The Dead Soul: Why Life Without Assignment Is Already Dying
Your soul is not guaranteed to live simply because you are breathing — assignment is the difference between existing and truly living.
The path God ordains for every believer is not a physical path but a spiritual one that reflects outward. Yet most people attempt to adjust their lives from the outside in — changing behavior, appearance, and circumstance — while the inward man remains untouched. This teaching cuts to the core of what it means to truly live: not merely to breathe, to acquire, or to appear good, but to carry the life of God within you and to walk in the assignment for which your soul was made.
Teaching Overview
- You have no capacity to manage knowledge in order for it to be used correctly because you have no life.
- The true path of transformation is spiritual before it is physical — adjusting the outward man without touching the inward man is pretending.
- The soul is the real you, and only the soul is susceptible to death — a soul without assignment is already dying.
- Adam and Eve were created in the image of God but never possessed the life of God — the tree of life existed precisely because they were not yet eternal.
- There is a critical difference between eternal life, everlasting life, and life more abundantly — and between calling and career, knowledge and wisdom, creation and formation.
Key Distinctions
| Spirit | Soul | Body | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | The image of God in you; the part of God placed within you | The real you; the seat of selfhood, will, and inner life | The earthly form animated by instinct |
| Susceptible to death? | No — the spirit does not die | Yes — only the soul is susceptible to death | Physical death, but driven by instinct independent of soul maturity |
| What drives it | The Spirit of God impresses truth upon it | Receives impressions from the spirit; shaped by the flesh (earthly nature) | Instinct — operates independently of soul development |
| Role in salvation | God speaks to the spirit; the spirit impresses it on the soul | Must be saved, transformed, and aligned with God's life | The outward man — secondary; changes naturally when the inner man is adjusted |
| What happens at death | Returns to God who gave it | Faces judgment — the soul is the real you that is held accountable | Returns to dust |
| Spiritual Path | Physical Path | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The path God ordained, reflected outward through spiritual alignment | External adjustments to behavior, appearance, and circumstance |
| How change happens | God adjusts you spiritually; physical life naturally follows | Changing outside without touching inside |
| What it produces | Genuine transformation | Pretending — dressing the outward man while neglecting the inward |
| Paul's instruction | Adorn the hidden man of the heart | Not the plaiting of hair, not gold and silver |
| Living Soul (First Adam) | Life-Giving Spirit (Second Adam — Jesus) | |
|---|---|---|
| What drives life | Soul — life is driven by the soul | Spirit — life is driven by the Spirit |
| How formed | God breathed into Adam; he became a living soul | Born of the Holy Spirit; a life-giving spirit from the womb |
| Full of God at birth? | No — had the image of God but not the life of God | Yes — full of the Holy Spirit from conception |
| Vulnerable to temptation? | Yes — had no life of God to recognize or resist Satan | No — spiritual life sustained and defined His entire ministry |
| Eternal Life | Everlasting Life | Life More Abundantly | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | The uncreated life of God imparted to the believer | Life that has a beginning but continues without end | Fullness of life experienced in assignment and purpose |
| Who has it | Those who have truly received Christ Jesus in truth | Angelic and created beings — e.g. Satan has everlasting life, not eternal | Believers walking in their God-given assignment |
| Time and origin | Eternal — no beginning, no end; outside of time | Has a beginning; continues to last | Available in this life through obedience and purpose |
| What it enables | Capacity to be with God as if never created; will comprehend God far more fully | Long continuation of existence | Fruitfulness, fulfillment, and accomplishment of divine assignment |
| Knowledge | Wisdom | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Information and understanding of truths — good and evil | The application of knowledge |
| Can it be corrupted? | No — there is no evil knowledge; knowledge is just knowledge | Yes — Satan corrupted his own wisdom; witchcraft is perverted heavenly wisdom |
| Relationship to each other | Foundation — wisdom requires knowledge | Wisdom is the beginning of knowledge; you cannot have wisdom without knowledge |
| Example | Solomon knew good and evil | Solomon's wisdom allowed him to carry that knowledge without being destroyed by it — it was his flesh and lusts that corrupted him |
| Creation (Genesis 1) | Formation (Genesis 2) | |
|---|---|---|
| What happened | God created man — spirit — male and female together | God formed man from the dust of the earth and breathed into him |
| What was made | Two spirits: one male, one female | The body and soul of Adam — man became a living soul |
| Eve's origin | Eve's spirit was already created inside Adam | God formed her body from a piece of Adam's flesh — her spirit was already present |
| Result | Spiritual beings made in the image and likeness of God | A living soul — not yet possessing the life of God |
| Being Good | Being Transformed | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Moral behavior aligned with external standards | Inward change wrought by the Spirit of God on the soul |
| Who can do it | Anyone — good people exist in the world who are not believers | Only possible through the Spirit; requires digging deeper beyond the flesh |
| Does it lead to heaven? | No — the outward man does not get you to heaven | The inward man, adjusted by the spirit man, is what matters to God |
| What it changes | Outward conduct | The hidden man of the heart |
| Evil (Change of Mind / Repentance) | Evil (Bad / Diabolical) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it means | A departure from what was intended; a change in course or mind — e.g. Moses told God to "repent of this evil" | Morally corrupt, sinister, or demonic in nature |
| Biblical example | God "repented of the evil" He thought to do to Israel (Exodus 32); "I the Lord have created both good and evil" (Isaiah 45:7) | Commonly assumed meaning — but this is not the primary meaning in key passages |
| Implication | God repenting of evil does not make God evil — it means He changed the course of action | Misunderstanding this meaning causes believers to misread God's nature and character |
| Calling | Career | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The God-given assignment for which your soul was made | A professional path pursued for livelihood or ambition |
| Source | Ordained by God before birth | Chosen or pursued by the individual |
| Fulfillment | Your life is only fulfilled when you accomplish your assignment | Can be accomplished without fulfillment — knowledge without anointing |
| Example | Joseph's assignment: to preserve his family and the covenant people of God | Joseph as Prince of Egypt — successful, prosperous, yet disconnected from his true purpose for years |
| Adam's Assignment | Joseph's Assignment | |
|---|---|---|
| What it was | Be fruitful, multiply, replenish and fill the earth with the life of God | Preserve his family and the covenant people of God through famine |
| Was it fulfilled? | No — Adam was removed from the place of his assignment; death entered the world | Yes — but only after years of disconnection from his true purpose |
| Effect of missing it | Soul torment — a thousand years of living without accomplishing what he was made for | Hidden grief — he had an appearance of joy, yet cried so loudly the palace could hear him |
| What restored it | God's redemptive plan through Christ | God mercifully redirected Joseph's family to him — it was God who did it, not Joseph |
Spiritual Transformation Begins Inward
- The path God ordains is not a physical path — it is a spiritual path that is reflected physically.
- Changing the physical life without touching the spiritual life is pretending — it is dressing the outward man while neglecting the inward man.
- When God adjusts you spiritually, your physical life naturally changes as a consequence.
"The most important thing you can ever do for yourself is dress the man inside, not the man outside."
The Spiritual Life of Jesus
- Jesus was made of no reputation outwardly — there was nothing physically credible about Him — yet He could never be discredited spiritually.
- Spiritual life is the only life that sustains the mortal body — ignorance of spiritual life places a person at risk even of the resurrection.
- Jesus did not come to save the body — He came to save the soul so that the mortal body can be revived and a close walk with God maintained.
"Spiritual life is the only life that even sustains your mortal body."
Creation and Formation of Man
- Genesis 1 records the creation of man's spirit — God created male and female together; Eve's spirit existed inside Adam from the beginning.
- Genesis 2 records the formation of man's body and soul — God formed Adam from the dust of the earth, breathed into him, and man became a living soul.
- Eve was not created in Genesis 2 — God formed her body from Adam's flesh because her spirit was already created; the formation required no new creation.
The Living Soul and the Life-Giving Spirit
- Adam was a living soul — the life of Adam was driven by the soul; Jesus was a life-giving spirit — the life of Jesus was driven by the Spirit.
- When God breathed into Mary, He did not make a living soul but a living spirit who had a soul — Jesus was a life-giving spirit from the womb.
- The soul is the real you; the spirit is the image of God in you that makes the virtues of God manifest — God speaks to your spirit, and your spirit impresses it on your soul.
"The life of Adam was driven by the soul. The life of Jesus was driven by the spirit."
Knowledge, Wisdom, and the Tree of Knowledge
- The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was not a bad tree — God has never created anything bad, and there is no evil knowledge; knowledge is just knowledge.
- Every believer who is ignorant of demonic knowledge is vulnerable — knowing what the enemy does does not mean doing what the enemy does; it means knowing how to strike and how to stop them.
- Witchcraft is perverted heavenly wisdom — Satan did not corrupt God's wisdom, he corrupted his own; understanding perversion is necessary to help those bound by it.
"There are no solutions in the flesh, only in the Spirit and by the Spirit of God."
Understanding Evil in Context
- The word evil does not mean diabolical or bad in every biblical usage — context and translation determine meaning, and believers must understand this or they will misread God's nature.
- When Moses told God to "repent of this evil," evil meant the course of action God intended — and God changed His mind; this does not make God evil.
- The word lust does not inherently mean sin — it means intense desire; the spirit lusts after the flesh and the flesh lusts after the spirit, and not every desire of the flesh is corrupt.
"This God you serve is not your uncle."
"You must understand context."
Adam and Eve Had the Image of God But Not the Life of God
- Adam and Eve were created in the image and likeness of God but never possessed the life of God — the tree of life existed in the garden because they were not yet eternal.
- They were not dying in the garden, but they were vulnerable to death — the only safeguard between them and death was the tree of life.
- If they had possessed the life of God, Satan could never have approached them — they would have known the mind of God and recognized who he was.
"God created man for eternity. But Adam and Eve did not have the life of God."
The Problem of Knowledge Without Life
- Adam and Eve had knowledge of good and evil but no life of God to manage that knowledge correctly — life purifies, sanctifies, and perfects; without it, knowledge becomes destructive.
- They did not see the value of the tree of life when they were whole — God drove them out because they now desired life while broken, but life would have locked them into their broken condition permanently.
- God does not give His life unless He first begins the process of change — from the moment of confession, His first move is to put His Spirit in the believer to begin transformation.
"When you receive life, life purifies you, life sanctifies you, life perfects you."
Only the Soul Is Susceptible to Death
- Only the soul is susceptible to death — Adam and Eve did not die spiritually, as the spirit does not die; their soul was what died.
- The spirit returns to God who gave it at death — it is the soul that faces punishment because the soul is the real you.
- The word flesh in Scripture does not always mean the body — it means earthly nature, which resides in the soul; this is what Jesus meant when He said "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."
"Only the soul is susceptible to death."
"The spirit doesn't die."
Eternal Life, Everlasting Life, and Life More Abundantly
- Eternal life is the uncreated life of God imparted to believers — it gives the capacity to be with God as though never created, and will expand the believer's comprehension of God beyond what is possible in this life.
- Everlasting life has a beginning but continues without end — Satan possesses everlasting life, not eternal life; if he had eternal life, he could not be destroyed.
- Anything that has a concept of time is not eternal — God is the Ancient of Days, meaning He is more ancient than the concept of days itself.
"There is a big difference between eternal life and everlasting life and life more abundantly."
"You can't kill eternity. Anything that has a concept of time is not eternal."
The Soul Without Assignment Is Already Dying
- The number one sign that your soul is dying is removal from purpose — Adam lived nearly a thousand years after the garden, yet his life was torment because he could not accomplish what he was created to do.
- Your life is only fulfilled when you accomplish your assignment — money, success, and career can coexist with a dying soul if they are not the assignment God ordained.
- Anyone who does not know their assignment is already dying — the soul becomes miserable when life is lived without the fulfillment that only purpose can bring.
"Your life is only fulfilled when you accomplish your assignment."
"Anyone that does not know their assignment, they are already dying."
Joseph: The Gift Outside of Assignment
- Joseph became Prince of Egypt — successful, prosperous, with a family — yet for years he lived completely disconnected from the reason God placed him in Egypt.
- He had an appearance of joy but carried deep pain — when he finally revealed himself to his brothers and understood his assignment, he cried so loudly that even Pharaoh's palace heard him.
- It was not Joseph who reconnected himself to his assignment — it was God who mercifully redirected his family to him; the gift was in him all along, but the assignment had to be restored by God.
"Now I know why I am in Egypt."
"He had an appearance of joy, yet the man had so much pain that when he opened his mouth to cry, even the palace could hear him."
Key Definitions
Living Soul — A being whose life is driven by the soul; what Adam became when God breathed into him — self-aware and self-existent, but not yet possessing the life of God.
Life-Giving Spirit — A being whose life is driven by the Spirit; what Jesus was from the womb — born of the Holy Spirit with the capacity to impart life to others.
Eternal Life — The uncreated life of God imparted to those who truly receive Christ; it carries no beginning and no end, and grants the believer the capacity to be with God as though never created themselves.
Everlasting Life — Life that has a beginning but continues without end; distinct from eternal life — Satan possesses everlasting life, which is why he can ultimately be destroyed.
Evil — As used in key biblical passages, not primarily meaning diabolical or bad, but a departure from intended course; a change of mind or action — as when Moses told God to "repent of this evil," meaning change the course of what He intended to do.
Flesh — Not the physical body, but earthly nature residing in the soul; when Jesus said "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak," He was referring to the soul's earthly nature, not the body.
Assignment — The specific purpose God ordained for a person's soul; the fulfillment of which is the only true source of life satisfaction — distinct from career, which is a professional path pursued without necessarily being God's ordained call.
Wisdom — The application of knowledge; the capacity to carry and rightly use what is known — including knowledge of good and evil — without being corrupted by it.
Key Takeaways
- Transformation must begin inward, not outward — changing external behavior without touching the spirit and soul produces only the appearance of change; God works from the inside out.
- The soul is the real you, and it alone is susceptible to death — understanding the condition of your soul is not optional; if you cannot discern its status, you may be dying without knowing it.
- Adam and Eve had God's image but not God's life — their vulnerability to temptation, their susceptibility to death, and their inability to manage knowledge all stemmed from never having eaten from the tree of life.
- Knowledge without the life of God is dangerous — when knowledge is received apart from the transforming life of God, it cannot be managed correctly; life must come first for knowledge to be rightly applied.
- A soul without assignment is a dying soul — money, success, and career cannot substitute for the specific assignment God ordained; living outside of purpose is not neutral — it is a form of spiritual death.
Reflection Questions
- Are you currently making physical adjustments to your life — changing habits, appearances, or circumstances — while leaving your spiritual life largely untouched? What would it look like to allow God to adjust you from the inside out?
- Can you honestly discern the current condition of your soul? Is your inner life thriving, stagnant, or declining — and what is the evidence either way?
- Like Joseph, is it possible you are living with an appearance of success or joy while carrying unresolved pain about a purpose you have not yet walked in? What has kept you from pursuing or recognizing your true assignment?
- If your life is only fulfilled when you accomplish your assignment, what do you actually believe your assignment is — and are you pursuing it, or have you substituted it with a career, an income, or a role that was never God's design for you?
- Adam had the image of God but not the life of God — and it left him without the capacity to manage what he encountered. In what areas of your life are you operating on knowledge, gifting, or ability that has not yet been submitted to the transforming life of God?
