Interpreting Prophetic Dreams: How to Hear God Through the Language of the Night

Interpreting Prophetic Dreams: How to Hear God Through the Language of the Night

Teaching by Prophet Lovy L. Elias · Watch on YouTube · 14 January 2020

Dreams are not random noise — they are God speaking, and learning to interpret them is one of the most critical spiritual skills a believer can develop.

Dreams are one of the most undermined gifts God has given every person, yet Scripture reveals they are a primary channel through which God speaks. The ability to discern whether a dream is from God, from the soul, or from the enemy is not a passive spiritual instinct — it is a teachable skill that carries life-or-death consequences for those who would hear and act on God's voice. To take your dreams lightly is to take God's voice for granted.

Teaching Overview

  1. Every sense God has given you — including dreams — is a window to hear God, and this includes the spiritual capacity to dream.
  2. Not every dream is from God, but the believer must develop the skill to discern the source of every dream.
  3. Dream interpretation is a teachable spiritual skill, not merely a spontaneous gift — it can be learned, developed, and deepened.
  4. The dreamer of dreams and the prophet occupy distinct but related spiritual offices, each with different levels of access to God's voice.
  5. Missing God's voice through dreams puts others at spiritual risk — God speaks through you for the benefit of others, not only for yourself.

Every Sense Is a Window to God

  • Every sense God has given you — smell, touch, hearing, taste, sight — is designed not only to perceive the world but to perceive God.
  • The sixth sense enters the spiritual realm, and all senses together form a composite channel through which God communicates.
  • You only see the world through your gift — the gift is the lens through which God shows you both the natural and the spiritual.

"Every sense that God has given you is a window to hear God."

Dreams Are God Speaking

  • Dreams are not meant to be seen — they are meant to be heard; in the spirit, you hear with your eyes, not with your ears.
  • What the mind assembles in a dream is an interpreting mechanism — a decoding program God placed inside you to translate what He is saying.
  • To put the right thoughts and right thinking into yourself is to prepare the decoder so that when God speaks in a dream, you can accurately decode the message.

"Dreams is God speaking. So if you're ignorant of dreams, you're ignorant of God."

"I will speak unto him in a dream."

Dream Interpretation Is a Teachable Spiritual Skill

  • Joseph's brothers — with evil intent — correctly identified what his dream meant, proving that interpreting dreams is a learnable skill, not an exclusively spiritual endowment.
  • God stopped speaking to Eli, but Eli could still teach Samuel how to hear God — spiritual mechanics can be taught even when the gift no longer operates in the teacher.
  • Daniel was given knowledge, skill, and understanding in all visions and dreams — this is offered as evidence that such understanding is a spiritual skill God can grant and believers can cultivate.

"If an evil person could tell what God was saying with evil intention, could know — how much more for believers. So it's a skill. It's a spiritual skill."

Not Every Dream Is from God

  • A dream can originate from three sources: God, the soul (your own mind rehearsing what you have been meditating on), or demonic influence — discernment of the source is non-negotiable.
  • You cannot cover yourself from someone speaking to you — the solution is not to block all input but to filter what is received, making every thought bow to the will of Christ.
  • Scripture warns against false dreamers of dreams who cause God's people to err by their lies and their lightness — and God declares He is against them.

"Just because you dreamt doesn't mean God's spoke. It might be the beans you ate or the devil. Or the movie you watched."

The Dreamer of Dreams vs. the Prophet

  • A dreamer of dreams is not the same as a prophet — just because you dream does not make you a prophet; these are distinct spiritual identities that Scripture places side by side because both have the capacity to hear God.
  • A prophet can hear God at any time — while eating, while in the bedroom, while doing anything — whereas a dreamer of dreams must enter the sleep or closed-eye state to receive.
  • Jacob began his prophetic journey as a dreamer of dreams before graduating to a broader mode of hearing from God, showing this dimension as a beginning point, not an end point.

"Just because your dream doesn't make your prophet."

The Seer Dimension

  • A seer carries all the other prophetic levels within — the seer hears with the eyes and sees with the ears, operating visually and continuously in the realm of the Spirit.
  • The content of light you carry determines how far you can see in the spiritual realm — the greater the light, the greater the range of spiritual sight.
  • In the spiritual realm there is no natural light — the light that illuminates is the presence of God, and those who carry that light become luminaries in the realm.

"The content of light you carry determines how far you can see."

The Danger of Missing God's Voice Through Dreams

  • God speaks through everybody — born again or not, tongues-speaking or not — because He would be an evil God if He were not trying to bring His children out of danger.
  • God never speaks just for the person who receives the dream — He speaks for the sake of others, and missing the message means others suffer for what was not heard.
  • Dreams are the first channel God uses before visions and before the prophet — the prophet is the last resort, not the first.

"If you don't know whether a dream is from God, then you are in danger of missing God's voice. And if you miss God's voice, people will perish because you missed. And people's blood will be on your hands."

Seeing Through the Internal, Not the External

  • A spiritual person is not influenced by what is outside — they are influenced by what is inside; external things are temporary, internal things are eternal.
  • Natural sight produces false prophecy — seeing people through external appearance causes a prophet to declare what they observe rather than what God is saying.
  • You must be moved by the voice of the Lord that is in you, not by the things that are external.

"I am what I am because I look through the eyes of God and I've never looked through the eyes of man."

Key Definitions

Prophet — One who hears God at any time, in any circumstance, in any location; hearing is not conditioned on a specific posture or state of consciousness.

Dreamer of Dreams — One who can engage the dream dimension to hear God; distinct from a prophet in that access to God's voice requires entering the sleep or trance state, though this dimension is available to any believer willing to develop it.

Seer — One who carries all levels of the prophetic office — utterance, inspiration, and vision — simultaneously; a seer hears with the eyes and sees with the ears, and the range of spiritual sight is determined by the content of divine light they carry.

Prophetic Dream — A dream in which God is the speaker; distinguished from soul-produced dreams (the mind replaying what it has been meditating on) and demonic dreams (counterfeits designed to mislead); identified by whether the burden of what was seen lifts upon accurate interpretation.

Spiritual Light — The presence of God carried within a believer that illuminates the spiritual realm and determines the range of spiritual sight; the greater the light, the farther into time and the spirit world the seer can perceive.

Skill (Spiritual) — A capacity in the things of God that can be taught, developed, and sharpened — even though the activation of that skill ultimately requires God to speak; dream interpretation is explicitly categorised as this kind of skill.

Key Takeaways

  • Dreams are God speaking, and ignoring them is ignoring God's voice — because the first place God answers prayer and gives direction is in the dream, not through a prophet.
  • Dream interpretation is a spiritual skill that can be taught and developed — God gave Daniel knowledge and skill in all visions and dreams, which means this understanding is available to any believer who pursues it.
  • The source of a dream must always be discerned — a dream from the soul or from the enemy carries no divine authority, and the inability to tell the difference puts both the dreamer and those around them at risk.
  • The dreamer of dreams and the prophet are distinct offices — dreaming frequently does not make someone a prophet; these are separate spiritual identities with different scopes of access to God's voice.
  • Spiritual sight is internal, not external — prophetic accuracy depends on seeing people and situations through the eyes of God from within, not through natural observation and external impression.

Reflection Questions

  1. When you have a significant dream, what is your first response — and does that response reflect the seriousness with which Scripture treats dreams as God's voice?
  2. Have you ever acted on a dream, ignored a dream, or misidentified the source of a dream — and what were the consequences for yourself or others?
  3. What are you currently filling your mind and meditation with, and how might that be shaping the dreams your internal decoder is producing?
  4. Are you seeking God's direction primarily through the prophet, or are you developing your own capacity to hear God through dreams and visions first?
  5. Is there an area of your life where God may already have been speaking to you through dreams that you have dismissed as insignificant — and what would it mean to revisit those dreams now?

Prayers and Declarations

Opening Prayer

"I pray for the grace for sweet. I pray for the grace of increase. I pray for the grace of acceleration in Jesus mighty name."

"There is one I'm saying this to you is because there's a certain blessing that God will release to you. You have to take advantage of your father being around before God takes him."

"I saw the spirit of revival coming to you. Because your greatest desire is that revival will come to pass. When one angel shows up is to announce something, when two angels shows up is to establish something, when three angels shows up is to carry out something. So God wants to carry out revival through you."
