to conserve oil — knowing the difference is essential to sustaining your spiritual life until the Lord comes.
- Many believers have exhausted what they were given by becoming legalistic — wanting everyone to become like them until they are left dry with no revelation and no message.
- Training the mind externally does not equal changing the subconscious — doing things externally does not mean you have changed internally.
"Many of you have exhausted the little that you have in you that was supposed to get you when the Lord comes. You have wasted it because you've become legalistic."
Key Definitions
Virgin — A believer who has never been defiled — one whose standing is pure. In the parable, both foolish and wise virgins were pure; the distinguishing factor was not their purity but whether they carried oil.
Lamp — The spirit of man, described in Proverbs 20:27 as the candlestick of the Lord — the vessel that is meant to burn, not merely to exist or be polished.
Oil — The fuel that causes the spirit to burn — the Word of God and the Holy Spirit working within you. It is not the anointing oil; the anointing sets you apart, but the oil is what sustains your internal fire.
External Reformation — The work of polishing and adorning the outward man — behaviour, appearance, and religious activity — without any internal transformation driven by the Word.
Internal Transformation — The work of the Word renewing the inner man, causing the spirit to burn, producing sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and the manifested presence of God.
The Power to Become — The oil that believers are searching for — the power given to all who receive Him and believe on His name to become sons of God, not merely to appear saved.
Key Takeaways
- The appearance of salvation does not guarantee being raptured — the purpose of a lamp is to burn, and a lamp without oil is useless regardless of how clean it looks.
- Prayer does not change man — the Word does — transformation comes through the ordained path of the Word renewing the mind, not through prayer alone.
- The greatest sign of dry oil is consistent fear — when the Lord is truly your shepherd, fear is eradicated from your inner man because you rely on the finished work of the cross.
- There is a customised message for every believer — abandoning your assigned shepherd to chase popular ministry means missing the specific oil designed to cause you to burn.
- External works mean nothing without internal oil — every act of outward righteousness that has no burning oil behind it is empty religion, not transformation.
Reflection Questions
- When you examine your spiritual life honestly, is your lamp burning — or are you simply carrying a polished lamp with no oil inside?
- Have you ever abandoned a minister or message that was causing you to grow internally because it was not popular or appealing externally? What did you lose in that decision?
- Is consistent fear present in your life — fear of hell, fear of not making it, fear of what others think of your Christianity? What does that fear reveal about the state of your inner man?
- Are you working harder on external righteousness — behaviour, appearances, religious activity — than on the internal work of letting the Word renew your mind? What would have to change?
- What specific message or assigned shepherd have you been resisting or neglecting, and what would it cost you to surrender to the transformation that message carries?
