Growing in the Spirit: The Power of Intention in Prayer and the Spiritual Life
Every spiritual action—prayer, worship, faith, and service—must be driven by intentional purpose rooted in the heart's true desire, not mere religious practice or external compliance.
God does not examine the words of your prayer — He examines the intention behind them. Before faith can work, before prayer can move heaven, before any spiritual action carries weight, there must be a clear and settled purpose of heart driving it. This is the dimension of the spiritual life that determines whether God responds or remains silent.
Teaching Overview
- God weighs the motives and intentions of the heart above all outward spiritual activity — including prayer, worship, and acts of faith.
- Desire and intention are distinct: desire is what you want, but intention is the purposeful why behind it — and intention is what God responds to.
- Every spiritual action — prayer, fasting, worship, service, seed-sowing — must be intentional, because intention activates faith, determination, and the flow of God's power.
- Misaligned or absent intention causes believers to act against God's purpose, just as Peter cut off a man's ear by missing the intent of God.
- Deal with spiritual opposition early; a serpent not confronted becomes a dragon — small problems left unaddressed grow into overwhelming strongholds.
Key Distinctions
| Desire | Intention | Serpent | Dragon | Prayer with Words | Prayer with Intention | Faith | Acts of Faith | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A strong want for something | The purposeful why behind what you want | The devil encountered at the beginning — small and manageable | The same enemy grown powerful through neglect | Prayer equipped with scripture and good language | Prayer driven by a settled, examined purpose of heart | Belief activated by intention — with determination behind it | Religious or habitual spiritual actions performed without genuine intent |
| Who controls it | The believer's emotions and desires | The believer's will — not God's | Within the believer's authority to deal with early | A stronghold requiring far greater spiritual effort to overcome | The believer, through knowledge of the Word | The believer's heart and will — entirely within human responsibility | Flows from intention | Can be performed by anyone, regardless of heart condition |
| What activates it | Exposure, longing, circumstance | A made-up mind — a deliberate decision | Identified and confronted early in a situation | The result of failing to confront the serpent at the beginning | Knowledge of scripture and God's promises | A heart examined and aligned with genuine purpose | Intention — without intention, faith does not truly function | External compliance, religious routine, or competition |
| What happens without it | Desire without intention produces no result | God cannot respond — He examines intention before He acts | Becomes a dragon if not dealt with | Was once a serpent that could have been stopped | Prayer fires but has no effect — like a gun with no bullets | Spiritual activity becomes show — outward performance without power | Acts of faith are performed, but true faith is absent | God rejects the offering — as with Cain — because the heart is not engaged |
| Biblical example | The prodigal son's brother — present, faithful, but passive about what was his | The prodigal son — intentional about his inheritance and his right to it | Genesis 3 — the serpent in the garden | Revelation — "that old serpent, that dragon" | Praying with eloquent words but no genuine heart alignment | The blind man who screamed until Jesus stopped | Peter washing his nets — his intention was set, so Jesus met him there | Cain offering to God out of competition with his brother, not genuine devotion |
The Serpent Must Be Dealt With Early
- The devil is introduced in Genesis 3 as a serpent — manageable, within reach, possible to crush underfoot.
- By the book of Revelation, that same enemy is called "that old serpent, that dragon" — a far more formidable adversary.
- Every season of life in which the enemy is not confronted is a season in which he grows stronger and more entrenched.
"Killing a snake is easier than killing a dragon. Many of you are dealing with dragons because you fail to kill a snake."
You Deserve It Because God Decided
- David did not become king because he earned it or worked for it — he became king because God decided he would be.
- The devil's strategy is always to convince you that you are disqualified from what God has already decided to give you.
- There are things from Jesus that you cannot work for — they can only be given, and they are given by divine decision, not human merit.
"You don't deserve things because you worked, but because God decided."
"Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God and He shall lift you up. Not because you deserve it, but because He decided."
Prayer Must Be Equipped — With the Word and With Intention
- Praying without the Word of God is like firing a gun with no bullets — the action is performed, but there is no effect.
- God does not respond to pain — He responds to what He has already said He would do; He answers what He has already established to answer.
- Beyond the Word, there is something even more foundational that determines whether prayer carries power: intention.
"If you pray without the Word of God, it's like somebody who has a gun but has no bullets in them."
"This is what makes even faith work. Without this one, you can do acts of faith, but it will not be faith."
God Weighs Motives, Not Deeds
- Proverbs 16:2 establishes the principle: all the ways of man are clean in his own sight, but God weighs the motives.
- God does not look at a good deed — He looks at why the good deed was done.
- What is behind the prayer matters more to God than the eloquence or scriptural accuracy of the prayer itself.
"God does not look at you doing a good deed. He looks at the motive why you did a good deed."
Desire and Intention Are Not the Same
- Desire is an intense want — something you really want badly.
- Intention is the purposeful answer to the question: Why do I want it?
- God will not give you something you desire if you cannot answer why you want it — because intention reveals the true orientation of the heart.
"The intention of a person determines the prayer of the person."
"Desire and intention are different."
"Intention gives birth to determination."
Everything in the Spiritual Life Must Be Intentional
- You cannot pray for the sake of praying, worship for the sake of worshiping, or praise for the sake of praising — every spiritual action must be driven by a settled purpose.
- The disciples fell asleep in Gethsemane because they had no intention — they went with Jesus because it seemed right, not because they were purposefully seeking God.
- Many believers are expecting results they have not sown toward — expectation without intention is empty.
"Everything must be intentional."
"You cannot expect where you did not sow."
God Searches the Heart and Its Intentions
- Jeremiah 17:10 establishes that God searches the heart and tests the mind — and gives to each person according to their ways and the result of their deeds.
- Every spiritual action — prophesying, fasting, reading scripture, prayer — is triggered and activated by intention.
- 1 Samuel 16:7 shows that before Samuel arrived, God had already rejected Saul's successor candidates — because God had already searched their hearts and found the one whose intention was right.
"God is always, always, always looking at one thing and one thing only. The heart."
Your Actions Are a Reflection of Your Heart
- The claim "God sees my heart, so it doesn't matter what I do outwardly" is a misunderstanding — what you do outwardly is a reflection of what is happening inwardly.
- 1 Chronicles 28:9 charges Solomon to serve God with a whole heart and a willing mind — "willing" comes from "will," and will comes from intent.
- God searches all hearts and understands every intent of the thoughts; if you seek Him, He will let you find Him, but if you forsake Him, He will reject you.
"What you're doing outside is a reflection of the intention."
Intentions Exposed Through Biblical Examples
- The prodigal son received from his father because he was intentional — he knew his inheritance, claimed his right to it, and acted on it with purpose.
- His loyal brother, though faithful, had left everything in his father's hands without intention — he was present but passive.
- Cain's offering was rejected because it was not an act of genuine devotion — it was an act of competition with his brother; his lack of true intention eventually led to murder.
"God is examining 100 million percent the intention."
Peter: The Man Whose Intention Jesus Met
- Peter fished all night and caught nothing — yet when morning came, he was still washing his nets, preparing to go out again.
- Washing the nets was itself an act of intention — it declared that he was still expectant, still ready, still oriented toward catching fish.
- Jesus did not ask Peter what he wanted, because Peter's intention was already visible before Him — and Jesus met him precisely at the point of his set intention.
"The Lord Jesus met him at his intention of catching fish. That is why the Lord Jesus did not ask him, what do you want me to do for you?"
Misaligned Intention Cuts People Off from God's Message
- When Jesus told His disciples to sell their coats and buy swords, it was for a specific, limited purpose — one that expired when they entered Jerusalem.
- Peter's misaligned intention led him to use that sword in the garden, cutting off a soldier's ear — acting against the very purpose of God for that moment.
- Those who have missed the intention of God become instruments that cut off other people's ears — preventing them from receiving the direction God is giving.
"When you don't have intention or you don't understand the intent of God, you cut people's ears."
God's Will Is Already Done — Now What Is Your Intention?
- God's will was to give you Jesus, to destroy the works of the enemy through you, and to make a way for you to enter heaven — that will is already accomplished.
- Praying "let Your will be done" when His will is already done reveals a misunderstanding of where the responsibility now lies.
- Psalm 37:4 instructs believers to delight themselves in the Lord, and He will give them the desires of their heart — not His desires, but yours, because His desire (giving you Jesus, making a way) is already fulfilled.
"God's will is already done."
Key Definitions
Intention — The purposeful why behind what you desire; the settled, examined resolve of the heart that determines every spiritual action and is the one thing God searches before He responds.
Desire — Something you want very badly; distinct from intention in that desire is emotional longing, while intention is the determined reason for the longing — and without intention, desire produces nothing before God.
Motive — The reason behind an outward action; Proverbs 16:2 establishes that while all a man's ways seem right to himself, God weighs motives — meaning God looks past the deed to the why behind it.
Acts of Faith — Spiritual actions — praying, sowing, declaring — performed without genuine intention behind them; they resemble faith outwardly but do not carry the activating force of true faith because intention is absent.
The Serpent / The Dragon — Two biblical representations of the same enemy at different stages: the serpent (Genesis 3) is an opponent that can be confronted and defeated early; the dragon (Revelation) is that same enemy grown powerful through neglect and delay.
The Heart — In biblical usage, the seat of the soul — not the spirit; the place where intention, motive, and desire originate, and the one thing God continuously searches and examines in every person.
Key Takeaways
- God weighs intention above all outward spiritual activity — eloquent prayer, scriptural knowledge, and acts of faith all fall short if the heart's intention is absent or corrupt, because God looks past the performance to the why behind it.
- Desire and intention are distinct, and God responds to intention — knowing what you want means nothing to God unless you have a clear, purposeful reason for wanting it, because intention is what activates faith and releases determination.
- Every spiritual action must be intentional — prayer, worship, fasting, seed-sowing, and service performed out of habit, routine, or religious obligation carry no spiritual weight; intentionality is what transforms religious activity into genuine encounter with God.
- Confronting the enemy early prevents small problems from becoming overwhelming strongholds — the serpent that is not dealt with in the beginning grows into the dragon that requires far greater effort to overcome.
- God's will is already accomplished in Christ — the question is what your intention is in response to it — because God has already given Jesus, already made a way, and already granted you authority; what remains is whether you are intentional about walking in it.
Reflection Questions
- When you pray, fast, worship, or give — have you examined why you are doing it? Is your intention genuinely oriented toward God, or are you acting out of religious routine, social expectation, or competition with others?
- Where in your life have you been dealing with a "dragon" — a problem, a habit, or a spiritual adversary — that you should have confronted as a "serpent" at the beginning? What stopped you from dealing with it early?
- Is there something you strongly desire from God, but you have never truly examined your why for wanting it? What does your intention around that desire reveal about the true orientation of your heart?
- Are there areas where you have been passively waiting for God to act — praying "let Your will be done" — when His will is already done in Christ and the responsibility to act with intention is yours?
- Like Peter washing his nets after a fruitless night, what does your preparation and posture between seasons reveal about your true intention? Are you still oriented toward what God placed in your heart, even when results have not yet come?
Prayers and Declarations
Opening Prayer
"I pray for you in the name of Jesus, that the Lord will touch you wherever you are. I pray that the soul of Manointing shall come upon you as you listen to this prayer. I pray that your spiritual ears and your spiritual eyes and your spiritual understanding shall be unlocked this day. I pray that the mysteries of Jehovah God shall be released unto you. I pray that you may know His power, that you may know His love, that you may know His mind in your life this day. I pray in the name of the Lord Jesus. May what was impossible become possible now. I pray that my encounters with the Lord will become your encounters. I pray that every single angelic visitation that I've experienced may the Lord favor you today. May the Lord give you the grace to see the things that I have seen and beyond. I unlock you in the prophetic today. I release the Sulama Noiting upon you today. May angels ascend and descend upon you in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus. May the Lord be glorified through your life. May the world know that Jesus is alive by reason of Him manifesting Himself through you. I decree and declare a prophet of God. There will be a difference from this day when you stand before people when you pray there will be a change that people will know that the Holy Spirit is upon you and yet that no intention to do the work of God to be a shield for your family to be a defender of your family let it be so now and Jesus might delay."
