Destroying the Spirit of Fear: The Only Cure Is Believing Fully in God's Love
Destroying the Spirit of Fear · Part 1 of 2
Fear is not a demon to be rebuked — it is a mental condition that dissolves in the presence of perfect love.
Fear has paralysed the Church, stopped angelic visitations, and kept believers from entering everything God has prepared for them. The source of fear is not a demonic spirit assigned to torment — it is a failure to believe fully in the love, grace, and finished work of Jesus Christ. When that love is understood and received, fear has no ground to stand on.
Teaching Overview
- Fear is not a demonic spirit — it is a mental condition rooted in uncertainty and a failure to believe in God's love.
- Perfect love casts out fear, and the only cure for fear is believing fully in the love of God.
- Grace, not works, is the foundation of the believer's confidence before God.
- Faith is agreeing with God and moving with what He has said — not a works-based effort to earn His response.
- The believer who is purified by love moves from prayer into expectation, resting in the knowledge of God's provision.
Key Distinctions
| Fear | Love | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An emotional response to a situation you don't fully understand | A decision to engage with someone from a certain dimension of life — a verb, not a feeling |
| Its source | Uncertainty, deception, and a failure to believe in God's character | The grace and unmerited favour of God poured into the regenerated spirit |
| Its effect | Torment, paralysis, stopped divine encounters, crippled faith | Confidence, power, a sound mind, and supernatural access to God |
| How it is resolved | Not by rebuking a spirit, but by being perfected and purified in love | By studying and believing in the love, grace, and finished work of Christ |
| Works | Grace | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Human effort to qualify before God — fasting, prayer, and righteous living as merit | God's unmerited favour — His love extended to you regardless of your performance |
| Its basis | What you have done or can do | What God has already done through Jesus Christ |
| Its effect | Pride, fear, and instability — because your standing before God depends on your insufficiency | Rest, trust, and boldness — because your standing before God depends entirely on Him |
| Biblical picture | Sackcloth — acknowledging that your righteousness is like filthy rags | Salvation by grace through faith — leaning entirely on God |
| Affection | Love | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An emotional response — positive or negative — based on how someone makes you feel | A decision and a commitment to engage with someone from a certain dimension of life |
| Its stability | Unstable — it can be manufactured, faked, or withdrawn | Stable — it is not dependent on feeling but on a deliberate choice |
| Its danger | People can use affection to deceive their way into your heart | Love, rightly understood, cannot be counterfeited — it is a doing word |
| Terror | Fear | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An acute, overwhelming response to immediate danger | An emotional condition rooted in uncertainty about what you cannot see or control |
| Biblical framing | Often conflated with fear but distinct in intensity and trigger | Addressed throughout Scripture as a condition God commands His people not to carry |
| Spirit of Fear | Mental Condition | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A supposed demonic entity that causes fear — commonly taught in Church contexts | A state of uncertainty and unbelief in the mind, shaped by a lack of revelation of God's love |
| Does it exist? | No — there is no verse in Scripture identifying a demon called fear | Yes — this is the actual biblical diagnosis: a soul not yet perfected in love |
| The remedy | Incorrectly taught as spiritual warfare, binding, or rebuking | Correctly addressed through believing in the love and grace of God |
| Prayer for Things | Expectation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Petitioning God for provision, protection, or outcomes | A settled knowing — born from repeated experience of God's faithfulness — that what is needed will come |
| Its level of maturity | Entry-level faith — appropriate and valuable in the early walk | A mature level of trust where provision is known before it arrives |
| Biblical example | "Give us this day our daily bread" — Jesus teaching people how to pray | Jesus breaking bread and giving thanks — not asking, but already expecting God's provision |
| Fasting and Prayer | Grace | |
|---|---|---|
| What they do | Fasting and prayer change the person — they do not change God or obligate Him | Grace is the ground on which God acts — out of love, not in response to human effort |
| Their danger | When treated as merit, they become pride — "because I fasted, God must answer me" | Grace removes pride entirely — God is not a genie in a bottle; He acts because He loves |
| Their relationship | Fasting and prayer are tools of alignment and surrender, not levers to move God | Grace is the atmosphere every believer is called to grow in and completely rely on |
There Is No Spirit of Fear
- Fear is not a demonic spirit or entity — it does not exist in any form as a named demon.
- There is no verse in Scripture that identifies a demon called fear; the only fears the Bible addresses are the fear of the Lord, the fear of men, the fear of the unknown, and the fear of death.
- Fear is an emotional response to a situation that is not fully understood — it is a mental condition, not a demonic assignment.
"There is no demon of fear. It doesn't exist. It's a lie."
The Fallen Angels and Their Functioning
- The devil was a cherub — a guardian of the glory of God — and is not a creator of new spiritual forces; he operates within the boundaries of his original gifting, redirected toward deception.
- Even fallen angels function within the bounds of the gifts God gave them in heaven — the gift remains pure; it is the use of the gift that is corrupted.
- The primary instrument of the devil is not fear as a spirit but deception — and deception is the channel through which the mental condition of fear is amplified.
"Whatever gift God gave them in heaven, they just provide it and use it differently. An example is if you have the gift of writing, you can choose to write good books or bad books."
What 2 Timothy 1:7 Actually Teaches
- "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" refers not to a demonic spirit being sent but to the condition of the human spirit — God did not create fear in you.
- The reference to a "sound mind" confirms that the text is addressing the condition of the soul, not a spiritual entity.
- The regenerated spirit is composed of power, love, and a sound mind — fear belongs to the old nature, not the new creation in Christ.
"God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
- There is no fear in love — those who remain in love are not tormented, because perfect love displaces the very condition in which fear operates.
- He who fears is not made perfect in love — meaning fear is a diagnostic indicator of where a believer stands in their revelation of God's love, not evidence of demonic attack.
- Love is not affection — affection is an emotional response based on how someone makes you feel, and it is unstable; love is a decision to engage with someone from a certain dimension of life.
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment. He that fear is not made perfect in love."
Fear as a Barrier to Divine Encounter
- Many believers have stopped angelic visitations by responding in fear rather than expectation when God's presence begins to manifest during prayer.
- Every time an angel appeared to a man of God in Scripture, fear was the first response — and every time, the angel's first words were "do not be afraid," not a rebuke of a demon.
- God withholds the fullness of divine experience from those who are not yet ready — not as punishment, but because He reads the heart and will not produce an encounter that does not produce faith.
"Angels were about to appear to you, but they stopped it."
The Only Cure for Fear
- The only cure for fear is believing fully in the love of God — not spiritual warfare, not binding, not fasting, and not rebuking a non-existent spirit of fear.
- Demons do not produce fear as an entity — they use the human mind's own unbelief in God's love as a channel to torment the soul.
- Those who are purified by love, like Paul, can declare "to die is gain" — because when love is perfected, even death loses its threat.
"The only cure of fear is believing fully in the love of God."
Fear Is the Result of Not Knowing Jesus
- Fear enters when a believer does not know what Jesus has done — the finished work of Christ eliminates every ground on which fear can stand.
- Fear is rooted in self-condemnation — believing that what was done yesterday will catch up with you — but God declares there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.
- The children of God remain in fear because they do not open the Bible to discover the truth of their inheritance in Christ; the responsibility to know what has been left for them belongs to the believer.
"Fear is a result of not knowing who Jesus is and what Jesus has done."
Testing and the Purpose of Difficult Seasons
- God permits testing not as punishment but as the means by which the believer learns to depend on Him — every difficult season is purposeful.
- Every situation in the life of a believer in Christ has been permitted by God — nothing passes through to the child of God without His allowance.
- The devil has studied humanity long enough to know every breaking point — but God stretches the believer beyond their perceived breaking point so that they no longer have one.
"Everything that God will ever permit to happen in your life is for your good."
Grace, Not Works, Is the Foundation
- God is not obligated to respond to fasting or prayer as merit — He acts out of love, not out of compulsion; He is not a genie in a bottle.
- Fasting does not change God — it changes the one who fasts; God does not change, and He already knows what is needed before it is asked.
- The moment a believer believes God must answer because they prayed or fasted, that is pride — because it places the basis of God's action on human performance rather than His love.
"God is not obligated to anybody. He is not a genie in a bottle. God does these things because He loves."
Jesus Is Your Righteousness
- No amount of human effort qualifies anyone to stand before God — it is only His grace and love that bring the believer into His presence.
- Jesus became sin so that His righteousness could be imputed to the believer — human righteousness, by contrast, is like filthy rags before God.
- The sackcloth of the Old Testament was a visible declaration of the same truth — "my righteousness is not enough; I need You."
"Jesus is your righteousness... I'm already the only righteousness you ever need."
Faith Is Agreeing with God
- Faith is not a self-motivated act — it is agreeing with what God has said and moving in alignment with His word, regardless of whether the outcome is visible.
- It is impossible to please God without faith — because without faith, the believer is operating from their own understanding rather than from God's revealed word.
- The greatest level any person can reach with God is believing in what God has done — not in what they themselves can do.
"Faith is agreeing with God."
Moving from Prayer to Expectation
- There is a level of spiritual maturity where provision is no longer petitioned — it is expected, because the believer's knowing of God has become settled through repeated experience of His faithfulness.
- Jesus did not pray for bread when feeding the multitude — He gave thanks, because He was already in expectation; He knew what God had already provided.
- Expectation is not presumption — it is the natural fruit of a believer who has grown in grace and in the knowledge of God's character.
"You get to a certain point where you no longer pray for things — they just come because you're believing the word."
Key Definitions
Fear — An emotional response to a situation that is not fully understood; a mental condition rooted in uncertainty, not a demonic entity.
Spirit of Fear — A commonly taught but non-existent demonic spirit; what is actually described in 2 Timothy 1:7 is the condition of the unregenerated human spirit, which God did not design to carry fear.
Love — Not a feeling or emotional affection, but a decision to engage with someone from a certain dimension of life; a verb and a doing word — God's deliberate, committed choice toward humanity.
Affection — An emotional, positive or negative response to how someone treats you; unstable and subject to deception, and therefore not to be confused with love.
Grace — God's unmerited favour — the ground on which He acts toward humanity, entirely independent of human performance, fasting, prayer, or righteousness.
Faith — Agreement with what God has said, expressed through movement and alignment with His word — not a works-based act of self-determination, but trust placed in the character and promise of God.
Key Takeaways
- Fear is a mental condition, not a demonic spirit — Binding or rebuking a non-existent spirit of fear wastes spiritual energy that should be directed toward growing in the love and knowledge of God.
- Perfect love is the only cure for fear — Any approach to fear that bypasses a deeper revelation of God's love will fail, because fear can only be displaced by what is greater than it.
- Grace, not works, is the believer's foundation — When a believer understands that God acts from love and not obligation, the anxiety of needing to earn His response is removed entirely.
- Faith is agreement with God's word, not self-generated action — Misunderstanding faith as a works-based effort keeps believers from the rest and boldness that true faith produces.
- Maturity moves the believer from petition to expectation — A deepening knowledge of God transforms prayer from anxious asking into confident thanksgiving, because provision is already known.
Reflection Questions
- When you sense an unusual presence during prayer, is your first instinct fear or expectation? What does that response reveal about your understanding of God's nature?
- In which areas of your life are you still operating from works — believing that God will act because of what you have done — rather than from grace?
- What specific truth about God's love have you not yet fully believed? What has been preventing you from receiving it?
- Is your relationship with God currently characterised more by petition or by expectation? What would it take for you to move from one to the other?
- Where has fear stopped you from entering something God was calling you into — and what would it look like to step forward in the love of God rather than wait until fear is gone?
