Absorb Tereo: The Difference Between Hearing God's Word and Keeping It

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 21 February 2025

True spiritual transformation is not produced by emotion, prayer, or blessing alone — it comes only through the deep absorption of God's Word into the ground of your heart.

The Word of God is not meant to pass through you — it is meant to become part of you. There is a critical difference between hearing God's Word, listening to it, and actually keeping it. The Greek word tereo, translated "keep," means to absorb — to take something in so completely that it remains, becomes inseparable from you, and sustains you through every test. This is the standard Jesus set when He said, "He that loves Me keeps My Word."

Teaching Overview

  1. Genuine obedience to God's Word is a product of transformation, which only comes through absorption — not emotion, prayer, fasting, or church attendance alone.
  2. You are responsible for breaking the ground of your own heart so that what God speaks can take root — no laying on of hands, no prophetic word, and no other person can do this for you.
  3. There are two kinds of prophetic words: those that meet your present need and those that tie into your future — only the latter requires absorption and is activated at the right time.
  4. What you absorb from God becomes part of your inner treasure and passes from generation to generation; material blessings expire, but absorbed Word does not.
  5. True belief is not motivation or emotion — it is the state of having absorbed something so deeply that you are driven by it even when nothing around you confirms it.

The Meaning of Tereo — To Absorb

  • The Greek word tereo, translated "keep" in John 14, means to absorb, to hold onto, to retain within you.
  • Jesus did not say "He that loves Me, obeys My words" — He said "He that loves Me, keeps My word," because obedience is a product of transformation, not a standalone command.
  • Just as the body absorbs nutrients from food while expelling the rest, the spirit absorbs the substance of God's Word while the outer form passes through.

"You are not what you eat. You are what you absorb."

The Failure of Hearing Without Absorbing

  • Many people hear the Word, shout over it, declare it their word — but when tests come, they reveal they never kept anything.
  • Transformation does not come through prayer, fasting, church attendance, or proximity to good people alone — it comes only through the ability to absorb.
  • What enters your ear is not yet yours; only what is absorbed into your heart becomes part of you.

"The key is not just to eat. The key is the ability to absorb, because what we eat is simply a conduit of nutrients."

You Are What You Think — Not What You Pray

  • The Bible does not say you are what you pray, or what you heard, or what you believe — it says as a man thinks in his heart, so is he, because what you think is what you absorbed.
  • What you speak may only be what you heard — but you never absorbed it; a person who says "blessed and highly favored" but crumbles under pressure has not absorbed that truth.
  • Faith cannot exist until it is tested, and it cannot withstand testing unless it was first absorbed.

"The Bible only says you are what you think as a man thinketh. So is he because what you think is what you absorbed."

Your Responsibility to Break the Ground

  • Even in the Garden of Eden — the most fertile environment imaginable — nothing grew until a man came to till the ground; the presence of God's Word and blessing does not remove your personal responsibility.
  • No laying on of hands, no prophetic word, and no other person can break the ground of your heart for you — it is your duty alone.
  • God can speak increase, abundance, and promise over your life, but if the ground of your heart is not broken, none of it takes root.

"Nobody will break the ground for you! You are responsible! It is your responsibility to break the ground."

Two Kinds of Prophetic Words

  • There are prophetic words that tie into your present need — these bless you now and encourage you to follow God, but they do not require absorption.
  • There are prophetic words that tie into your future — these must be absorbed because they will only be activated at the right time.
  • When people pursue only present-need words, they receive blessing, become satisfied, and their pursuit of God ends — never absorbing what God truly wanted to deliver.

"There are prophetic words that tie into your future. And there are prophetic words that tie into what you need right now."

The Difference Between God's Hand and God's Heart

  • God's hand is His blessing — material provision, healing, breakthrough; God blesses everyone, including those who are not close to Him, just as rain falls on the good and the evil.
  • God's heart is absorbed through His Word — whoever absorbs the Word of God has received His heart; whoever only receives blessings has received only His hand.
  • The crowd that followed Jesus after the feeding of the five thousand treasured what He gave them, not Him — and when He left, they did not even notice until they were hungry again.

"Did you only receive God's hand or did you receive God's heart? Because whoever absorbs the word of God has received His heart."

Absorption Creates Permanence Across Generations

  • When something is absorbed from God it does not pass through you — it remains in you, becomes part of you, and cannot be shaken away.
  • Material things expire — what is in your account, your physical blessings — but what God speaks and you absorb will go from generation to generation in your bloodline until the coming of the Lord Jesus.
  • The word is always seeking to become flesh; the question is whether the ground of your heart is ready to receive it.

"Material things will expire. What God speaks to you will go from generation to generation in your bloodline until the coming of the Lord Jesus."

Prayer Proceeds from Absorption

  • Correct prayer flows from what you have absorbed — you do not pray to receive and then believe; you pray because you have already received and absorbed the truth.
  • You can pray amiss, fast amiss, and call on the correct name of Jesus and still have the opposite effect — as with the sons of Sceva — because you are calling from nothing you have absorbed.
  • What drives you to open your mouth and pray is the absorbed knowledge that God is faithful, that Jesus paid the price, and that belief activates what has already been done.

"Prayer proceeds from what you have absorbed... What pushes you to pray is what you absorb from the word of God."

Envy, Witchcraft, and the Unabsorbed Heart

  • Witchcraft begins in the church — when a believer watches a neighbor being blessed and has nothing absorbed inside, envy fills the space that absorption was meant to occupy.
  • Cain's sin was not that he failed to worship correctly — it was that he refused to do right on purpose and expected to be received anyway; his anger was not "why am I not blessed?" but "why is he blessed?"
  • God Himself came to Cain and said, "If you do right, will you not be received?" — meaning Cain knew right and refused it, which reveals a heart that has never broken its ground.

"Witchcraft begins in church... Envy begins because the place that envy is occupying, is a place you never absorbed anything from God."

Key Definitions

Tereo (Keep) — The Greek word translated "keep" in John 14:23, meaning to absorb, to hold onto, or to retain within you — not merely to obey, but to take God's Word into your innermost being so that it remains and becomes part of you.

Absorption — The process by which the Word of God moves past hearing and listening into the heart, where it cannot be stolen, shaken, or forgotten — producing transformation, genuine faith, and generational fruit.

Transformation — The renewal of the mind and heart that occurs when the Word of God enters and is absorbed; God cannot require obedience before transformation, because obedience is a product of transformation.

True Belief — Not motivation or emotion, but the state of having absorbed something so deeply from God that you are driven by it even when nothing around you confirms where you are going, and even when you cannot explain it.

God's Hand vs. God's Heart — God's hand refers to the blessings, provision, and miracles He releases — available to all; God's heart refers to the intimate Word and nature of God Himself, received only by those who absorb His Word.

Breaking the Ground — The personal, non-transferable responsibility of every believer to prepare the soil of their heart to receive and retain God's Word — no one can do this on another's behalf, not through laying on of hands, prayer, or prophetic words.

Key Takeaways

  • Absorption, not hearing, produces transformation — Sitting under the Word without absorbing it leaves you empty when tests come, no matter how long you have been in church.
  • You are personally responsible for breaking the ground of your heart — God's Word, His presence, and His blessing can all be present around you, and nothing will grow until you choose to break your own ground.
  • There are two kinds of prophetic words, and your future depends on absorbing the right one — Words tied to your present need will satisfy you; words tied to your future must be absorbed now to be activated at the right time.
  • Material blessings expire; absorbed Word is generational — What you receive into your hand is temporary; what you absorb into your heart passes through your bloodline until the coming of the Lord Jesus.
  • Correct prayer flows from what you have already absorbed — You cannot pray from an empty well; true, effective prayer is the overflow of a heart that has absorbed God's truth, not a request from someone who has absorbed nothing.

Reflection Questions

  1. When God's Word comes to you — in preaching, prophecy, or personal encounter — are you absorbing it into your heart or receiving it only on the surface? What evidence in your life points to one or the other?
  2. When tests come — financial pressure, sickness, disappointment, or delay — what have you actually retained from the Word of God that rises to sustain you? What does your response in crisis reveal about your level of absorption?
  3. Are you pursuing God's hand or God's heart? Is your relationship with God primarily driven by what He can give you right now, or are you seeking to absorb who He is?
  4. Is there any area of your life where you are responding like Esau — where something immediate and physical has become more important than the eternal Word of God planted in you? What are you trading your birthright for?
  5. What specific, practical step will you take this week to break the ground of your heart — to create the conditions for God's Word to move past your ears and become part of your innermost being?

Prayers and Declarations

Opening Prayer of Blessing

"Holy Spirit, thank you. Use this family, Lord. Father, give them wisdom and understanding for the next steps of their life. In Jesus' name, I also anoint them. They will take the world by storm for Jesus."

Say this aloud:

"It is done."

"Father, I bless all Your people with a special blessing that comes from Your heart. Bless them in Christ, show them Your kindness, show them Your goodness. May every desire they have be answered of You. May everything they have been waiting for be delivered unto them by Your angels. Father, go ahead of them, Father, bless them, Father in Christ, Father transform them, elevate them — may all their desires and all their prayers be made manifest in the mighty name of Jesus."

"Father, bless Your people as they give to You. Those who are trusting in Your provision — continue to show Your grace and Your mercy upon them. In Jesus' mighty name."
