Why You Have Nightmares: Understanding God's Communication Through Dreams

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 29 November 2022

Dreams are God's primary method of spiritual revelation, not demonic attacks; learning to interpret them unlocks divine guidance for your life.

Many believers have been taught incorrectly about the nature of nightmares and bad dreams. Things are not always what they seem in the spiritual realm, and understanding this truth elevates believers to a higher level of spiritual maturity. The biggest issue believers face is spiritual ignorance—we do not understand spiritual things, and because of this ignorance, we suffer the consequences of missing what God is transmitting to us through various channels, including dreams.

Teaching Overview

  1. Dreams are revelations of what is already happening spiritually in your life, not attacks that begin in the night—they are God's method of alerting you to spiritual realities.
  2. God is obligated to communicate with you in every way necessary to get your attention, and when your conscious mind turns off in sleep, your awareness shifts to the spiritual realm.
  3. Satan has no control over the dream realm because Jesus possesses the keys of hell, death, and the grave; therefore, "evil dreams" do not exist in the demonic sense.
  4. Fear in dreams is not demonic but a natural human response to the unknown, and confusing the spirit of fear with fear itself causes believers to rebuke messages from God instead of interpreting them.
  5. Dreams require interpretation because they are God's communication in a language that needs to be decoded; every dream is a specific message with its own unique interpretation.
  6. Recurring dreams are God repeating a message because you have not yet understood the first one; God will never move to the next message until you comprehend the previous instruction.
  7. The physical world operates on delay—it is a reflection of what has already occurred spiritually—which is why God often reveals coming events, warnings, and guidance through dreams before they manifest physically.

Satan's Powerlessness Over the Spiritual Realm

  • Satan does not have control of the dream realm because Jesus took the keys of hell, death, and the grave.
  • When we say God is in control, we mean He is controlling everything—there is no realm, including the spiritual realm, where Satan operates independently.
  • The concept of "evil dreams" does not exist because demons cannot initiate dreams; Satan has no authority to create what God alone orchestrates.

"There's no such thing as evil dreams. It doesn't exist. Satan doesn't have control of the dream realm. Satan doesn't even have control of the spiritual realm. Leave alone Satan doesn't even have control of hell. Jesus took the keys of what? Hell death and the grave."

God's Obligation to Communicate

  • God is obligated to communicate in any way necessary to get your attention, whether you pray or do not pray.
  • Everything that happens on earth occurs only after God reveals it, first to the prophet as His primary choice, but if no prophet is present and a matter concerns you, God must let you know.
  • When your body sleeps, your conscious awareness shifts from the physical world to the spiritual world, creating a window into what is happening spiritually around you.

"God is obligated to do anything in any way to get your attention. Now whether you pray or you don't pray, this is a reality that happens. When you get on your bed and you lay down your body turns off, you are awareness moves from the physical world into the spiritual world."

Dreams as Divine Revelation, Not Demonic Attack

  • Dreams are a revelation of what is already happening spiritually; they are not attacks that originate in the night but revelations of attacks already underway in your life.
  • Many people rebuke the dream instead of rebuking the events that are influencing their physical life, missing the purpose of God's communication.
  • The attack did not start when you slept; it started while you were walking through your day thinking you were in control, and the dream was God alerting you to wake up and take action.

"Dreams are a revelation of what is happening around you. It's not an attack in the night. It's a revelation of what is already happening in your life."

The Physical World Operates on Delay

  • Everything you see physically is a delayed reaction because the physical world is in the past—it is a reflection of something that has already occurred spiritually.
  • Jesus knew He would die because that event was already established from the foundations of the earth; His disciples were trying to save His life while He was ensuring His death because the spiritual outcome was already set.
  • Everything in the world is a delayed reaction; therefore, God reveals coming events, warnings, and guidance through dreams before they manifest in the physical realm.

"The lamb that was slain from the foundations of the earth... Everything in this world is a delayed reaction."

Scripture's Witness to Dreams as Messages

  • Throughout Scripture, no one ever prayed against dreams or spent time rebuking dreams; instead, even unsaved individuals understood that dreams were messages from God.
  • The Pharaoh of Egypt understood dreams were a form of communication and sought interpretation, recognizing that dreams required decoding like any other communication.
  • In Genesis 40, Joseph's interpretation of the butler's and baker's dreams established that dreams are specific messages—each person's dream has its own interpretation according to the message meant for them.

"Many will pray against dreams. Yet if you read throughout Scripture, there is no one that ever prayed against dreams. No one spent time to rebuked dreams. But everyone in Scripture even the ones that were unsaved. They understood that dreams were a message."

Fear Is Not Demonic

  • Fear is a normal human response to the unknown; it is a defensive mechanism that alerts you when you lack information about what you are about to experience.
  • Do not confuse the spirit of fear (demonic) with fear itself (human nature); the Bible says God has not given believers the spirit of fear, but fear in response to genuine danger or the unknown is natural.
  • Every time angels appeared to people in Scripture, they said "Fear not," not because fear is sinful but because fear is the natural human response to encountering the divine or the unknown.

"Don't confuse the spirit of fear and fear. There is a big difference between the spirit of fear and fear itself. Fear is normal."

Men of God Were Troubled by Dreams

  • No man of God in Scripture ever saw a dream and was pleasant afterward; men like Daniel were troubled by their dreams, indicating that being troubled by a dream is a sign of its spiritual significance.
  • To be troubled by a dream does not mean it is demonic; it means you have been given a revelation that requires your attention and action.
  • Fear and trouble in response to a dream are indicators that the dream carries importance and requires interpretation.

"No man of God ever saw a dream in Scripture and He was pleasant. After the dream, the O.S.A. was troubled."

Fear Indicates Preparation, Not Demonic Attack

  • If you do not fear, you do not care enough; fear means you recognize the stakes and are prepared to face what comes.
  • Warriors and those facing significant challenges understand that fear indicates you care about the outcome and are mentally prepared to navigate danger.
  • The Bible calls believers to be in a battle; fear in that context is appropriate alertness, not a sign of demonic oppression.

"If you don't fear you don't care enough. That's good. That's true."

Dreams Require Interpretation

  • Anything that requires interpretation is a form of communication; dreams are communication in another language that must be decoded to make sense.
  • Not every dream should be interpreted the same way because each dream carries its own specific message and meaning.
  • Even if a dream looks clear as day, it still requires interpretation; the only things that do not require interpretation are open visions or God's direct voice.

"Anything that needs interpretation, it means it's a communication."

The Prophet and the Realm of Dreams

  • A prophet is not someone who prophesies but someone who has met God; the primary function of a prophet is to prophesy, but you cannot speak for someone you have never met.
  • God makes Himself known to His servants through visions and dreams; if you are not dreaming, something is off spiritually, particularly in these last days when the Holy Spirit has been poured out.
  • In the last days, anyone who has the Holy Spirit should be dreaming; if you are not dreaming, you may need deliverance because not dreaming is more of a sign of demonic oppression than dreaming about demons.

"And we'll speak unto him in a dream. Oh, I will make myself known unto him in a vision. And I will speak to Him in a dream."

The Danger of Not Dreaming

  • It is more demonic to not dream than to dream and see a demon chasing you, because if you are not dreaming, you do not even know what is happening spiritually.
  • If you are dreaming and seeing a demon, at least you know what you are fighting; but if you are not dreaming, you are blind to the spiritual warfare around you.
  • If you have the Holy Spirit and are not dreaming, that is a greater sign of demonic interference than the presence of nightmares.

"It is more demonic for you to not dream. Then for you to dream and to see a demon chasing, at least I know what I'm fighting."

Understanding Dreams Through Faithfulness

  • When you are faithful, you upgrade from the realm of dreams to a higher level of communication with God (mouth-to-mouth communication, as with Moses).
  • Dreams are called "dark speeches," meaning they require work to interpret, but they are nonetheless God's communication.
  • Even though dreams require interpretation, they are not less authoritative or less from God than any other form of divine communication.

"You upgrade from the realm of dreams because of faithfulness. But these are called dark speeches, meaning you need to work to interpret them. But it's never the less God."

Recurring Dreams: God's Persistence

  • Recurring dreams are God repeating the same message because you have not understood the first one; God will never move to the next message until you comprehend the previous instruction.
  • The same dream may appear in different forms or variations, but the core message remains the same until you grasp it.
  • When you dream of dead people or see recurring themes, instead of rebuking them, ask God what He is really saying and pray for interpretation.

"God will never go to the second message until you get the first message."

Spiritual Communication is Backed Up

  • Your spiritual inbox is backed up because you have not addressed the first message God sent you; God will not give you new instructions about where to go or what to do while you are ignoring previous instruction.
  • When you ask God to show you the next step, He says, "But I told you how to do it last week."
  • Missing previous instruction causes you to miss the next step, creating a backup of divine communication.

God's Orchestration and the Danger of Missing Instruction

  • God orchestrates your life so that when you move, every piece is in place for you; He positions people and circumstances in advance so that your steps align with His design.
  • If you miss instruction, you go to the wrong place and mess up the whole plan because everything is interconnected—everyone must be blessed through another person.
  • Missing instruction can delay your progress by years; you may pray for direction the next week, but you are behind schedule by ten years because you missed the previous word.

"If you miss instruction, you go to the wrong place and then you mess up the whole part and of everything."

Dreams as Specific Messages

  • Each person's dream carries a message specific to them; how you interpret one dream is not how you interpret all dreams because God speaks in parables and symbols unique to each person's life.
  • Genesis 40:5 demonstrates that each man had an interpretation according to his dream—the butler and baker had different dreams with different meanings.
  • A dream about your husband does not mean your husband is literally beating you; it is a message that requires interpretation and should not lead to resentment of the person in the dream.

"How you interpret one dream is not how you interpret all dreams. It's a specific message."

God's Communication Through Troubling Dreams

  • Dreams that are not pleasant are still God speaking; seeing something troubling in a dream (like a loved one suffering) is still the voice of Jesus communicating to you.
  • The fact that a dream is unpleasant does not make it demonic; it makes it a message worthy of interpretation and attention.
  • God uses dreams to alert you to serious matters that require your prayer, intervention, or awareness.

"Do you think it's pleasant to see somebody losing their baby? It's God speaking. It is the Lord Jesus speaking."

Assessing, Analyzing, and Acting on Dreams

  • When God gives you a revelation in a dream, it is your duty to assess it, analyze it, and figure out who is the best person to help you address what was revealed.
  • You should not assume or guess about a dream's meaning; you should pray for interpretation and then take practical action based on what God reveals.
  • Not every dream requires deliverance ministry; some dreams are warnings that require prayer, financial intervention, intercession, or simply awareness.

"When you are given a revelation by God, it is your duty to assess it, analyze it, and then figure out who will be the best person that will help me in fixing it."

The Call to Stop Rebuking Dreams

  • Stop praying against dreams and rebuking dreams; accept them as messages from God.
  • Once you realize that God wants to talk to you so badly and that you cannot run away from His voice, your whole attitude and approach to God will change.
  • Your understanding that God has been instructing you all along through dreams will make you a completely different person.

"Stop praying against dreams accept them. Stop rebuking dreams accept them. It is a message. It is a message. It is a message from God."

Key Definitions

Dream — A revelation of what is happening in the spiritual realm given to you while your conscious awareness has shifted from the physical world to the spiritual world during sleep; it is a form of God's communication that requires interpretation.

Dark Speeches — A form of divine communication that is veiled or symbolic and therefore requires work to interpret, as distinct from mouth-to-mouth communication or direct voice from God.

Spirit of Fear — A demonic force that paralyzes and controls; distinct from the natural human emotion of fear, which is a normal response to the unknown.

Fear — A natural human response to the unknown or to recognizing danger; it is a defensive mechanism that alerts you and indicates you care about the outcome.

Interpretation — The work of decoding a dream's symbolic language to understand its specific message; every dream requires interpretation because dreams are God's communication in another language.

Fasting — A temporary, conduit of humility in which you abstain from food or activity to break the flesh and demonstrate submission to God.

Living a Fasted Life — A lifestyle of continuous spiritual discipline and humility, like John the Baptist, in which you maintain an ongoing posture of surrender to God beyond temporary fasting periods.

Key Takeaways

  • Dreams are messages from God, not demonic attacks — Understanding this distinction transforms how you respond to nightmares and eliminates the practice of rebuking the very communication God is sending to alert you to spiritual reality.

  • Satan has no control over your dreams — Jesus holds the keys of hell, death, and the grave, meaning God alone orchestrates the dream realm; therefore, "evil dreams" do not originate from demonic initiation but from divine revelation.

  • Fear in dreams is a sign of importance, not demonic oppression — Being troubled or afraid in a dream indicates that the dream carries significant meaning and requires your attention and interpretation, not rejection.

  • Recurring dreams mean you have not yet understood the message — God will not give you the next instruction until you have comprehended the previous one; recurring dreams are God's persistence in communicating what you have missed.

  • Your spiritual communication is backed up because you ignored previous instruction — Missing what God told you before prevents you from receiving what He wants to tell you next, creating delays of years in your life.

  • Every dream is specific to you and requires its own interpretation — No two dreams are interpreted the same way because each carries a unique message designed for your life; even dreams that look clear require interpretation.

  • Interpret dreams instead of rebuking them — When you stop praying against dreams and instead seek interpretation, you unlock God's guidance and transform your relationship with Him from one of resistance to one of receptivity.

Reflection Questions

  1. How have you been interpreting nightmares or bad dreams in the past, and what changes when you understand them as God's revelation rather than demonic attack?

  2. Can you identify a recurring dream or pattern you have experienced, and what might God be trying to communicate to you through its repetition?

  3. What instruction or message from God have you been ignoring, and how might this be preventing you from receiving what He wants to tell you next?

  4. When you experience fear or trouble in a dream, how will you now respond differently—seeking interpretation instead of rebuking the dream?

  5. What specific dream have you had recently that you could bring to God for interpretation, and who in your faith community could help you understand what God is revealing?

Prayers and Declarations

I'm going to allow for you to go and give to God whatever is in your heart. When you come back, I'll give you instructions that can help you. To see a sequence of a dream, without panicking and breaking the protocol of the voice. You know, sometimes you dream and then it scares you that you snap out of it. You should not be like that. It's a maturity in the spirit. And if you are careful and you pay attention, I may not say directly, I may say directly, but I may even show you how to replay a dream. Pause. I think I started doing this when I was maybe 10 or less I can't remember exactly. I'll be watching something that God is showing me. I'll pause it, go use the restroom, come back and continue. If I didn't get something, I would move it back and then continue. It's possible. All things are possible. If it is somebody speaking, then you can tell him, could you repeat that, please? They are not dreams are not being generated by themselves. It's a message from somebody. The problem is you engage with them, like they are not somebody communicating with you. So you have no ability to interact with the dream. Go quickly and give to God and we'll be back. God bless you.
