Unclean Spirits: Understanding Demonic Defilement and Spiritual Contamination
Unclean spirits specialize in defiling your spirit, mind, and body through contamination rather than mere sin.
Unclean spirits represent a distinct category of demonic oppression whose primary function differs fundamentally from other evil forces. Where demons may drive you to sin and devils may attack you outright, unclean spirits work to defile you—to make you spiritually, mentally, and physically unclean. Understanding this distinction and recognizing how unclean spirits contaminate environments, relationships, and sources of provision is essential for achieving true spiritual purification and sanctification.
Teaching Overview
-
Different types of spirits have different assignments and operate with distinct spiritual functions—demons, devils, evil spirits, and unclean spirits are not equal in their nature or capability.
-
Unclean spirits function as gatekeepers and primary defilers, creating environments of degradation while allowing access to other demonic forces that perpetuate specific destructive assignments.
-
The primary function of an unclean spirit is to defile you—to make you spiritually, mentally, and physically unclean—which is fundamentally different from causing you to commit sin.
-
Unclean spirits create defilement through contaminated environments, defiled sources of provision, corrupted relationships, and unclean practices that isolate and degrade their victims.
-
Defilement manifests through physical symptoms, psychological deterioration, loss of self-worth, foggy thinking, depression, skin diseases, and degrading personal habits that reflect the atmosphere unclean spirits create.
-
Purification and sanctification are both necessary to overcome unclean spirits—casting them out is only the first step; the defiled environment and effects they leave behind must be cleansed and made holy.

Foundation: The Challenge of Consistent Righteousness
- Doing good is difficult because it requires persistence toward people who have wronged, betrayed, or abused you.
- The greatest test in Christian life is consistency in doing good to those who have acted against you, not prayer or spiritual warfare.
- Love proves genuine when it extends to those who hate you, do not appreciate you, and offer no reciprocal reward.
"Our challenge is not prayer. Our challenge is not demons. Our challenge is consistency in doing good."
Types of Spirits and Their Assignments
- All spirits are not made equal; just as different angels have different assignments, fallen spirits also have different assignments and operate with distinct spiritual functions.
- Not every demon lives inside you; some spirits do work in your life without manifesting, creating a sense that something is spiritually off even when prayers appear to produce no visible deliverance.
- Unclean spirits are mentioned more frequently in Scripture than demons, devils, or evil spirits—and where they are not explicitly named, their effects are most visible.
"All spirits are not made equal. Just like angels, each kind of angel has a different assignment. Each kind of fallen spirit also have different assignment."
The Gadarene Demoniac: Unclean Spirits as Gatekeepers
- Jesus addressed a single unclean spirit in the Gadarene demoniac, not the entire demonic assembly, because the unclean spirit was the gatekeeper that allowed other spirits entry.
- The unclean spirit remained consistently with the man while other spirits came and went—the man could be temporarily bound with chains, but only the unclean spirit stayed.
- The unclean spirit's primary role was to create the defiled environment and atmosphere that allowed the other demonic forces to function and maintain control.
"The spirits that bring other spirits in you, the first one that comes to you is an unclean spirit. The unclean spirit is the one that made room for everybody."
Definition of Unclean Spirits: Defilement vs. Sin
- The primary work of unclean spirits is to defile you, to make you spiritually, mentally, and physically unclean—which is fundamentally different from causing you to sin.
- Defilement is distinct from sin; you can become defiled without committing sin, and the effects of defilement remain even after the spirit departs.
- The marriage bed is specifically called "undefiled" because it can be defiled—Scripture would not issue such a warning if defilement and sin were identical.
"The duty of an unclean spirit is to defile you. The duty of an unclean spirit is to defile you. That's the main work of unclean spirits. Their duty is to make you unclean."
Effects of Unclean Spirits: Environmental and Personal Degradation
- Unclean spirits isolate their victims by placing them in physically defiled environments—the Gadarene demoniac was made to dwell among the tombs, a location defiled by contact with the dead.
- They compel self-destructive acts of degradation that isolate the victim from society and reinforce shame and hopelessness.
- They create persistent habits of uncleanliness—refusal to bathe, unwillingness to dress clean, hoarding of trash—that reflect the spiritual atmosphere they establish.
"Unclean spirits make you do unclean acts. They don't just make you to sin. But the sins that will make you to do is generally unclean things."
Unclean Spirits and Sexual Defilement
- Within marriage, unclean spirits influence sexual behavior to introduce defilement into what should be a pure and intimate covenant act.
- Bringing other parties into the marital bed defiles both the body and the environment; you become one flesh with multiple people, creating spiritual contamination.
- When sexual intimacy shifts from mutual satisfaction and love to satisfying personal lust and desires seen in pornography, an unclean spirit has established control.
"You know these people start bringing other people in the bedroom. That's very unclean. Something that is should be intimate between two people. You have brought other parties inside. Your bed is already defiled. Your environment is defiled. Your body is defiled."
Pornography: A Primary Vehicle of Unclean Spirits
- Pornography is the direct result of unclean spirit influence, not merely a moral choice.
- Those engaged in pornography experience systematic defilement: loss of self-worth, mental fog, depression, and deterioration of self-love.
- The defilement is actual and measurable—it is not merely conceptual shame but genuine spiritual and psychological degradation.
"Pornography is a result of an unclean spirit. Because its duty, I've never noticed what happens to, if you do research and you read people who like engage with pornography. Number one, they don't even love themself anymore. They are just beat down."
Physical Manifestations: Disease and Defilement
- Sexually transmitted diseases are usually the result of unclean spirit influence and manifest visibly on the skin as physical proof of spiritual defilement.
- Jesus commanded not only that spirits be rebuked but that the defiled be cleansed; many people need cleansing, not only deliverance.
- The cleansing offering in Levitical law existed separately from the sin offering because defilement requires purification distinct from forgiveness of sin.
"STD is usually a result of an unclean spirit. That's why they appear on your skin. That's why you find that Jesus said go and cleanse certain people. It didn't say just review the spirit. Said clean them."
Contaminated Sources: The Three Hebrew Boys and Spiritual Protection
- The three Hebrew boys refused the king's table not because eating would cause them to sin but because eating food dedicated to other gods would defile them spiritually.
- Consuming food from defiled sources places you under the spiritual control of the gods those sources served; the spirit operating through the source gains influence over you.
- Refusal to eat from defiled sources is an act of spiritual protection—maintaining cleanliness and preventing spiritual control through contaminated provision.
"They didn't want to become unclean. Why? Because the king of Babylon served their gods. And if you ate from their table, then they at the ones that will influence you."
Defilement Through Relationships and Association
- Eating with certain people, receiving provision from certain sources, and entering into relationship with certain individuals can defile you spiritually.
- Some of your suffering originates not from your own actions but from where you ate and who you ate with—contamination through association.
- Breaking ties with defiled sources and contaminated relationships is an act of spiritual cleanliness, not rejection of people but rejection of demonic influence.
"Some of you are suffering because of somewhere you ate. Some of you are suffering because of who you ate with."
Purification and Sanctification: Both Are Necessary
- Casting out an unclean spirit is incomplete deliverance; the defiled environment and all effects it left behind must be purified and sanctified.
- You need both purification (cleansing of what is defiled) and sanctification (separation unto holiness and wholeness).
- If an unclean spirit has made your house unclean and then departed, the house remains defiled unless it is actively purified and consecrated to God.
"This is why as a child of God you don't need only purification. You need sanctification. You don't only need purification, but you need sanctification."
Key Definitions
Unclean spirit — A demonic force whose primary assignment is to defile you spiritually, mentally, and physically; operates as a gatekeeper allowing access to other demonic forces; remains persistently present while other spirits come and go.
Defilement — Being made unclean through contact with contaminated sources, environments, or relationships; distinct from sin because it can occur without transgression and its effects persist after the source is removed.
Sanctification — The process of being set apart and made holy; the necessary complement to purification that not only cleanses what is defiled but establishes lasting spiritual wholeness.
Purification — The cleansing of defilement; distinct from forgiveness of sin because it addresses contamination rather than transgression.
Gatekeeper spirit — The unclean spirit that establishes control over a person or environment and permits other demonic forces to enter and operate within that space.
Defiled environment — A location or atmosphere that has been made spiritually unclean through demonic presence and activity, requiring active cleansing and consecration.
Key Takeaways
-
Different spirits have different assignments — Unclean spirits specifically defile rather than merely tempt to sin or attack outright; understanding this distinction determines the strategy for freedom.
-
Defilement is distinct from sin — You can become defiled without committing sin, and defilement requires both purification and sanctification to be fully overcome.
-
Unclean spirits operate through contamination — They work through defiled environments, contaminated sources of provision, and corrupted relationships to maintain control and isolation.
-
Purification is incomplete without sanctification — Casting out the spirit is only the beginning; the defiled atmosphere and all its effects must be actively cleansed and consecrated to God.
-
Consistency in righteousness is your greatest protection — Your challenge is not defeating demons but maintaining continuous love and goodness toward those who harm you, which proves you are truly God's child.
Reflection Questions
-
Are you aware of any area of your life where you sense something is spiritually "off"—where prayer seems insufficient but no demon is manifesting? What defiled environment, contaminated relationship, or unclean source might be influencing that area?
-
Where have you allowed unclean spirits to influence your sexual intimacy, your entertainment consumption, or your personal habits of cleanliness? What specific step will you take this week to refuse that contamination?
-
Who are you currently eating with, receiving from, or sitting under that may be defiling you spiritually? What is it costing you to maintain that relationship or source?
-
After deliverance from demonic oppression, have you actively purified and sanctified the defiled areas—your home, your body, your relationships, your mind—or have you left the contamination in place?
-
In what relationship or situation is your consistency in doing good being tested most severely? What would it look like to pass that test without bitterness or compromise?
Prayers and Declarations
Opening Prayer
"Father, I pray for everyone that is watching. Lord, we want your heart. The heart that is merciful, the heart that is consistently forgiving, the heart that is accepting, that heart that is tolerant, that heart that looks beyond faults and failures, that heart that finds the good in everyone, that heart that sees your plan for everyone, the heart that is compassionate, the heart that does not want to see anyone end up in hell. That heart that is ready to bear all, to accept all, to endure all. Lord doing good is not easy. You know that it is not easy, but Lord Jesus you did it. And we know you can grant us the strength to do the same. Lord, we don't want to fail you. We want to express you. Some of the ones that are watching their battles are with their spouses. Some are divorced and they are battle are with their divorced spouses. Some of them is with their children. Some of them is with their own families. Lord, there is a host of things that are just all over the place that our love is being tested continually. Some of us is for our brothers and sisters in Christ that spoke against us when we were vulnerable to them. When we opened our hearts to them, concerning what we are going through, maybe our own weaknesses. Lord and they went and spoke against us. Spread and hang our nakedness before everyone. Lord, loving those people is hard. But we know that if we don't work together, that if we don't work in love, then we are not your children. Lord have mess you on us. Give us a heart of flesh. Give us a heart that can feel remove the stony heart from us. Causes to be like you by the power of the Holy Spirit, direct us on your path. Lord walking on the straight and narrow is hard, but with your Holy Spirit, all things are possible. We give ourselves to you, And we pray that Lord, you will help us this day. Give us the consistency, give us the zeal to do good. In Jesus' name. Amen."
Lift up your voice and thank you for the deliverance of the living God. I touch your house. Touch your head. In the name of the living God, I am delivered. Lift up your voice, and begin to declare.
"I am delivered."
Touch your neighbor and your neighbor. Those who are with us are more than those who are against us.
"Those who are with us are more than those who are against us, and those who are against us, we are not alone. We are not alone. There are hosts of heaven with us. The hosts of heaven are with us."
Lift up your hands to heaven. Because the Lord will fight for you.
"Because the Lord will fight for you. If it is a demonic agenda, it will be destroyed. It will be destroyed."
Lift up your voice and begin to cast all this thing. I receive it. I have them. I'm leaving. I live alone to the area of God.
"I receive it. I have them. I'm leaving. I live alone to the area of God. I have them. In the mighty name of Jesus."
