Spiritual Ears: Hearing the Voice of the Holy Spirit vs. the Voice of Spirits

Spiritual Ears: Hearing the Voice of the Holy Spirit vs. the Voice of Spirits

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 18 August 2023

Not everyone who hears voices hears from God — and learning the difference is the most important thing a believer can do.

There is a critical distinction between hearing spirits and hearing the Spirit of God — and most of the church has never been taught the difference. This teaching confronts wrong doctrine, false spiritual sensitivity, and the enemy's primary weapon of wasted time, while anchoring the believer in the true sound of the Shepherd's voice.

Teaching Overview

  1. Your presence in God's presence is a divine invitation, not a human choice — and that privilege carries weight.
  2. The elect of God cannot be deceived, but they can hold wrong doctrine — and the distinction matters eternally.
  3. Hearing spirits is not the same as hearing the Holy Spirit — one is carnal, the other is spiritual.
  4. The Holy Spirit leads only to rest, green pastures, still waters, and protection — never to gossip, fear, or division.
  5. The greatest weapon of the enemy is not death but delay — wasting your time is how the devil derails your destiny.

God Is the God of Resurrection and Transformation

  • God does not only resurrect what has died — He sometimes crucifies what was being built on the wrong foundation so He can build something far greater.
  • What God resurrects will bloom farther, wider, and brighter than anything the believer could have constructed on their own.
  • God does not do small things — He tears down shacks to build mansions.

"You were building a shack, but he's gonna build you a huge mansion."

"What He brings back for you will bloom farther and wider and brighter."

Your Presence in God's Presence Is a Divine Invitation

  • No one arrives in the presence of God by accident or by their own spiritual initiative — they are invited by heaven itself.
  • God cannot force salvation upon anyone, but when He has favored a person, He commands angels to orchestrate their path into His presence.
  • The feet of a believer stepping into God's house is a privilege — it means heaven has acted on their behalf.

"Your presence in His presence is ordained."

"It means heaven has invited you. Your feet stepping into his house. Is a privilege."

"Your blessing is one of one. It will never be a duplicate."

The Elect Can Have Wrong Doctrine — Not Deception

  • The Bible's warning about end-time deception — "if it were possible" — explicitly establishes that it is impossible for God's elect to be deceived.
  • Wrong doctrine is not deception — it is the use of past revelation as though it were present truth, practiced by people who remain genuinely saved.
  • The New Testament does not begin in Matthew — it begins in Acts, at the death of Christ, when the New Covenant came into force.

"The elect can have the wrong doctrine, not deception."

"The New Testament begins in the book of Acts. When he dies, the New Testament begins."

"Jesus never looked at the Pharisees and said you are deceived. He said you have the wrong doctrine."

Wrong Doctrine About God's Voice and God's Healing

  • The claim that God only speaks through Scripture is itself a wrong doctrine — because every Scripture in existence came by God speaking to men.
  • By His stripes, believers are healed — this is not subject to God's timing or preference; it is a settled covenant fact.
  • Remaining in wrong doctrine on healing will keep a believer sick while they wait for God to decide what He has already decided.

"God only speaks through the scriptures. That is a wrong doctrine by itself because the scriptures you have came by God speaking to men."

"By his stripes we are healed. It is not optional."

"It is not a debate, it is not an option, it is a settled fact."

Hearing Spirits Is Not Hearing the Holy Spirit

  • The Spirit of God is the Creator of all spirits — His dimension of speech does not operate on the same frequency as the spirits He created.
  • To hear God, a believer must be in God — "in Him we move, in Him we have our being" — because you cannot hear God outside of God.
  • Spiritual growth is measured not by sensitivity to spirits, but by likeness to the Son of God.

"The voice of the Holy Spirit is different from the voice of spirits."

"You don't hear God outside of God, you can only hear God inside of God."

"Hearing spirits doesn't make you spiritual. Being human is to be like God, meaning being human is spiritual."

Carnality, Spirituality, and Satan's True Nature

  • Carnality is not defined by being human — man was made in the image and likeness of God, which makes being truly human a spiritual condition.
  • Satan is a spiritual being, yet God declared him carnal — cast to the dust for his obsession with material beauty and self-glorification.
  • When a believer hears spirits, they are communicating with beings operating in the same carnal dimension — which makes the act carnal, not spiritual.

"You hearing spirits? Doesn't make you spiritual, it actually makes you carnal."

"When you are spiritual, you begin to hear what is happening in heaven."

The Holy Spirit Leads Only to Rest — Never to Fear or Division

  • The Holy Spirit leads the sheep exclusively toward still waters, green pastures, rest, comfort, and protection — not toward conflict or suspicion.
  • When a voice reveals that someone is a witch without giving the hearer power to deliver them, that voice is a demon — not the Holy Spirit.
  • A life marked by constant fighting and broken relationships, with no rest or green pastures, is evidence of demonic leading — not the Spirit of God.

"When the Holy Spirit speaks to you, he does not speak to you about your neighbor, because that is called gossip."

"He only speaks to lead you to your place of rest."

"It means there is a demon leading you, not the Holy Spirit."

The Enemy's Greatest Weapon Is Wasted Time

  • The devil has no power to take anyone's life — his primary weapon is delay, using wasted time to prevent a believer from fulfilling their destiny.
  • Every person whose destiny is delayed carries a cost beyond themselves — there are souls who will suffer because of the delay of someone else's breakthrough.
  • The enemy targets marriages, careers, and faith — not because he can destroy them, but because he knows what God has already spoken over them.

"The greatest trick of the enemy is to waste your time."

"The devil is under our feet. That is why he's called the Great Deceiver, not the Great Killer."

"If I can delay you, I have overpowered you."

Spiritual Ears Produce Automatic Faith

  • Jesus declared that the word of Isaiah was "fulfilled in your ears" — meaning that possessing spiritual ears produces faith automatically, without striving.
  • Those who struggle to believe are struggling because they are trying to hear with natural ears what can only be received by the spirit man.
  • God does not hide His blessing — He sets it on a candlestick, for nothing He does is meant to be concealed.

"If you have the ears of the Spirit, faith is automatic."

"You are struggling with faith because you don't have ears of the spirit."

Key Definitions

Wrong Doctrine — Using biblical revelation that belongs to a past covenant era as though it were present truth; the condition of the elect who have stopped growing, not of those who have been deceived.

Deception — A lie given directly by Satan for the purpose of destruction; the Bible establishes that it is impossible for God's elect to be deceived.

Spirituality — Not sensitivity to spiritual beings, but likeness to the Son of God — resembling Him in nature, hearing, and conduct.

Carnality — Not the condition of being human, but the condition of being consumed by material things or the sin nature; Satan himself is classified as carnal by God.

Hearing in the Spirit — Hearing within the realm of God Himself — only possible for one who is in God, because you cannot hear God outside of God.

Present Truth — Revelation that applies to the current covenant age, as opposed to past truth, which was valid in an earlier dispensation but has been superseded by the work of Christ.

Key Takeaways

  • Your presence in God's presence is a divine invitation, not a human decision — understanding this transforms how a believer approaches worship, prayer, and the house of God.
  • The elect can hold wrong doctrine even while remaining saved — this distinction protects believers from false accusation and opens the door to genuine theological growth.
  • Hearing spirits and hearing the Holy Spirit are not the same thing — confusing the two is the root cause of fear, wasted years, broken relationships, and stagnant faith.
  • The Holy Spirit leads only to rest, provision, and protection — any voice that produces fear, accusation, or division is not the Shepherd's voice.
  • The enemy's greatest weapon is delay — recognizing this exposes spiritual warfare for what it is and calls the believer to urgency in pursuing their God-given destiny.

Reflection Questions

  1. When you consider that your presence in God's presence is a divine invitation, how does that change the weight you give to your time in worship, prayer, and the house of God?
  2. Are there areas of your theology — about healing, God's voice, or spiritual gifts — where you may be operating in past truth rather than present truth? What would it take to examine them honestly?
  3. When voices come to you about other people — their sins, their threats to you, what they have done — do you test those voices against the fruit the Holy Spirit produces: rest, still waters, green pastures, protection? What has the fruit of those voices actually been in your life?
  4. Where in your life do you see the pattern of delay — in your faith, your relationships, your career, your calling? What would change if you recognized that delay as the enemy's primary weapon rather than God's timing?
  5. If faith is automatic when you have spiritual ears, what does your current struggle to believe reveal about how you are trying to hear — and what would it look like to stop striving and begin receiving?

Prayers and Declarations

Opening Prayer

"We thank you Jesus. We love you Jesus. We thank you that you dwell in this house. For all the miracles you perform in this house. For all the people that you touch in this house. We thank you that your tangible presence is in this house. It's in this room. Father everything that these people came for, may they receive it. May they receive it Father. May not one person that came in those doors leave the same. You are the only thing that remains the same. We thank you Jesus we just want to bask in your presence Lord. We want to receive everything that you have for us, everything that you're telling us Lord and we surrender all of our fears, all of our anxieties, all of our preconceived ideas that are not of you. Father, we lay them at your feet right now."

Lift your hands to heaven and say this:

"Father, I know you have invited me. It is divine that I am in your presence. It is divine that I am in your presence. You commanded your angels to bring me into your presence. You commanded your angels to bring me into your presence. And your Spirit worked on my heart. And your Spirit worked on my heart. To plant me in this place. To establish me in this place. Father you have set a table for me. Father you have set a table for me today in the name of Jesus. I receive it. I receive what is on the table."

Closing Prayer

"Father, we thank you in the name of Jesus for this beautiful evening. May your name be glorified, may your name be lifted, Father sanctify us and purify us for the sake of your Son Jesus that we may be useful in your hands. Bless us this evening, transform us this evening, cause us to see your glory again this evening. Father deliver us, set us free from the bondage of the enemy that we may glorify your name again. For those who are at home and those who are here, Father, may your invisible hand, your ever-present hand, touch us that we may become all you want us to be. In the name of your holy Son, your only Son Jesus Christ, and the whole church said Amen!"
