Increasing Your Mastery: How to Unlock the Full Power of the Spiritual Gift God Already Gave You

Increasing Your Mastery: How to Unlock the Full Power of the Spiritual Gift God Already Gave You

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 20 September 2022

Every believer already carries a perfect, complete spiritual gift — the only thing standing between you and its full expression is ignorance and lack of cultivation.

God has given every believer who receives Jesus Christ a complete and perfect spiritual gift. That gift is not partial, not on its way, and not waiting to be unlocked by a special anointing service — it is already inside you. The barrier is not God's withholding; it is ignorance of what has been given and the absence of love-driven mastery. As understanding grows and the flame of the gift is intentionally fanned, God's full expression through you is released to edify the church and transform lives.

Teaching Overview

  1. Spiritual gifts are God's complete and perfect expression deposited in every believer at salvation — they do not increase, but mastery of them does.
  2. Ignorance of spiritual gifts is the primary obstacle preventing believers from expressing God's power — it disqualifies even sincere, passionate, fasting believers.
  3. The gift is fanned into flame through love for God's people, desire to see lives changed, and intentional cultivation of a relationship with the gift.
  4. Hearing God's voice is a matter of capacity, not God's willingness to speak — growing in the Word increases the believer's ability to perceive what God is always saying.
  5. Every servant of God must represent the Master — not themselves — making the expression of the gift about Jesus, not personal greatness.

Key Distinctions

Spirit UponSpirit Within
What it isThe anointing for ministry and outward operationThe indwelling presence of God for salvation and inward expression
Primary purposeEnables ministry and outward worksProduces salvation and cultivates God's character from the inside out
Direction of workOutside expression of powerInside out — God always works from within
Risk if neglectedMajor character flaws that cost the work of GodFailure to grow in the expression of who God is in you
Which is greaterLesser — having the spirit upon does not make you superiorGreater — the spirit within is actually more important than the spirit upon
SoundVoice
What it isAn audible or spiritual signal from GodThe intelligible, decoded communication of God
Who perceives itAnyone in proximity, regardless of capacityOnly those with sufficient spiritual capacity to decode it
Biblical examplePaul's companions heard a sound on the Damascus RoadPaul alone heard and understood what was spoken
What grows itAccumulation of God's Word, which gives light and builds hearing capacity
Prayer implicationAsking God to speak louder is the wrong prayerThe correct prayer is for your capacity to perceive God to increase
Love of PeopleLove of God's People
What it isNatural human affection and empathy for othersGod-sourced love for those who belong to Him
OriginThe soul — inherently self-referentialBorn of God — agape, not conditional on behavior
How it responds to rejectionWithdraws — "when they do you wrong you will turn against them"Remains — they are His, not yours, even when they misbehave
Motivation for servingServes people because you like themServes because God loves them and you love Him
Capacity under pressureWill not sustain six to eight hours of intercession for people who have wronged youCan stand and pray with everything in you regardless of conditions
Good WorksExpression of God
What it isMorally praiseworthy human actionThe manifestation of the Holy Spirit through a yielded vessel
Who can do itAnyone — believers and unbelievers alikeOnly those operating in spiritual gifts
Whether it proves GodNo — feeding the poor, clothing the needy, and caring for widows does not prove God's presenceYes — the gift makes the person an extension of God's own expression to humanity
SourceHuman goodness and compassionThe Holy Spirit — "to each is given the manifestation of the spirit for the common good"

The Purpose of God Is Overflow

  • God created man for His own pleasure, and His ultimate desire is that believers experience satisfaction in every area of life.
  • When God works in and through a believer, He is fulfilling His own desire — His pleasure and the believer's overflow are inseparable.
  • God's intention is that a believer's cup overflows with joy so completely that it spills onto others and reveals who He is.

"It is God's ultimate desire that your cup is so filled with joy, that you are overflowing with joy, that it drops off on other people, that they may know who He is."

Ignorance Is the Primary Poison

  • Ignorance — being uninformed — automatically disqualifies a person from prospering in what they do not know, including spiritual gifts.
  • Even sincere believers who fast and pray can, through ignorance, hinder others who are on the fast track of being used by God.
  • Ignorance of the operations of the Spirit plunges a believer into utter confusion when it comes to the things of God.

"The biggest poison when it comes to spiritual gifts is ignorance."

Spiritual Gifts Are God's Expression Through You

  • Spiritual gifts are not human abilities — they are God's own expression operating through a yielded vessel.
  • A believer who operates in a spiritual gift becomes an extension of God's expression to humanity; one without an active gift lacks the ability to express God.
  • Good works — feeding the homeless, clothing the needy, caring for widows — do not constitute the expression of God unless the Spirit is operating through the gift.

"Spiritual gifts are an expression of God. Whoever can get hold of what the Holy Spirit gives immediately becomes an extension of God's own expression to humanity."

Every Spirit Requires a Conduit

  • Every spirit — holy or demonic — requires a conduit capable of carrying out its desired expression.
  • Evil spirits cannot operate through a vessel that lacks the physical or spiritual capacity to express them — a mute cannot carry the spirit of gossip, a blind person is immune to the spirit of Jezebel.
  • The Holy Spirit similarly requires a yielded, capable vessel through which to express God's power — growing that capacity is the believer's responsibility.

"Every spirit needs a conduit, needs something that it can carry out the manifestation that it desires."

Money as a Conduit of Expression

  • Money is not merely a medium of exchange — it is a conduit of expression that reveals and amplifies what is already within a person's spirit.
  • A generous spirit becomes more generous with money; a prideful spirit uses wealth to belittle; a boastful spirit uses wealth for show — money reveals, it does not create, the inner man.
  • God Himself uses money as a conduit to express His provision, and He forbids the love of money, not money itself — gold and diamonds exist in heaven.

"It is a conduit of expression. It is not just a means to exchange. It's a conduit of expression."

The Gift Is Already Perfect and Complete

  • Every gift God gives is not only good — it is perfect. God has never given a believer half a gift or a partial gift.
  • The gift does not increase; what increases is the believer's mastery of it and the reduction of their ignorance about it.
  • To say a spiritual gift will grow stronger is a deception — the gift is an expression of God's strength, which is already complete.

"Anyone who ever tells you that your spiritual gift will increase deceived you because the gift of God does not increase. The gift is an expression of God's strength."

The Holy Spirit Within You Proves You Are God's Child

  • Just as a child inherits their parent's appearance, mannerisms, and instincts, every believer receives from God a DNA of spiritual expression that proves they are His child.
  • No one speaking by the Spirit of God will undermine or deny the divinity of Jesus — the Holy Spirit always glorifies and reveals Jesus.
  • It is impossible to call Jesus Lord apart from the Holy Spirit — every believer who confesses Jesus as Lord already has the Holy Spirit within them.

"It is impossible for you to call Jesus Lord unless the Holy Spirit is in you."

Hearing God's Voice Is a Matter of Capacity

  • On the Damascus Road, Paul's companions saw the light and heard a sound but could not decode God's voice — capacity, not proximity, determines whether a believer hears God's voice.
  • Sound and voice are not the same: to hear a sound is to perceive a signal; to hear the voice is to understand what God is actually saying.
  • The entrance of God's Word gives light — not the understanding of it. Continued reading accumulates light and increases the capacity to hear God's voice.

"To hear my sound and to hear my voice are two different things."

You Were Born a Winner

  • Every person alive won a race against millions — they are already the strongest, already chosen, already selected by God before birth.
  • God knew and ordained each believer before they were born, as He declared over Jeremiah — there are no accidents in God's design.
  • The same winner's identity that brought you into the world is the foundation from which God expects you to operate in your gift.

"You were born a winner. You have never been an accident. You have always been God's chosen, God's anointed, God's selected."

How to Fan the Flame of the Gift

  • The gift is fanned into flame, first and foremost, by the love of God — not the love of people, but the love of God's people, who belong to Him regardless of how they behave.
  • Mastery grows through intentional cultivation: creating a relationship with the gift the way a person creates a relationship with anything they give consistent attention to.
  • Desire to see lives changed, desire to be an asset for the kingdom, and a commitment to represent the Master — not yourself — are the conditions under which the flame is sustained.

"You must be driven by the love of God, not the love for people, the love of God first. You must love God so much that you want to express Him."

Every Servant Must Represent the Master

  • The purpose of the gift is to edify the church — a believer with no expression of the gift is weak, and a church without the expression of gifts is weak.
  • Every servant must make the gift about Jesus, not about their own greatness — the expression should point to the Master, not to the vessel.
  • When the gift is exercised in this posture, it brings honor and glory to the house of God and to the Father in heaven.

"Every servant should represent the Master, not themselves. Make it about Jesus, not about how great you are."

Key Definitions

Spiritual Gift — An expression of God Himself, deposited perfectly and completely in every believer at salvation, enabling them to extend God's own expression to humanity.

Ignorance — Being uninformed; the primary disqualifier that prevents a believer from prospering in their spiritual gift, regardless of sincerity, passion, or religious practice.

Sound vs. Voice — A sound is the signal of God's communication perceived by those in proximity; the voice is the intelligible, decoded meaning of what God is saying, received only by those with sufficient spiritual capacity.

Spirit Upon — The anointing for ministry and outward operation; distinct from and lesser than the spirit within.

Spirit Within — The indwelling presence of God for salvation and the inward expression of God, from which all outward expression flows — God always works from the inside out.

Mastery — The cultivated ability to express the full gift God has already given; not a growth of the gift itself but a reduction of ignorance and an increase in the believer's relationship with what they have been given.

Key Takeaways

  • Spiritual gifts are already perfect and complete at salvation — Understanding this eliminates the fruitless pursuit of a "stronger" gift and redirects the believer toward cultivating what they already possess.
  • Ignorance, not lack of gifting, is the real problem — Even fasting, praying, and passionate believers can fail to express God if they remain uninformed about how their gift operates.
  • Hearing God's voice is a capacity issue, not a volume issue — Praying for God to speak louder is the wrong prayer; the right pursuit is increasing one's spiritual capacity through the accumulation of the Word.
  • The gift must be fanned by love for God's people, not love of people — Only a love rooted in God will sustain service under rejection, persecution, and difficulty.
  • Mastery comes through cultivated relationship with the gift — The same intentionality a person brings to social media, clothing, or any cultivated habit must be brought to the expression of the gift.

Reflection Questions

  1. If your spiritual gift is already complete and perfect, what specific area of ignorance do you need to address to begin expressing it more fully?
  2. Are you serving God because you love people, or because you love God's people? How would your response to rejection or persecution differ between the two?
  3. When you pray, are you asking God to speak more loudly — or are you intentionally building your capacity to hear His voice through consistent time in the Word?
  4. What relationship have you cultivated more intentionally than your relationship with your spiritual gift — and what would change if you reversed that priority?
  5. Is the expression of your gift currently pointing people to Jesus, or to your own ability and personality? What would it look like to make it fully about the Master this week?

Prayers and Declarations

"Father, bless your people as this word has come into them, that now they know, assuredly, assuredly, assuredly, that you have given us only perfect gifts. Let the gift in them be more visible that they may have mastery over what you have given them for the salvation of many souls and for the edification of the brothers and sisters. Father we thank you that you have done it in Jesus' name. Amen."
