Signs of Pneuma Akatharton: Recognizing the Presence of Unclean Spirits Around Your Life

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 7 November 2023

Unclean spirits do not need to possess you to destroy you — their presence alone is enough to corrupt your body, mind, relationships, and destiny.

Spiritual progress is measured not by material gain but by the ability to fulfill the destiny God has assigned to your life. The greatest threat to that destiny is not always a demon inside you — it is often one that operates around you. Understanding the nature, signs, and strategies of unclean spirits (pneuma akatharton) is essential to securing your life in God.

Teaching Overview

  1. Spiritual progress is measured by the fulfillment of God-given destiny, and evil spirits exist specifically to interrupt that fulfillment.
  2. There is a fundamental difference between a spirit being inside a person and a spirit operating around a person — and most believers need deliverance from the latter.
  3. The spirit realm is hierarchical: devils, seducing spirits, demons, and unclean spirits are distinct classes with distinct assignments.
  4. Unclean spirits operate around people's lives to corrupt the body, defile relationships, distort self-image, and corrupt the mind through unclean thoughts.
  5. Discerning and resisting unclean spirits — through prayer, cleansing, and guarding the mind — is a non-negotiable responsibility of the believer.

The Measure of Spiritual Progress

  • Spiritual elevation is always reflected by visible progress in life — not primarily material gain, but the ability to fulfill God-assigned destiny.
  • The correct measure of progress is whether a person is fulfilling what God set them on earth to do.
  • The primary objective of evil spirits is to prevent believers from fulfilling their spiritual destiny — not necessarily to stop them from acquiring material success.

Possession vs. Presence: A Critical Distinction

  • A spirit being inside a person and a spirit being around a person are two completely distinct spiritual experiences.
  • A demon operating around a person does not prevent that person from attending church, praising God, or singing worship — it does not need to, because it is not inside them.
  • A demon around a person knows the seasons to come and cause problems, precisely because the person cannot cast it out through traditional deliverance — it is not inside them to be expelled.

"A lot of you don't need deliverance from a demon inside of you. You need deliverance from a demon that is around you."

Jesus and the Reality of Satanic Presence

  • Jesus was never possessed by a demon — yet Satan came to Him personally in the wilderness during His fast.
  • Satan's presence around Jesus was real enough to tempt Him; all Jesus could do was resist him.
  • After the temptation, the devil departed from Jesus only until another appointed time — demonstrating that demonic presence operates in seasons.

Spiritual Camps and the Absence of God's Cover

  • If a believer is not spiritually sharp, demons will build a camp around their life — not entering, but surrounding.
  • Psalm 34:7 establishes that the angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear Him — this reveals that spiritual beings, both angelic and demonic, are capable of surrounding an entire life.
  • There is no spiritual void — if the angels of God are not encompassing a life, something else is.

"If you're not spiritually sharp, demons will build a camp around your life. They will not enter you because they know if they enter you, you can catch them."

The Hierarchy of Evil Spirits

  • Devils are the highest class — they are Satan himself and the princes of hell, whose primary assignment is to produce doctrines, cultures, and systems that entire populations live by.
  • Seducing spirits execute the doctrines of devils — they are the agents that lure people into false belief and away from the faith; they are distinct from devils (1 Timothy 4:1).
  • Unclean spirits are the most common and mobile class — they are not bound regionally like stronger powers and continuously circulate around people's lives.

"Devils, their primary objective is to give you doctrines that you should live by. They write the law that you should live by. That is why good is now considered evil and evil is considered good."

Unclean Spirits and Sickness: The First Sign

  • The nature of unclean spirits is primarily to cause sickness — specifically diseases and conditions associated with the need for cleansing.
  • When an unclean spirit has been around a person's vicinity, the first visible sign is often chronic skin problems — conditions that medicine cannot resolve.
  • The spiritual agenda behind skin afflictions is to make the person see themselves as worthless, unlovable, and ugly — the defilement is as much psychological as it is physical.

"You can rebuke what was put on your skin by a spirit. That spirit will not be inside you. That's why you go for deliverance and nothing ever comes out. You don't even manifest because that spirit is not in you. That spirit is around you."

Unclean Spirits and Defiled Associations: The Second Sign

  • Unclean spirits actively bring defiled people and environments into a person's circle — because they thrive where uncleanness is and must create that atmosphere around them to settle.
  • Consuming violent content, foul language, and morally degrading material makes the soul unclean and creates an atmosphere in which unclean spirits are at home.
  • Forgiveness is only the first step when sin has created defilement — cleansing and sanctification must follow, because a person's way of living can make their life a dwelling place for unclean spirits.

"You should be so pure that when people want to curse around you, they feel uncomfortable, not because you told them not to. You just don't engage that way."

Unclean Spirits and Isolation: The Third Sign

  • Unclean spirits are destroyers of relationships — they create misunderstandings and manufacture reasons for people to withdraw from one another in order to isolate their target.
  • Gossip is one of the primary tools unclean spirits use to ruin relationships — it is not merely a human failing but a spiritually engineered weapon.
  • The Gadarene man who was possessed by unclean spirits lived in isolation among the tombs — not always violently manifesting, but cut off from all human relationship, which is the hallmark of this spirit's work.

"Unclean spirits love to destroy relationships. And many times they use gossip to ruin relationships."

Unclean Spirits and Self-Destruction: The Fourth Sign

  • Self-cutting, self-harm, and addictive behaviors are manifestations of unclean spirits operating around a person's life — the spirit's goal is to destroy the body from the outside in.
  • Unclean spirits create environments of emotional collapse and hopelessness in which addictions take root — whether to drugs, alcohol, pornography, or other destructive patterns.
  • People who try a substance once and immediately become addicted were captured by an unclean spirit that had already built an atmosphere around them — the environment, not just the substance, is the trap.

"Unclean spirits are the ones that give you addictive behaviors."

Unclean Spirits and Distorted Self-Image: The Fifth Sign

  • When a person consistently looks at themselves and sees only ugliness, worthlessness, or inadequacy — to the point of compulsively altering their appearance — an unclean spirit has created that atmosphere.
  • The role model God has established for what a believer should look like is Christ — the unclean spirit substitutes that standard with an unattainable and shame-producing comparison to other people.
  • The spirit's goal through distorted self-image is not merely vanity but the destruction of the person's sense of God-given worth and identity.

"That when you look at yourself in the mirror, you don't see yourself. You just see ugly bad, this is an unclean spirit."

Unclean Spirits and Unclean Thoughts: The Sixth Sign

  • Spirits communicate primarily through thoughts — it is the primary language of the spirit realm, used by both God and demonic spirits.
  • Unclean spirits place unclean thoughts into the mind of a person who does not realize that an external being is speaking to them — the person believes the thought is their own.
  • Peter's two experiences with thoughts — one from God the Father revealing Jesus' identity, and one from the devil urging Jesus away from the cross — demonstrate that the same person can receive thoughts from both God and demonic spirits without awareness of the source.

"That's an unclean spirit talking to you. But he's making you, because he's a, the spirit is aware, you're not aware that he's talking to you. So he's using it as a manipulation too."

Guarding the Mind Against Unclean Spirits

  • Every thought that lifts itself above the Word of God must be brought captive — because someone is actively speaking to you, not for your benefit, but to execute their will through you.
  • Demons do not know a person's thoughts — only God does — but they speak to the mind in order to direct behavior toward uncleanness.
  • The mind is the primary battlefield for unclean spirits operating around a person's life — this is why Scripture commands the renewing of the mind, not only deliverance from spirits within.

"It is important to guard your mind. Bring every thought captive that lifts itself above what the word of God because somebody is talking to you."

Key Definitions

Pneuma Akatharton (Unclean Spirit) — A class of evil spirit defined by moral and spiritual filth whose primary assignment is to defile the body, corrupt relationships, distort self-image, and corrupt the mind of people in their vicinity — operating around people rather than necessarily inside them.

Possession — A condition in which an evil spirit dwells inside a person, producing visible manifestation during deliverance and directly tormenting the host from within.

Presence (Demonic) — A condition in which an evil spirit operates in the atmosphere or vicinity around a person without entering them — building a spiritual camp that produces sickness, isolation, defilement, and addictive behaviors while remaining undetected through normal deliverance methods.

Devils — The highest class of evil spiritual beings: Satan himself and the princes of hell, whose primary assignment is to produce doctrines, cultures, laws, and ideological systems that entire populations live by.

Seducing Spirits — A class of evil spirit distinct from devils that executes the doctrines of devils by luring people away from the faith and into false belief systems; referenced explicitly in 1 Timothy 4:1 as separate from devils.

Cleansing — The step that follows forgiveness in God's process of restoring a person — the removal of the defilement and uncleanness left upon a person by sin or spiritual exposure, distinct from forgiveness (which addresses guilt) and sanctification (which addresses ongoing holiness).

Key Takeaways

  • Spiritual progress is measured by destiny fulfilled, not possessions gained — the enemy's goal is not to make you poor but to stop you from completing what God set you on earth to do.
  • Most believers need deliverance from what is around them, not inside them — recognizing the difference between possession and presence fundamentally changes how a believer prays and pursues freedom.
  • Unclean spirits reveal themselves through consistent patterns — chronic skin conditions, defiled relationships, addictive behaviors, self-harm, distorted self-image, love of dead things, and unclean thoughts are all recognizable signs that this class of spirit is operating in a person's vicinity.
  • The mind is the primary point of attack for unclean spirits operating around a life — because they communicate through thoughts, guarding the mind and bringing every thought captive is not optional but essential.
  • Forgiveness, cleansing, and sanctification are three distinct works — asking God only for forgiveness without pursuing cleansing and sanctification leaves the residue of defilement in place, which sustains the atmosphere unclean spirits need to operate.

Reflection Questions

  1. Looking at the six signs of unclean spirits operating around a life — chronic skin issues, defiled associations, destroyed relationships, addictive behaviors, distorted self-image, and unclean thoughts — which of these have you normalized in your own life without recognizing their spiritual source?
  2. Have you been seeking deliverance from something inside you when the real battle may be an unclean spirit operating around you — and how would that shift change the way you pray?
  3. What content, relationships, or environments are currently creating an atmosphere of uncleanness around your life — and what would it cost you to remove them?
  4. When you examine the thoughts that pass through your mind — especially those that shock or disturb you — are you actively bringing them captive, or have you been accepting them as your own without questioning their source?
  5. God's process of restoration moves through forgiveness, cleansing, and sanctification — where in that process have you stopped, and what would it look like to pursue all three this week?

Prayers and Declarations

Say this after me:

"Lord Jesus, because of the blood of Jesus — cleanse me, cleanse me, all I beg You, cleanse me, Father, from every uncleanness that is upon my body."
