The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil: Why God Planted What Could Destroy You

The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil: Why God Planted What Could Destroy You

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 17 October 2019

Truth before its appointed time brings death — but truth received in its season brings transformation.

The tree of knowledge of good and evil is one of the most misunderstood objects in all of Scripture. The confusion is not merely academic — it affects how humanity understands sin, death, God's justice, and the purpose of spiritual maturity. God did not plant the tree as a trap. He planted it as part of a progressive design, and what destroyed Adam was not the tree itself, but exposure to its knowledge before his capacity was ready to receive it.

Faith Grows Through Revelation, Not Scripture Alone

  • Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God — but what causes spiritual growth is revelation, not scripture alone.
  • Scripture is a testimony of the Word. Jesus is not the Bible — He is the Word, not words, not scriptures.
  • What makes a person great spiritually is not how much scripture they have memorised, but what they know and how they receive it.

"You seek the scriptures thinking that in them you have life, but the scriptures point to me or they testify about me."

The Purpose of the Tree of Knowledge

  • The tree of knowledge of good and evil was not a trap — people misunderstand it because they do not know its purpose or why God placed it there.
  • The tree possessed knowledge, not wickedness. In the garden, there was nothing wicked — therefore the tree itself was not bad.
  • God's intention was never for Adam to remain the same. The tree was part of a progressive design for man's development.

"God never wanted him to eat of the tree of his own. God wanted to be the one that gives him."

The Hebrew Meaning of Evil (Ra)

  • Evil in Hebrew is the word Ra, meaning to be disagreeable — to choose a different way. It does not mean wickedness.
  • Wickedness means to be unpleasant — to be in the active act of destruction for the wrong purpose. These are distinct categories.
  • God Himself repented of the evil He thought to do to Israel (Exodus 32:14) — not because He was wicked, but because His just decision appeared disagreeable to surrounding nations.

"Has God ever been evil? No. But if you understand Ra's rendering you know what it's talking about."

God's Nature: Justice, Not Wickedness

  • God is obsessed with justice and always acts with perfect justice.
  • When God put Jesus on the cross and punished Him for humanity's sake, it was perfect justice — those who do not understand law cannot understand why forgiveness required a sacrifice.
  • God allowed Job to be tested by the devil not because He doubted Job, but because love must be proven — God cannot simply declare that someone loves Him without evidence that justifies it.

"God always says, I am the Lord that loves justice. He's obsessed with justice."

Testing Proves Love; Temptation Seeks to Destroy It

  • To tempt is to desire to make someone fall. To test is to prove them.
  • When a teacher gives a test in school, it is not a temptation — it is a proof of what the student has learned.
  • True love is proven when people are tested, not when they merely claim to love. Many people claim love because of what they benefit — when the benefit disappears, so does the love.

"When you go to school, you study. The teacher gives you a test, not a temptation."

Adam Was Not Immortal

  • Adam was not immortal and was not eternal. God's intention was never for him to remain as he was.
  • Man was a living soul, not a living spirit. His life and dimension were in the soul — he had not yet entered into his spiritual nature.
  • Had Adam been immortal, God would not have warned him of death, nor would He have needed to keep him from the tree of life.

"Adam was not immortal. Neither was he eternal."

Adam Never Understood the Value of the Tree of Life

  • The tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil stood together in the midst of the garden — yet Adam never thought to eat from the tree of life.
  • He did not understand the value of eternal life because he had no knowledge concerning it. You cannot know the value of living forever until you have knowledge about what life is.
  • Only after eating from the tree of knowledge did Adam suddenly desire the tree of life — this is what caused God to expel him from the garden.

"You can never know the value of eternal life or the value of living forever until you have knowledge concerning it."

The Gap Period and God's Mandate to Replenish

  • Between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2 is a gap period of billions of years — the earth was not created void; something happened to bring it to that state.
  • God's command to Adam to replenish the earth means the earth had previously been full. To replenish means to do something again.
  • God gave the same command to Noah after the flood (Genesis 9:1), confirming this pattern: replenishment is God's response to devastation.

"Why would God say replenish? It means that it used to be before. Because God has never created anything void or empty. Everything that God does is for purpose."

Why God Cast Adam Out of the Garden

  • God did not cast Adam out as punishment alone — He did it to prevent Adam from sacrificing himself by eating the tree of life with corrupted knowledge inside him.
  • Had Adam eaten the tree of life in that state, the entire human race would have inherited his corrupted information and lived forever in that condition, with no reset possible.
  • Jesus is called the second Adam because He came to do what Adam attempted — to enter life through sacrifice — but with the right information.

"If you are exposed to something before your time, it will destroy you."

Knowledge Before Maturity Destroys

  • Eating from the tree was not the sin — what destroyed Adam was that the knowledge inside him exceeded his capacity to carry it.
  • God did not say the day you eat you will sin — He said the day you eat you will die. The act of acquiring knowledge was not itself sinful; the destruction came from receiving it prematurely.
  • Spiritual things are progressive. Revelation is not stagnant — it unfolds according to where a person is, and exposure to future truth before present capacity is cultivated will bring harm, not blessing.

"Eating the tree was not a sin. What was going to happen to him after he eats it — what will be inside of him — his capacity in him will be the one that will make him die."

Key Definitions

Evil (Ra) — The Hebrew word Ra, meaning to be disagreeable or to choose a different way. It does not mean wicked or destructive in intent.

Wickedness — To be unpleasant; to be in the active act of destruction for the wrong purpose. Distinct from Ra.

Testing — A divine act designed to prove love, faithfulness, or capacity. God tests; He does not tempt.

Temptation — The desire to cause someone to fall. It is the enemy's tool, not God's.

Replenish — To do again what was done before. God's command to both Adam and Noah to replenish the earth implies prior fullness that was lost.

Revelation — The living Word imparted to the spirit, causing spiritual growth. Distinct from scripture, which is the testimony of the Word.

Key Takeaways

  • Adam was not immortal — Understanding this dismantles the false idea that God's goal is simply to restore humanity to Adam's original state; God's plan was always progressive elevation, not restoration to immaturity.
  • Adam never understood the value of eternal life until he received knowledge concerning it — This reveals why spiritual hunger itself is a gift: you cannot desire what you have never been shown, and God uses knowledge to awaken longing for what He intends to give.
  • Exposure to truth before its appointed time brings death, not life — Spiritual maturity is not achieved by accumulating more information faster; it is cultivated through the progressive and properly timed release of revelation by God.

Reflection Questions

  1. In what areas of your life have you sought knowledge, spiritual advancement, or answers before God determined you were ready — and what was the fruit of that?
  2. Have you mistaken God's testing for God's abandonment? What would it mean to reframe your current trial as proof that God is justifying your love for Him?
  3. Where has someone — a preacher, a teacher, or your own curiosity — exposed you to spiritual truth before your capacity was cultivated to hold it, and how has that affected you?
  4. Adam lived in the garden with the tree of life present but never pursued it because he didn't understand its value. What gifts, callings, or provisions has God placed near you that you have ignored because you lacked the revelation of their worth?
  5. Revelation is progressive and not stagnant. Are you patient with where you currently are in God, or are you forcing your way into dimensions you have not yet been prepared for?

Prayers and Declarations

"The Lord bless everybody."

During the teaching, congregation was instructed: "When you listen to me, I want you to always be in prayer."

"I am pouring a new oil upon your head. Something new shall be brought out of you. Your words shall take residence in the earth. Whatever you say shall be more than I see. It will have the ability to grow and become a tree that many shall eat from. Your presence shall crush the enemy. Your presence will silence every witch and wizard that has been coming against your life."

"I call in heir with Christ. Let that spirit of Numaticos manifest in you."
