The Art of Effective Prayer: How to Obtain Mercy and Be Heard by God
Answered prayer is not about how long you pray, but about understanding the heavenly technology through which God inclines His ear toward you.
The key to fulfillment in life is understanding how to have an effective prayer life where you receive answers from God. One of the most frustrating things in life is not understanding why your prayers are not answered. The principles covered in this teaching, if understood and applied, will ensure you never go a day without hearing from God or receiving an answer from God.
Teaching Overview
- There is a three-step process to prayer: preparation of yourself, God hearing you, and God answering you.
Key Distinctions
| Anointing | Prayer | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A divine empowerment for a specific assignment | A heavenly technology for obtaining mercy and accessing God |
| Its purpose | To equip you to fulfill a God-given task | To draw strength, power, and change from God |
| Its connection to answered prayer | Has nothing to do with getting prayers answered | Is the direct medium through which God hears and answers |
| Who it follows | Given for assignment and ministry function | Available to every believer who learns to obtain mercy |
| Justice | Mercy | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | God rendering what is deserved based on righteousness | God granting favor to the guilty who cannot justify themselves |
| Who qualifies for it | The justified — those who can stand before God in righteousness | The guilty — every living person before God |
| Role in prayer | Not what we approach God for — we are not justified | The only ground on which we can approach God and be heard |
| What it produces | Vindication or judgment | Healing, answers, and divine intervention |
| Justification | Guilt | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Being declared righteous before God | The universal condition of every living person before God |
| How it relates to prayer | If you were justified, you would need justice, not mercy | Because we are guilty, mercy is the only pathway to God hearing us |
| Who possesses it | Only God can justify — it is not something we can claim ourselves | The default position of all who approach God in prayer |
| The danger of assuming it | Leads to self-justification in prayer — which God does not honor | Acknowledgment of it opens the door to mercy |
| Prayer | Speaking in Tongues | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The act of approaching God to obtain mercy and receive answers | A sign that follows those who believe on the Lord Jesus |
| Its category | Heavenly technology — the medium of exchange between man and God | One of the basic signs of a believer listed in Mark 16 |
| What determines its effectiveness | Understanding and applying the principles of prayer | Belief in the Lord Jesus — it is a sign, not a prayer method |
| Its connection to results | Results depend on God hearing you — which requires approaching correctly | Not a substitute for understood prayer |
| Heathens | Believers who pray correctly | |
|---|---|---|
| Their approach to prayer | Think that much speaking will cause God to hear them | Understand that mercy, not words, is what causes God to hear |
| How God views them | As those who do not know Him | As those approaching the throne of grace to obtain mercy |
| Their results | No answered prayer despite extensive speaking | God hears them, and if God hears them, God will answer them |
| What drives their prayer | Verbal volume and repetition | Understanding of the heavenly technology of prayer |
| The Presence of God | The Hearing of God | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | God's omnipresence — He is always with us whether we feel it or not | God's intentional attention and response directed toward a specific person |
| Its availability | Universal — even if you make your bed in hell, He is there | Conditional — accessed through the correct posture of prayer |
| How it relates to answered prayer | Does not in itself guarantee answered prayer | If God hears you, He will answer you — hearing guarantees a response |
| How it is misunderstood | Believers often equate feeling God's presence with being heard by God | Many pray assuming God heard them, when God never inclined His ear |
| Anointing for Assignment | Anointing for Answered Prayer | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Divine empowerment given to fulfill a specific God-given task | A concept that does not exist — anointing and answered prayer are unrelated |
| Its purpose | To equip you for ministry and the work God has called you to | N/A |
| Its connection to prayer results | None — anointing does not cause God to hear or answer prayer | The premise is false; anointing has nothing to do with answered prayers |
| What actually produces answered prayer | N/A | Learning to obtain mercy through the correct posture of prayer |
The Three-Step Process of Prayer
- Prayer is not a single act but a process: you must first prepare yourself, then God must hear you, and only then does God answer you.
- Most believers skip the first step entirely, meaning God never hears them — and God will not hear you and then ignore you.
- If God hears your prayer, your situation is already solved — getting His attention is the answered prayer.
"God will not hear you and ignore you. God hearing you is an answered prayer because we pray for him to hear us. If we can get his attention, then our situation is already solved."
Prayer Is a Heavenly Technology
- Prayer is not a devotional ritual but a science — a heavenly technology with specific principles that must be understood and applied.
- Every religious group on earth prays, but most receive no answered prayers because they have mishandled the technology of prayer.
- The medium of prayer is how the invisible world is accessed — even those practicing sorcery must interact with the entities they call upon through a form of this technology.
"Prayer is a science. It's heavenly technology. That permits you to draw strength, to draw power, to receive changes. It's the medium of exchange — understand prayer, they can never get any results from it. It's impossible."
The Anointing Does Not Get Prayers Answered
- When someone prays thirty seconds and receives what another has been fasting and interceding for over months, the reason is not superior anointing.
- The anointing is for assignment — it has nothing to do with answered prayer.
- God knows everyone; the issue is not whether He recognizes you as His child, but whether He can hear you.
"The anointing doesn't get prayers answered. Because anointing is for assignment — anointing has nothing to do with the answered prayers."
The Condition of Every Person Before God
- Psalm 143 reveals that no one living can be justified before God — this is the default condition of every person who approaches Him in prayer.
- Because every person praying is guilty, a guilty person does not receive advantages; there is a specific path God ordained for the guilty to appeal to Him.
- The pathway God ordained is through mercy — approaching God for mercy, not justice.
"The default of prayer is that God doesn't listen to anybody. No one living can be justified."
The Art of Receiving Mercy
- The act of prayer is not the act of receiving blessing or justice — it is the act of receiving mercy.
- Only the guilty need mercy; the justified need justice — and since no one living is justified before God, mercy is the only ground on which we can approach Him.
- Someone who has become skilled in prayer is someone who has learned to obtain mercy from God; it is not about many words.
"The act of prayer is the act of receiving mercy. The art of prayer is the art of receiving mercy, not justice."
"Somebody who has become skilled in prayer is somebody that has learned to obtain mercy from the Lord. If you want to know you have become a prayer warrior, it's not about many words. But if you can't obtain mercy, all that is pointless. Because the art of prayer is the art of receiving mercy."
The Danger of Much Speaking
- God explicitly warns in Matthew 6 not to pray like the heathen who think their much speaking will cause God to hear them.
- Those who believe that lengthy or eloquent prayer produces results are, in God's view, no different from heathens — it means they do not know Him.
- Vocabulary and articulation in prayer are for the ears of men, not for God.
"Don't be like the heathen who think by their much speaking, they will be heard. That means most people think saying too much means God will hear them. And do you know what God calls those people? Heathens."
The Posture of Approaching God in Prayer
- The correct posture of prayer begins with acknowledging guilt and unworthiness before God — not self-justification.
- Approaching God with self-justification — declaring your own righteousness or comparing yourself favorably to others — is the language God does not honor.
- Humility, the acknowledgment that no one deserves an audience with God, is the posture that opens the door to mercy.
"Nobody deserves to be heard by God. Nobody deserves an audience with God."
God Is Open to Questions
- God invites questions — "Ask and you shall receive" — and has never forbidden His people from seeking understanding.
- The inability to reason or question outside of what one has been told is a spiritual limitation, not a sign of devotion.
- When you are in confusion, in need, or seeking direction, God says ask — and He is ready to show us anything.
"God is not against questions. When you are in confusion, God says ask. When you are in need, ask. When you want to have direction, ask. The Lord didn't say you can only ask about this. He says ask anything."
What It Means for God to "Hear" You
- When Scripture speaks of God hearing prayer, it does not refer merely to His omniscience — He can hear everything — but to His intentional response to what aligns with Him.
- God's omnipresence does not guarantee His response; His hearing is a specific, directed act of attention and answer.
- When God says "I will be with you," He is saying His ear is open — His awareness and attention are directed toward you.
"When God says, I will be with you, He's saying my ear."
Key Definitions
Prayer — Heavenly technology and the medium of exchange between man and the invisible world, through which a guilty person appeals to God for mercy in order to be heard and answered.
Mercy — The only ground on which any living person can approach God, since no one living can be justified before Him; it is what the guilty receive when they approach God correctly.
Anointing — Divine empowerment given for a specific assignment; it has nothing to do with causing God to hear or answer prayer.
Justified / Justification — Being declared righteous before God; because no one living is justified before Him, no one has the right to approach God demanding justice or answers as though they have earned them.
Intercessor — Not someone who prays loudly or extensively, but someone who has learned to obtain mercy on behalf of others who cannot obtain it themselves — a representative who appeals to God on another's behalf.
Heathens (in the context of prayer) — God's designation for those who believe their much speaking will cause Him to hear them; in His view, using many words as a strategy for answered prayer means you do not know Him.
Key Takeaways
- Prayer is a three-step process: preparation, God hearing, God answering — understanding this process is what separates those who receive answers from those who do not.
- Anointing is for assignment, not for answered prayer — confusing the two leads believers to chase the wrong thing when seeking results from God.
- No one living can be justified before God, so mercy is the only pathway to being heard — this means the posture of humility and guilt is not weakness; it is the correct spiritual technology.
- God will never hear you and ignore you — if you have genuinely obtained God's ear, your answer is already guaranteed.
- The art of prayer is the art of receiving mercy, not the art of many words — becoming a true prayer warrior means learning to obtain mercy, not mastering eloquent language or prayer duration.
Reflection Questions
- Have you been approaching God in prayer expecting to be heard because of your efforts — fasting, duration, or speaking extensively — rather than because of mercy? What would it look like to change that posture today?
- Consider the distinction between anointing for assignment and effective prayer. Have you ever mistakenly attributed answered or unanswered prayer to someone's anointing rather than to whether God heard them? How does this teaching change how you seek results?
- If the default condition before God is that no one living can be justified, how does your current prayer life reflect an acknowledgment of that reality? Are you approaching God with the language of justification or the language of humility?
- The teaching states that God hearing you is itself an answered prayer — that if He hears you, He will not ignore you. What specific area of your life have you been "shouting toward Mississippi" — praying without the preparation that causes God to hear?
- What would change in your prayer life this week if you shifted your entire focus from the number of words, the number of days fasted, and the intensity of your voice — to understanding how to obtain mercy from God?
Prayers and Declarations
Opening Prayer
"Thank you for your mercy and your grace through your Son Jesus. Thank you for the opportunity to be creative again. It's been a long road but I am grateful Lord. Nulled me, shaped me into the image of your Son Jesus. Save me and rescue me from my weaknesses that I may be a witness for your kingdom. Bless us all, all Lord, as we partake of this. Glorify yourself now."
Opening Blessing Over Congregation
"May God bless you all in the name of Jesus and I pray that the masses of God will find you wherever you are and I pray that the goodness of God will continually be revealed in your life and that you will receive His goodness consistently."
